Keep What Alive by Valeth2124

KEEP WHAT ALIVE...? YOUR CHOICE.
Hello guys,
We are Team Bacon x Pogo, a joint team of five, this is our first game jam and it's a cool new experience for all of us.
Here's our game: "Keep what alive". As the name suggests, it's a choice-driven game where making certain choices unlocks new and 5 completely unexpected endings.

Stories and Features
- You find yourself in a slowly deranging town amidst a deadly pandemic.
- The townfolks seem fine at first, but god knows what's in their minds, or worse yet, their breaths?
- Watch out for yourself as you'll be engulfed in all kinds of questions. What will I do? Who will I save? Is that a Cybertruck?
- Dynamic, fun minigames
- Various endings, depending on your choice and ability to complete some minigames

Controls
- WASD to move
- Space for using items
- F for interactions
- LMB to hide the dialogue bubble
Don't like story-telling games? We also got some minigames intertwined into the main story to best suit your taste.
Please rate us and leave a comment if you like our game or give us some advices on how to further improve it.

also this world is hella depressing. not only did my wife and children starve, but they were murdered the very next day :(
good fun stuff, looking forward to seeing a finished game if it happens
@cogh Thank you for playing our game, truth is, we had some minor bugs that only got discovered recently. They are fixed now, do you want to try one more time? About the depressing world, that was kind of our tone since the beginning, but there're some fun bits here and there too!
@incinious Thank you for playing. We have fixed all the bugs and inconvenience you listed. Do you want to try our game again?
@merlinnsound His pattern is quite easy to guess, but there are many other endings for you to explore :D
@ricefarmerlenin Woah I thought we fixed the dialogue bug :o we will double check to make sure players get the story
@aj-jones Thank you very much! Honestly thought there would be a lot more bugs tho... But your game is quite epic! Good to hear your thoughts on mine.
@edz123 The cybertruck was a humorous feature, but in the end we decided to keep it anyway ^_^
@bitpokit The coughing was intentionally made subtle so player will catch the virus unexpectedly :DD
@christopher-wong Indeed you are right, our guidance wasn't clear enough, but still you made it to the neighbor's house :)) There is a way to kill him tho...
@vawer The mask won't prevent you from being infected, it only lowers your vulnerability zone, and we will take note of that bug during day 3 also :o . Good to hear your constructive feedback, hope you had fun exploring our games ^_^
@morandigame The colleague won't show up, initially we would've elaborated another ending if you chose to stay with her, but time wasn't sufficient you only make the choice and we skip you to day 4 :))
Thanks for the game.
I died in the darkness of my neighbour's house, don't know from what. Maybe a NPC was in the dark spot?
I got a message meeting someone downtime but I couldn't find her, maybe I went to the wrong place.
- The main character feels very slowly.
- When starting the Webgl version not in full screen, half of the discussion texts are cut off.
Thanks for the game and keep it up
Just one thing, when i was shooted, i could move the player when he is dead.
Thanks!
it was fun to explore the game world and i really enjoyed the playing) unfortunately i didn't find how to use mask) maybe i should pay it more a bit later!
Also i think i found a new ending) At my first try, right neighbor and i killed each other at the same moment and the game just left me to watch on two bodies:D So i had to reload game)
Some points though:
- It's not very clear you're meant to interact with the text screens to continue (I thought it had broken until I started clicking trying to work out what happened)
- If you click mid-text it finishes the sentence but then plays the rest of the clicking audio clip
- the text is quite small and hard to read, especially with the font..
- I think there could be more direction given to players in the actual game. The small pieces of text at the start is great, but once that's gone it's kinda unclear what you're meant to be doing because no other indicators are given to you.
- When I walked into someone's house they were just continually doing 360 spins until I walked up to them and got shot immediately
Overall though, a super fun and challenging little game. The different endings is also a sweet little bonus. Nice job!

