8-Bit of Farming by StinkyKitty

[raw]
made by StinkyKitty for Ludum Dare 46 (JAM)

Come and enjoy 8-bit of farming!

We've got an update! Here's the changelog:

  • Fixed the music to not sound weird when walking around (used the wrong node, whoops.)
  • Adjusted all of the prices (balance)
  • Added 2 plants to the main room (balance)
  • Fixed the vending machines to show the correct frame of the animation when found
  • Fixed the UI completely bugging out when gaining enough of something at once
  • Made the satisfying final unlock actually work
  • Fixed inventory count to actually update when selling an item
  • Fixed a small visual issue where farmland and crops would flicker
  • Swapped music for a slower version (would have been in the original, but there was a last minute issue :<

The original version is still available on the Itch page for reviewing purposes.

:ALERT:

While playing post-jam, I noticed that sometimes when the UI gets a few extra digits of money, the UI will bug out. To fix this, just resize the window and it should magically go back to normal.

8-Bit of Farming is a retro-style tycoon game. Keep your farm alive by growing corn and buying upgrades!

Controls:

  • Left click: Use item (Using tools)
  • Right click: Interact (planting seeds, selling held items, opening gates, ect.)
  • WASD/Arrows: Walk
  • Mouse wheel: Change equipped item

Things that aren't as they should be:

  • You can only sell items by holding a sellable item
  • You can only fertilize farmland when there's nothing growing on it

Getting started:

To progress, you collect and sell corn. Starting off, head to the farmland at the bottom of the room and right click to plant some corn! After it grows, right click to pick it up. Then you can sell it at the bin! After a little while, you'll be able to walk over to a gate and right click to unlock it. You'll find something new in each room, including a special tool at the one above the start room!

Warning: We didn't have time to properly play-test the game, so all the prices were guesses. This game is probably way too slow in it's current state 😕

I love the art in this game. The audio was in mono for me which I don't love but the music itself was very nice. Overall a good game, well done.

This game is wayyy too slow, at least on my machine, which is a shame because it has a really nice gameboy style and cute audio. I just wish plants grew faster, or anything else happened to fill that time. When I first started playing the game, I thought I had broken it because I couldn't go anywhere and the plants took so long to grow.

I really like the style of this game, would be great to see you expand on this in the future.

The audio reverb between left and right gave me a headache and it was way too slow to play, ended up having to cheat in money to feel like we could progress

Uh, how exactly do you get out of the first area. I went around, tried clicking everything and using all of the keys that you listed, tried just sitting there for a few minutes, and nothing changed ever.

Really like the style. A bit slow and monotonous for me, but I can see the potential! Took me a while to figure out what to do!

Hey there i love the 8 bit art and music is pretty nice. I used the linux port and im kinda stuck in the first zone, 2 corn grew and i sold them for 20 gold in total, not sure what to do now though been waiting a while, perhaps i got an older version since im on linux? Anyways a proper fail state would be nice so you can tell when i have failed.

The art style is charming. The music was only playing in one ear in the starting area and the first left unlockable area. The music sounded pretty nice, just the stereo issue made it less enjoyable. It honestly took me a while to figure out that I had to plant seeds with right click when I didn't have any equipment since it wasn't explained anywhere, but I felt amazing once I figured it out. The progression was a little too slow at the beginning. I wanted to play more, but just took a little too long to get the farm going.

Game was slow in the start and it wasn't very clear that I could plant seeds using right click. If the pacing was a bit better then this would be a great game.

@kokiriboots Thanks :D

@welby @fermak I was afraid it'd be too slow, we ran out of time before we could give it a proper balance test run for the prices :< Come to think of it, I wonder if I could add a post-jam money button so people can experience the whole thing 🤔

@cz46 Glad you liked it ^-^

@billehbawb You get money by selling plants in the shipping bin. Plant something on the dirt near the bottom of the room, harvest it, then sell it in the bin. After you get a bit of money, you should be able to right click at a gate to unlock it!

Kinda slow, and I wish you'd put an arrow or something over the first spots to plant seeds. It wasn't clear to me what I could interact with, and I nearly put the game down at that point.

The art style here is lovely, and the song is nice - although 4 bars in a game this centered on waiting isn't quite enough. I get it though, the jam doesn't leave much time for composition.

I think you've got something fun here - a seed, if you will. I hope it grows into something bigger!

The audio and visuals of this game are incredibly charming. I love the sprite work and I absolutely adore the farmer. The music remains peaceful and not annoying, despite its frequent looping. Once you start the game, it can be hard to figure out what you need to do, but its easy to grasp once you learn how to plant seeds. The prices, however, are incredibly sharp. I managed to but the first tool out of curiosity, but I stopped soon after that. The game is wonderful and charming though, and those fixes are not too hard, should you decide to do a post-jam. Good job!

@synystercola Thanks for the feedback, we'll have to try and speed things up.

@michael-sjogren You have to re-plant the corn after each harvest, unless I managed to break something. The game is supposed to be a calm one, you can't technically lose ^-^ Thanks for playing!

@alex-horstman Odd audio issues 🤔 I'll have to look into that. Thanks for letting me know! And apologies for not making it clear you could plant things, I've edited the page to hopefully help with that ^^; We'll have to see if we can speed things up. Thanks for playing our game! :D

@enya454 Whoops, intuitive design I have not. I've edited the post to help with that, thanks ^^; We'll get to speeding up the gameplay, thanks!

