Hyperloop by Game_Coder28

[raw]
made by Game_Coder28 for Ludum Dare 47 (COMPO)

1.jpg

Hyperloop is an infinite runner strategy game. Weave through the obstacles while the loop gradually speeds up. Try to survive for as long as you can and post your highest time in the comments!

Controls

A or Left Arrow - Move left

D or Right Arrow - Move right

Tap the movement keys to switch lane, holding down will not let the player glide.

Difficulty

In the main menu press the [1] or [2] button on the keyboard to swap the difficulty.

[1] = Easy: Bigger gaps between the obstacles

[2] = Harder: Smaller gaps between the obstacles

Known Bugs

A massive black square engulfs the game. This is a Unity rendering error and I have no fix for it at the moment, just try to die and get back to the main menu, this will reload the scene and will temporarily fix the problem. This bug is rare and has only happened to me twice.

Can you include the full source, minus the Library folder, in your source download? I was curious to look at the bug but can't open the project as-is in Unity.

The music and visuals is really cool. The gameplay idea is simple and pretty fun. I wish there was a bit more to the gameplay, but it's okay for a jam game. Overall a well made little jam game.

Is it really rythm based ? Didn't feel it quite well.

However, reming me audiosurf in the game play, and oh lord did i loose time on audiosurf back in the day. Graphism are great, could litterally spend time on this if there was more track, because the audio is so good.
You did great !

I think you did an amazing job. The music is good but i don't really feel it connects with the game field to call it rythembased but that is just me. The loop had a verry trippy effect i can imagine this game would work wel in VR.

I absolutely loved this game! I love rhythm games that give you this sense of speed! This is so impressive for a compo, what a job well done. Did you make the music entirely yourself? Because that is one sick beat. I love that you added a hard mode, I need that challenge!!

@jag I made all the music in the game, I actually made one song with different sections then split them up to make the different loops for slalom, etc. , I'm glad you enjoyed it! @sven-lowry that's a great time! was it on easy or hard mode? :)

Man, I absolutely loved the camera dynamics. It felt extremely cool to play and maneuver through the track.
If I had to I'd say the biggest problem I had was that for a rythm game, I didn't feel the beats lining up with the blocking sections you have to cross. Still, probably the coolest feeling game I played this LD.

Nice entry! I like that you took the time to make an game Icon! It feels good, to play, a good sense of speed! Also crashing the obstacles have a really good effect. Is there more than "Slaloms"? I would probably used the dead effect more during the game in a different variant. But I like the polishness of the experience! Nice COMPO enty.I miss some sound effects when switching the lane though :)

06. Oct 2020 · 16:54 UTC
Really polished entry. I used to love these kinds of games when I was a kid, the aesthetic reminds me of the old Tomy viewfinder game. I didn't really see it as a rhythm game - I can't be sure if the obstacles were passing you in time with the music, but it didn't seem like moving on the beat had any correlation with the collision. Nevertheless, loads of fun to play and really slick.

![Hyperloop.png](///raw/6c3/4/z/391af.png)

This was on difficult - I think I managed about 140s on easy, but the faster speed was way more fun.
🎤 Game_Coder28
06. Oct 2020 · 17:04 UTC
@niterich I was actually sort of going off of the thumper vibe! Like the small camera shake to indicate speed and the idea of just having some empty space and an infinite track ahead, Im also pretty sure I accidentally used the same percussion pack as them! I love thumper and it was one of the biggest inspirations for my game!

I'm getting old. Managed just short of 40 seconds on the hard difficulty, but man I had fun. This felt very well polished, I loved the graphics and sound effects, especially when you die, it's really well executed!

Loved the game, wasn't what I expected and I loved the shake up with the slalom break, would have loved to see more. One thing that would have made the game even better was if the music was synced up to as you're passing through those X's

I saw some gif you posted during the event, it made me think of audiosurf. And there is definitely an audiosurf vibe in this game. Making 2 levels of difficulty and variations during the gameply is a great addition.

Polished, well scoped game. Some possible things you could iterate on: a clear hit-box for the player (The hitbox was very forgiving but having a visual indicator of bounds would be nice), and maybe finding a way for the obstacles to sync with the beat of the music (the screen shake when you passed a gate was so satisfying that i wanted the bass drum to hit at the same time)

Hello fellow HYPERLOOP game :)
This is awesome! A very fleshed out and polished experience. The art style may be reduced but it's executed to perfection. Visually pleasing. The soundtrack is pumping and fits the context of the game well. Controls are responsive and dashing through the loop is very satisfying, especially at 144fps.