I like the idea, and I like struggling games...like cartlife
but my experience was kind of broke.
the first play through I got killed when I tried to steal my neighbor... restart
second play through there was this creep wanting to attack my family. I didn't want to leave home but I couldn't stay. it told me it is too early to sleep.
so I go out, ask the neighbor for food. and cooked it. still too early to sleep. nothing to do. I got into the car and back immediately because I don't think I have any money why risk getting infected.
I know its a short Jam game but I have some suggestions...
make a little bit clearer on how you get money.
make the run more interesting on it self (I felt like you have to die and learn then you can value your choices more because you know what to expect)
but this is good entry with really nice art.
After a while I would have like to move a bit faster on the way to loot my neighbors. As (is it a bug that) I can go steal my neighbor food and money multiple times the same night ?
Also I try it once, but if you kill every one on the way to market to not being infected and being a monster there seams that there no consequences ?
Anyway, I think some things could have been more clear, like what actions take time. Sometimes for me going inside then back out would make it night, but I'm not sure why, and that cost me my family. But great work on the story, graphics, sound and minigames, which btw were a great addition. Overall, nice work!
Other than that, game as a concepts seems really promising, it's definitely longer than usual entries (+well put story, sounds and graphics), so really big props for that from me. (* ̄▽ ̄)b
I found it pretty hilarious that the child of my character has a name but the wife is simply "the wife". I can feel the love in this marriage already .
The story is pleasant and branches out nicely. Good job on that! Although I don't really appreciate your choice of theme (it's not like we need yet more pandemic reminders, I have quite enough outside my window). But that is just my personal opinion. And I found things that gave me pause - like when I come back home to a murdered wife and child, yet there is zero reaction from my character. He just keeps going like nothing happened, even leaves them there on the floor. I guess he can just get another "the wife", but son he did name  I know it's all on jam time and you can't expect polish but still - this felt bad. There is overall lack of consequences to many of your actions. You can shoot everyone and nothing (well, you will have much easier time going to the store, but that's it). And in a story-based game, that feels bad as well.
Text itself also needs some work, I ran into several writing mistakes.
It is a solid jam game overall.
A few things I noticed while playing.... Variety needed in the music as well as some further mixing with the synths, there is a hissing sound in the home music which is a little overbearing with headphones, and maybe balance the parts a little better.
I felt that giving clearer instructions as to the objectives would have been nice, knowing what we could interact with etc.
Invisible walls are very frustrating. Why not create a physical obstacle to help guide players?
I noticed some grammatical errors in the text... "you has been infected" for example...
I don't think the pandemic theme is a particularly good choice, considering that many people who might be participating in this jam could be affected by the current climate, as some have mentioned above. this will discourage some people, including myself, from playing it, those of us who don't want to be reminded about it.
It's good that you've come up with multiple endings and a story of sorts, but the character doesn't really react to anything.
Good effort getting this together in a short amount of time.
The music is good but a bit repetitive, but what i really found interesting is the quantity of content developed in one weekend. The graphics are really nice. Congrats on your game!
I enjoyed that there was a bit of variety around the game play (sneaking through the neighbors house and running around town without being infected or just shooting everyone to make sure).
I think the game was a little slow and as you were not 100% sure what you should be doing this made the issue worse. It meant that you found yourself wondering around the game a lot and this became frustrating and detracted from the enjoyment of the game.
The audio and sound FX were nice and worked well, maybe a little more variety on the backing track but other than that the audio was good.
I can see how this game could have been a little adventurous to fit within the 72 hour time frame and it is really impressive what you managed to come up with! Nicely done.
I then procdeeded to cook a nice meal for my family which was a cool minigame. Then I went out to make sure everything is safe. Obviously I broke into my neighbours house who immediately shot me.
I might go back and play it again, but I do think you could tweak the difficulty a bit.
Otherwise this is a really solid game! Well done!
However, the movement was soooo slow, moving from one place to another felt like a chore rather than having fun playing a game. This is very unfortunate. I would have played this a couple more times after I initially died, but for me this is unfortunately a deal braker :(
Let me know If you release a post-LD version with faster movement I would very much like to play that!
The Art is really beautiful :)
Although the sound is sometimes crackleling...
I thought the Streets where a bit to large. So either make it smaller or make it so that the Player moves alot faster.
Other than that, a nice Game.
After I bought a Gun it felt a bit like Postal :D
Loved the pixel art style, palette was pleasing, animations well done. Really good graphics. The music was nice as well - just the sound made during cooking time was a bit too loud and sharp. Gameplay intuitive and comfortable.
Then there's the story. The choice you went for in the current situation seems quite horrendous to be honest, and my teeth were gritting all the way. Going too far on many many occasions. I see couple comments saying they liked the humour, I have no idea where there even was humour. Story made no sense at times, contradicting itself. Starts off saying my family is starving, I go grocery shopping, then it says my family *might* be hungry. My family was dead, no reactions at all from me, yet they still thanked me for the meal I cooked?! And then story goes on talking about them as if they were alive. Everyone has a name except my wife?! Ran into a bothersome issue several times were the text would skip on its own, and I couldn't even read. Like at the end, I have no idea what happened, but everyone was dead apparently. And these are just a few of the things I thought were a big no-no. I really disliked playing.
Am impressed at the amount of content you managed to put together, though. There were couple great gameplay ideas, like dodging people downtown, and interacting with neighbours.
Coughing is always to the left, not where character is facing, Pharmacy could be one store to the right. I got infected while inside the pharmarcy after buying medice. While trespassing, neighbours could stop for a little time before turning. Typing sound for speeches could have some variants. Missed some direction Plates in street and store recognition.
That's all! Really liked how you guys did everything and i got hooked up right from the start!
I'm still playing. I stopped just to post the image for later comment (about the cut on the screen).