@quillwerth Sorry about that, must have been a bit frustrating being stuck in the room like that :/ I've edited the post to hopefully make that clearer for new players. Will have to try and balance progression as well :P
> 4 bars in a game this centered on waiting isn’t quite enough

That, is an excellent point. We'll 100% add more audio and music stuff assuming we develop this more. Thanks a ton for playing, and for the quality feedback. So glad you liked the game!

@drewg8 So glad you liked the game! The farmer's design was a spur-of-the-moment doodle while we were tossing around game ideas.

Here's a screenshot of the first design:

We'll have to make the planting thing more clear, for sure. Speed is definitely an issue to tackle as well ^^;

Thanks for the great feedback, really glad you enjoyed the game! :D

Fairly addicting game, although it feels like a bit of a grind. The beginning is really slow, then things pick up when in the middle, then slow down a bit a the end. I like the style of visuals and audio, although I couldn't figure out what was bobbing on the player's face. I think balancing prices a bit more could fix the pacing/grind problems. Overall a fun little game!

Super cute floppy nose and relaxing game! As many before have pointed out, it is a bit slow, but that might be part of the charm for a farming game! I can see you taking it in the opposite direction and instead of speeding this up, making the growing take a day or two, and making the payoff bigger. Glad to see you responding to the feedback and nice work! :muscle:

@armytag I see what you mean on the pacing. I did a test play just now, and you're spot on there. Will get to fixing that up 👍 As for what's on the player's face, it's a nose :D Glad you enjoyed the game, thanks for the great feedback!

@abyss Your comments on how slow might be a good thing are intriguing. We might have to add in alternative plants that grow slower, but give quite a bit more. As long as the player decides to make things grow slower, it should be less bothersome having to wait.

Realtime growth is a great idea too! I'd love to have this an AnimalCrossing style farming game. We'd need a bit of world building to make that feel worthwhile for players, but I love this idea. Definitely will be giving it more thought for any post-jam version we do.

Huge thanks for the comment, glad you liked our game 😄

Pretty chill game, the music isn't amazing but it adds to the charm. You should add the ability to plant more seeds and some people to talk to so you can immerse the player, there's tons of potential for stuff to add. Sometimes simple things are the most fun and memorable.

Edit: Wait you can plant seeds oh I'm gonna go back to this game now sorry.

Edit 2: Okay I played a lot of the game now but I don't think I have the patience to get to unlock the 10000 coins gate.

I also ran into one bug, which is when I equipped the scykle and right clicked to harvest a grown plant with a full inventory. It plants another plant in the already grown plant spot.

A good way of keeping the player going throughout the game is teasing them with different upcoming purchases/events. I explored the rooms to the left, right, and bottom of the starting area but each of them just expanded my ability by just a tiny amount. You should add more and more depth to the game as the player unlocks such areas. Like I said before, have npcs to talk to and maybe some small quests and random events and this game would be improved by a lot.

To anybody keeping up with the comments here, we've made a quick hotfix-style update! Changelog at the top, but it mostly fixes more major issues, balances progression, and fixes some small visual/audio errors. The original is of course still available for download.

@catalystl Hey, thanks for trying our game! :D
Those changes sound awesome, definitely will have to try for something like that in future updates. Thanks for taking the time to play through that far too, seeing as how the balance in the original version is basically non-existent :P

Thanks for playing, hope you had fun! ^-^

I feel like the theme for this game jam encouraged a fairly frantic rate of play from the player, so I'm glad to have this change of pace. It was pretty simple and straightforward, but I found it quite relaxing!

@grentacular After our last game of fast paced arcade frantic-ness, it was really nice making one where the player could just slow down and enjoy farming. Glad you enjoyed it :D

Nice game, but it really could use some balancing.
To reach the first 500 hundred to by a hoe takes ages with only 4 spots.
Also, there's a bug that doesn't reset the amount of stuff in your inventory after you drop off the food there.

The graphical style is really coherent and very pleasing.

With just a bit of tweaking the gameplay, the game would be really awesome :)

@kaisean-games Balancing was our downfall for sure. Didn't prioritize playtesting the game, and ended up with a WAY unbalanced product. And thanks for the bug report, too!

Really pleased you liked the graphics, I'm quite happy with how they turned out :D

Many thanks for playing!

I really love this game's art style. My only problem with it is that it's really slow (other people have mentioned this, sorry haha) but other than that great work!

I love the way it looks, that's actually what made me play it instead of other games in the list. I agree with the others that it's a tad slow, but hey, farming ain't easy ;)

I played the 1.01 version instead of the original because the original felt broken until I finally figured out how to plant seeds. Ironically, I think this means the visuals are a little non-intuitive at the start.

I liked the art and limited palette choice. I think it gives it a lot of retro charm. The music was quite nice, and the challenge was interesting.

The controls are a little difficult to handle (left click seems to apply to the grid next to you where right click applies only to the one below you) And some of the mechanics could also use a pass-through (having to wait to remove the corn just to apply the two fertilizer types to a piece of ground was annoying) However, the slow-paced nature of the game makes it less a concern.

In 1.01, I think the upgrades were well-balanced against the 'annoyance' factor, in that I had just earned enough for the next thing right as I was feeling a need for it. At the same time, like most idle games, earning the next upgrade made a lot of the previous effort and challenge a complete moot point, which kind of left the final upgrade feeling like a downer than a success.

If I was to recommend a single change, I would suggest focusing on a satisfying 'end' to the game. Otherwise, as is, it feels polished enough to be a real mini-game that stands on its own.
