The Blaze by nithman

[raw]
made by nithman for Ludum Dare 46 (JAM)

Controls: Arrow Keys to move, Space to shoot. Aim with your arrow keys as well, hold space and hold the arrow key in the direction that you want to shoot. The Blaze is a survival game where you have to keep a fire "alive". Enemies spawn in waves to destroy your fire. Try to survive as long as you can. Hope you enjoy playing my game!

It might be because I haven't been doing a good job of keeping stuff on my computer updated but shooting didn't work for me (moving did.)

Eckkert I forgot to mention this but you have to aim with your arrow keys as well, holds space and hold the arrow key in the direction that you want to shoot. Thank you for leaving a comment about this though. :)

Hey good job for the game, i felt the controls can be improved why not use mouse button instead of space to shoot but overall it was good.

Nice, well designed. Actually the fist time I played I was moving around with WASD but couldn't shoot. Then I read in the comments that I had to move with arrows to shoot. There shouldn't be limitations like that, the game seemed bugged. Beside that, the game is well done :)

Aiming was difficult, since you had to move in order to shoot. Otherwise pretty good!

@taran-unraveler Yeah sorry about the issue with shooting, I know some people like to use WASD instead and I will get that fixed as soon as possible. Thanks for leaving a comment about this!

It was fun, but I would have enjoyed it more if the enemies didn't spawn synced up every time to add a little more suspense!

@bklolo Thanks for the suggestion! I like the idea, also I was planning on adding more enemy types and a boss enemy but sadly I didn't have the time. Thanks for checking my game out though Im glad you liked it :)

@ted Im glad that you like it! I relized halfway in the Jam that I cant see what side the enemies are coming from so I added a minimap.

Cool game! Really liked the mini map to keep track to where we should move. Shooting was kinda confusing at first but I got used to it later. Well Done!

Also, I thought it would be cool to hear the highest wave you guys reached. Please feel free to leave a comment on this.

This was really fun but I noticed that you cant shoot sideways unless you are moving which makes you collide with the enemies.

@sanjana Thanks! Did you hold the spacebar? You need to hold the spacebar and use the arrow keys to aim.

Bug Fixes! @taran-unraveler I fixed the problem with WASD controls! Also, this is a bug I found myself but one of the monsters(the big red demon one) wasn't dealing damage when it hit the fire(the collider wasn't working). That bug is fixed now too. Also I added a few new screenshots of the game. Thanks to everyone who helped spot out these bugs!

Very nice game! Simple but effective! A few more sound and some different enemies/weapons would have been awesome (I know this was a jam my game was super simple xD)
Keep on making awesome games!
PS: Loved the bug where you could shoot 3 bullets into the air if you pressed left, top and right at the same time xD

@sir-syko Thanks a lot! I didn't know that was a bug! Dont worry I won't remove it, it will be a little hack for anyone else who reads your comment

Lovely game - lots of fun to play. A few minor bugs (or 'undocumented features') but overall a great load of fun to play

The music was awesome.. I just felt like it didn't really fit the overal look of the game. Graphic were simplistic and nice :)

The bullets were stopped by the fire too and perhaps you might want to change that if you'll keep working on the game :)

@arcus Thank You I'm working on fixing any bugs there may be(but some I would rather not fixes such as the hack from @sir-syko  )

@svalinn85 Thanks a lot! Yeah the music seemed a little out of place but it was all I could find in a short notice(I was planning on making it just sound effects). Also sorry about the issue with the bullets being stopped by the fire, the fire collider is used to sense the enemies but it also senses the bullets too because the bullets have to be on the same sorting layer. I could have used raycasts(should have done that) but I would have to change the prefab shooting, I will look into it though  I'm glad you like the graphics(I made them myself)

I like the game idea, I think you could improve it further and maybe adapt it to mobile ? The wind sound effect is nice and the fire stopping bullets makes sense from a balancing point of view, so that the player has to move to kill the enemies coming from the sides. Nice job !

Cool little game with great music.

I think the level is too big, though. You need to go for a long time to reach the enemies, good there is a minimap.

@mathieu-semin I'm actually working on making a mobile version! I'm glad that you liked it.

@motley Thank you! You don't really need to move toward the enemies you could just shoot in that direction and the bullet will travel the distance for you(of course you can't do this for air enemies though). I was also thinking about adding more maps in the future. Thanks for checking out my game!

Pretty cool game. The buildup in waves is great, it starts easy to learn how it works.

The music also fits the game quite well.

A few small things I'd suggest is having shooting work in the last direction looked (so you don't have to hold the direction) and maybe make the map less wide, since it takes quite long for enemies to come close.

Overall a really nice game.

I liked the music a lot, but I think it didn’t really fit with the art style even though it did match the suspense mood.