Still trying... @.@
Observação: Não sei o motivo, mas o sprite responsável pelo topo do móvel do abajour some quando estou fora do quarto ou algo assim (como é possível ver na imagem).
Note: I don't know why, but the sprite responsible for the top of the lamp's furniture disappears when I'm out of the room or something (as you can see in the image).

I'm still cooking for dead memories. T.T

1 - Mechanics, Learning and Flow:
I found it quite interesting to have to survive during a pandemic crisis. Take care of my family (shopping, food, protection, emotional support, etc.). Including the lines (although cut in my browser) very interesting and revealing the fears that people feel.
I wish there was a way to do work to get money (even from the Internet); or in another way of getting money (in addition to committing crimes).
I thought it was bad that there were only people without a mask on the street (hahahahahah, I felt like the rest were ignorant of this possibility). I also didn't think it was cool that I got sick for no apparent reason (I avoided contact as much as I could, even when ringing the neighbors' bell.
I tried to save my "humanity" by not committing crimes the second time I played (the first time I died experiencing the scenario invading a home). Well, I couldn't save my humanity. Hahahahah. Nor did my family (who died very early, although this did not interfere with the amount of food I spent).
Learning to play was easy, I believe the game is very intuitive in that sense. There are some doors in the city that did not allow any kind of interaction (it is your team's choice not to give feedback even though there are doors).
When someone "called" me to the city center to talk, I went, but I didn't find it. Was there anyone waiting there?
The game flow seemed balanced, even though I lost a few times, I recognize that I lost because I didn't sacrifice some points of view.
2 - Graphics, Audio and Narrative:
The game has a lot of quality content for the short time of the event, so I start by congratulating you.
The graphic art was very beautiful. The songs may sound repetitive at times (after playing a lot), but I found them very good and appropriate. The music even matched both the day and the night, in my view.
The narrative was very interesting, I just thought it failed in some branches. To the example of something written saying that the wife and son liked the food and such (since they were dead). Another somewhat confusing thing was that they complained about some things that apparently I couldn't solve (maybe it was the tip for me to buy a gun).
As in my country it is kind of strange, I was also surprised to sell weapons in the same place where I bought food. Hahahahahah.
If the stores were separated, it might be more interesting and diverse to have a city to explore.
3 - Culture:
The game talks a lot about the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic in the world. Despite being illustrated by another crisis, perhaps not the same.
Taking care of a home, making food, taking care of the family, making difficult (but real / possible) choices. The psychological/narrative atmosphere was very interesting (even considering some displaced lines, already mentioned before, nothing relevant, something that can be corrected if the group continues the project after the game jam).
4 - Monetization:
I think the game would sell in a polished state and with some more narrative ramifications.
Who knows in chapters on the smartphone (with some free and others paid); who knows how to complete a game on Steam (with more days to survive and some check-points).
Congratulations.
Overall really good. I got to day 4 but then died from trespassing in an empty room. Wasn't too sure how that happened, and I felt a bit cheated after making it that far.
But you have a lot of content in here and I was impressed with how much there was, so good job.
Apart from the bugs, I really like the game, the story was really nice, the gameplay comfortable, and overall the game seems really polished and finished (how did you do that?! :D ), I hope you make more games like this one! Great job c:
I especially liked the "personal space circle" that indicated when you're about to get infected if you were close, made for a cool avoiding aspect! The story itself was fun, although I always ended up getting killed by the neighbour, haha. I feel like if I bought the gun I should be able to shoot him :P And then I can feed the body to my family or something xD (but I guess there wasn't enough time? :P)
The mechanics were interesting, also the options at the shop :)
I think this would be really cool if you'd continued to work on this and make it so ther's like 2 time slots you dobefore it's evening and you also have a job where you earn money and you can choose to work 2 shifts or none at all, and risk getting fired or overworked or something :D
A cool idea and an interesting gameplay, mood was also great, good job! :)
To help with atmosphere I reckon it'd be good to have the odd cough and at first I wasn't completely sure how to use the medicine. I felt like I bought it and got infected instantly, so that could do with some balancing. Game was good though!
I don't know if you could walk faster or run in the game.
Anyway, good job
The only issue I had with this game is that when I got the letter from that girl I went downtown and she wasn't there, or maybe it's just me.
But anyway, I'm really impressed by the amount of content you guys managed to add in such a short time, not even considering the art, amazing job :D

This is very very ambitious. The art and music and sounds are all very very good.
The narration works well. It is a bit sad to be put in a classic genre stereotype of "man defending woman and children", but other than that it is pretty well written and disturbing.
Thanks for the game and great job again!
