  • and ESC for menu.

Features, that didn't make it?

  • More complex grass mechnics.

  • Difficulties.

  • More levels.

  • Fleshed out graphics and sound.

Thanks for playing, and share you highscores! :)

Changelog

  • Uploaded a newer version with balanced parameters, because the old version was too easy.

  • Uploaded another version, because as it turns out, on some machines the game was harder than it should have been  Sorry!

Warning

  • The Android version wasn't intended, so it could be a worse experience than other platforms. Keep this in mind when rating :)

  • As it turns out the Web version could be unwinnable, most likely do to the tab losing focus. If you experience these issues, download the game please, thank you! :)

The game is very relaxing and not challenging the player.

A few things I would like to see:

- WASD is not needed. Just center the camera on the island after the fall of the earth.

- See the difference between fallen earth and a water tank

> The game is very relaxing and not challenging the player.

Do you mean this in a good or a bad way?

- I planned on bigger maps, but ran out of time. But maybe I will remove panning, and focus on adding depth to small maps.

- Totally agree!

Thanks for the great feedback!

@tudvari In first level - good. But in next levels i want some challenge, like insects that destroy crops, and the need to build protection from them. There is absolutely nowhere to spend money.

Enjoyable! Sometimes felt like I waited more than interacting, and when I did it was slightly frantic. However, it is very polished! A little more interaction would likely make it more interesting.

This had really interesting idea!
I see that you updated game to make it harder. You succeeded. I was really struggling with this and my best score was 2450 so I wasn't able to try other than first level :D I might have to try this again later.

Somehow I always only got more sand and no more grass - and maximum of 1400 points. Strange. But nice art and audio, enjoyed it!
🎤 Tudvari
22. Apr 2020 · 05:04 UTC
@Zondarg On which level? The same decisions always result in the same outcome, so if you can't get more than 1400 points, then your strategy is not optimal. You should try a different approach

@kregames @airola @somethingwithed @pophead Thanks for the feedback, would you mind sharing your highscores? I'm curious

@kaappis Maybe you haven't thought of some other, better approach  If you do try it again, let me know!

@jellycopter Yeah, I know, I wanted more depth with trees, critters, etc, which would result in more interaction, but haven't got enough time. But for some reason there is a different kind of joy in watching the grass grow  Thanks for the feedback!

@moomka Now that it's harder, want to give another try?

I could not get past the first level, and I made my best score the first time when I did not understand what I was doing X)

I still don't get the scoring system, sometimes when I have only 10 blocks remaining on my island I get loads of point, and other when I have almost all of my island remaining and lots of grass block, I don't get any points :/

The game is very relaxing and the mechanics are very interesting, but easier levels could be nice (like introductory levels, because I'm still not sure if what I did was right ;) )
🎤 Tudvari
22. Apr 2020 · 08:24 UTC
@dodormeur Well the first level is the introductory, level with those floating texts explaining the mechanics, also the scoring system is told there as well, even if it's a bit vague: *"More grass, more points."*

And the exact scoring system is stated at the end screen: (now added to the description)

![level1points.png](///raw/a2d/8/z/32353.png)

I think what you didn't get is that **fully grown grass worth triple the points**. Next time I will be a bit clearer about it

Maybe with this information you can finish the first level. Want to give it a try again?

Feel free to ask more questions, it would be very helpful feedback :)

22. Apr 2020 · 10:42 UTC
Even knowing that fully grown grass is worth triple the points, I've still not been able to get out of the first stage having tried a half dozen different strategies. For a tutorial level I feel that the difficulty is too steep, requiring me to get the solution fully before I can progress. A smoother entry way with a "you're almost guaranteed to win unless you pretty much do nothing" would allow players to have a sense of victory and accomplishment before ramping things up more slowly, allowing them to try out different tactics. Hitting the metaphorical brick wall can be off putting.

Maybe provide some more information in the description of ways of getting further to help out us more lowly-players progress further if we need it.

@kjscott @purpledartfrog I don't really know what you are doing wrong, maybe the game is bugged?

My friends easily finished the first level after 2 or 3 tries. A few tries is enough for each level to see what blocks will dry out soon, when should you save your money for a few seconds, where should you put water, where should you put seeds, etc.

Could you elaborate on what are you doing? A gameplay video would be much appreciated  But I know that it's too much to ask, so maybe just a list of steps what you did when and where?

Much appreciated if you could help me!

@tudvari, I only receive coins after each rain which was about 20 to 30 seconds apart? This gave me realistically about 3 cycles of purchasing (initial money, rain 1 and rain 2).

So I have the first round to dig a few holes to ensure area for flowers to spread and reach full maturity, and maybe plant another plant. Then I have to sit and wait until after it rains again when I get a bit more money. Very very very rarely i might see one or two coins appear in-between rain cycles.
PurpledArtFrog
22. Apr 2020 · 13:47 UTC
@tudvari actually had three go's the first time around.... so not exactly why  but just plain dumb :v:
🎤 Tudvari
22. Apr 2020 · 13:48 UTC
@kjscott Yes, you only get coins during rain. You spent all your initial money instantly? On what?
kjscott
22. Apr 2020 · 14:39 UTC
@tudvari, mostly on holes to keep the land wet enough as quickly enough the land would dry out. if I didn't make some initial holes then there wasn't enough land left to spread out to. I had originally tried spending more money on seeds then holes but would only generate 4 coins, never enough to make any more holes so all the land would crash and burn. I've tried combination of 0 holes, 1 hole, 2 holes, 3 holes, 4 holes and so on to see if I could get any combination to have enough time to generate full grass and preserve the land long enough before I lose it all. I have yet to figure out the combination which makes it work.
🎤 Tudvari
22. Apr 2020 · 15:36 UTC
@kjscott Hmm, interesting. Your approach seems good: balancing out using holes to extend your territory, and also planting something initially to get the most points out of the limited time.