Easy mode got boring rather fast, so I switched to hard mode. That's how it's meant to be played!
I little more variation in obstacles would've been awesome. Maybe jumping over or ducking under stuff could mix the game play up a little. Congrats nonetheless. Very good entry!

@duke thanks so much! Easy mode definately gets boring, I actually originally didn't have easy mode, however I felt the game needed an entry point for people who hadn't played it before, as I find when you crunch time on a game you get used to it very easily and you forget what the experience for a user who has never played before is like. Im glad you enjoyed it.

Awesome game. Honestly, this idea was perfect for a game jam - simple game that doesn't need explanation to play, fits the theme well and with scope that allows a single person to polish it within 48 hours. Little things like the death sound/vfx, the way the text blends with the level and the fact that game remembers your difficuly selection upon restart shows the author cared about the details of making games even in the restricted time we had. 5/5.

That game was fun but I have no idea how these scores are possible, my best try in hard was at around 40 seconds and I was proud of myself before coming to the comment section :p As a detail, I would say that movements should be more responsive (less transition from one lane to another) at it was a bit frustrating from time to time but this is not really a big deal as overall the game is really good with nice graphics and audio (not really my favourite genre but it fits the game quite well) and fun gameplay

An idea to improve it even further would be implementing some kind of leaderboard.
There are even some easy tools to do an online leaderboard with Unity like [this one](https://assetstore.unity.com/packages/tools/network/dreamlo-com-free-instant-leaderboards-and-promocode-system-3862) (I used it once and thought it was pretty neat :) )

This was quite enjoyable! I've seen a good number of the concepts like this, the theme connection is slightly tenuous, made only by the curve of the track, but the work involved to make that happen is alone impressive. The visual effects and sound effects are all gorgeous, the filters and lighting really elevating what would at first seem like fairly simple visuals. I'd almost be tempted to see what this game was like in VR.

Gameplay-wise I think there's not too much to say. It's solid, works nice, the controls are tight. I think the game should have ramped up in difficulty as time went by (or if it did then I didn't notice) and even in hard mode I never felt like I was super challenged.

On the whole, really solid excellent little entry. Reminded me of a stripped down Thumper.

Wow it's clean! It's beautiful, simple and efficient! It's very rare to come across a jam game that is so polished!
You're probably a big fan of Thumper because I find there the sensations and the atmosphere! It's catchy, the twisted road gives the feeling of being carried away in an infernal whirlwind.
However I don't feel like the patterns are on the rhythm (I'm not sure, maybe they are, maybe not, you don't mention it in the description so I guess it's not the intention) when maybe it could have added even more tension. But I guess you would have had to increase the speed of the music to keep up with the rhythm and maybe it wouldn't have been elegant... I don't know (maybe you tested it and it wasn't conclusive?).
Thank you for this short and intense experience! :D

Hey great game! I had to reach 100s to realize I was stuck in a loop, but kept playing anyway. I really like the graphics and the camera is insane. The way it move and shakes when passing between Xs, was it Cinemachine? Also I used a combination of A and left arrow to slalom faster to the left hehehe. The mechanics are quite easy to understand and like mentioned above, the controls are very responsive. I got to 550s or so before I got a black box that filled my screen, but I'm guessing you know about that. Overall very impressive entry and would definitely play again!

Simple but *really* engaging game! Reminds me of a game (that I sadly don't remember the name of) that I used to play a lot when I was younger (nostalgia bonus gained!)

Graphics, SFX and (especially) music are executed amazingly well. Everything about this game screams polished. I also don't think the graphics need to be more complex as that might be distracting.

Sadly, it didn't run too well on my machine. But that's my fault, really, for only having integrated Intel graphics.

I missed the relation to the theme a bit, maybe there would've been more opportunities to add it to the gameplay.

But I'm starting to nitpick. You did a great job with this! Amazing entry!

Wow! This is super polished. I can easily see this becoming a really good hypercasual mobile experience. The first person view is super exhilarating. I managed to keep going for like 88 seconds and then died. The difficulty sort of doesn't change throughout the whole experience so that is something you could look into. Maybe have power-ups which let you survive a hit, that would help the pacing by giving players a small window to relax.

But overall, Really great game, super fun!

Wow that was really cool, I'm going to be playing this more on my commute! The concept is not supper innovative but it's so well done! The music is really giving it that hyped mood and the fiery effect when you hit something is super cool. When I started playing I thought it was way too hard but after a while I got the hang of it which was super satisfying. I like that there's a delay in your movement so the most important thing is that you look ahead. The way the perspective was done on the loop works really well for this.