Lose it all? On the first level without extra holes supporting your initial (middle) territory, you lose that as well?

**ANNOUNCEMENT**

- I'm deeply sorry for all of the frustration I've caused for some of you, who **couldn't finish Level 1**.

- But **now you can**, because it's as easy, as I intended it to be! I would really appreciate it, if you could **give it a try again**, so you could try the **other levels** as well.

- And **congratulations** to all of you, who managed to finish Level 1, because there is a chance that the level you completed, had a higher difficulty, between Level 2's and Level 3's. Thanks for not giving up on a hard first level! Congrats!

**EXPLANATION:**

- As it turns out, it was **harder on some machines** than on others.

- It was **still winnable**, but a **better strategy was needed**, which was found by my playtesters (friends), thus I didn't know that my intended solution doesn't work on all machines.

I'm sorry once again, and thanks again for all the useful feedback you've given me.

Have a good day, cheers!

@Tudvari, working a lot better it seems! I implemented my first "bad" strategy and got a new highscore for me of 1940, then I implemented what I thought was a better strategy and got 3555. Whatever your changed made a huge difference.

Very nice game! The music is lovely, and the game itself is beautifully innovative. I think some of the things could have happened quicker, like sand more just floated down then fell. But otherwise really great game. I urge you to make a post-jam!
🎤 Tudvari
23. Apr 2020 · 15:01 UTC
@digitallimestone thanks for the kind words! Sand falling was slowed down only so players could read the "falling down" last tutorial text. Didn't have time to implement something more elegant, like the text is travelling slower than the sand, so I made the sand slower

Thanks! I plan on making something with it, if the ratings and the feedbacks are good. I already plan making it a bit deeper, so on later levels player has more things to do and think about.

I love this game! I wish there was some kind of endless mode. Btw on the third level after a few retries, the rain animation kept going after it was supposed to stop, and then the game crashed.

Nice little resources-puzzle game. Menus and little details are really nice (like the globe-like mouse cursor). The mechanics are easy to understand, intuitive. I found in-game graphics a little bit simple.
I like resources games and this, although simple in the concept, has a good balance. The weather menu is a great, very useful information. May be some more details in the graphics would be and improvement. Overall, very nice.

@j-c-one-bit-studio Thanks, I've spent some time to make it flow well... Being not rushed is one thing that can't be told about the development itself

@robotsandmuffins Hmm, globe like? Well, glad you've liked it, but it's a hand in gloves
Yes, you're right. The in-game art is a bit noisy, and for example drying for grass and hole tiles isn't really well visualised.

Boiling Planet's mechanics are a bit simple, yet good understandable and enjoyable. The rate of decay of dry dirt adds some pressure, without frustrating me - so nice.
I think there are more comparable garden games, that are about tending and some puzzling , out there, and this one fit well in this genre (I would prefer to have "genre+" than "innovation" as a criteria)
Of course it fits the Theme nearly by default. The graphics are okay, but this time, I think, the sounds have a better quality.
I enjoyed it, however actually I am looking forward to Aeldun...

That was a fun game. I liked how the mechanics combined, and how strategies of where to dig and where to plant emerged. Took me a while to figure out how to keep the most tiles from drying out and beat level 1, but it was smooth sailing for the other two. Finally beat your score

Would have been nice to have an indicator of which tile was being dug, as I clicked the wrong tile a couple times.

I agree with kjscott, that there's 3 frantic bursts of spending money as quick as possible (start, rain 1, rain2) so that what you plant has the most time to grow; and then nothing to do in between.

I'd love to see a version of this on a longer timer, and managing a larger geographic area. Maybe with rain in random locations, so you have to adapt your strategy, and you're constantly making decisions.

I really liked the background music as well, very relaxing. Wish it didn't get so quiet when starting a game.

Congrats, you are the third one to beat me

Noted you feedback, and definitely will check out a larger, more random, sandboxy, endless gamemode idea, others mentioned a similar one. But maybe an other game mode is for an "expansion pack", because the 2 months is short enough time for a fleshed out puzzle mode already

Hi. Found the game interesting and very intuitive. Looks good, sounds good. I found myself just waiting during it, I wonder if it would make more sense for it to be a turn based game rather than a real time one. Congrats on making it, have a good day!
🎤 Tudvari
04. May 2020 · 11:28 UTC
@xmatos Thanks! :)

Hmm, turn based? Sounds like a good idea because it removes the "quick action" parts of the game, which could be unnecessary in a game like this. Maybe the puzzle mode could be turn based, and the endless mode could be real time.

Will think about it, thank you very much! :)

05. May 2020 · 06:12 UTC
I liked the concept and the music and graphics fit it really well. It was quite difficult however, to difficult I think. The grass was very expensive and I didn't finish the first level even after some tries. Maybe it should start a bit easier. I did enjoy myself but in the end it was a bit frustrating because I didn't know how to get a good strategy because the lnd dries out really fast. If you make the first level a bit easier the player gets some time to get to know the game and understand what happens. Also for me it was relaxing but for it to be fun it should have a bit more going for it, different plants, ... but that's difficult off course during a jam. Overall good entry but could work a bit on the difficulty ramp.

For all of you who reached **under ~1000 points** on the first level:

Could you send my your specs and what build you used? And if the web one, what browser did you use?

Most likely the grass growing and the tile drying is much slower for your due to a bug.
