Carpe Diem by Jojo The Clown

[raw]
made by Jojo The Clown for Ludum Dare 46 (COMPO)

With limited sunlight available, the last potted plant must do all it can to seize the day. Grabbing stopwatches, the plant is able to buy itself more time. How long can it last before it runs into an obstacle, or before it gets too dark?

This is a short, endless runner type game for my first game jam. The goal is to survive for as long as possible.

(Note: HTML5 is functional, but as far as I can tell, is much more laggy than the executable. If you wish to play the game as intended, please do download the executable.)

This is an amusing idea - and the music is weird, but somehow fits the absurdity of the concept really nicely. I liked the little touches like the background changing as the sunlight fades or the second bit of music. The controls seemed fine, but I found it really really hard to judge where I needed to put my plant if I wanted to grab a stopwatch between two obstacles; the perspective just made it seem like the obstacles were too far to judge only a moment before I needed to be precisely positioned in reference to them. Also, as far as I could tell, there was no way to reset the game except restarting the browser - this definitely made it harder to play.

Nice idea! I really like the surrealist take of the endless plan runner. I agree with the other comments that the perspective and lack of restart actually make this quite a difficult game to make much progress on.

As mentioned, a restart button is essential. I'm also picky against games without title screens. Furthermore, using the default unity background is a but off-putting. I see this is your first Ludum Dare, and I hope you continue to make more games in the future; I know my feedback is a bit harsh, but these are just some things to consider in your next game jam. Congrats on finishing something, that's still an achievement in its self, and if you keep making games it'll be pretty neat looking back at this game to see how much you've grown.

Good work on your first game jam! The music gives the game a unique vibe, and I like the idea of an endless runner game. Something to consider are to slow down the game; I found it difficult to survive. Another suggestion is to restart the game when you die. This can be done by using script to reload the scene. I hope you keep on making games! Great job!

Well, the music is... interesting :P When it comes to plants seizing the day, I would most likely expect them to chase (or slide) towards the sun, but I wouldn't have thought of a decision to collect stopwatches to help me travel through time, I guess I still got plenty to learn from a Time Lord. You really should have added the basic game loop along with fixing the text font quality though, even if it were post-jam.

Controls were a bit sliding. I'd definitely recommend a proper end state for your next game. Good luck!

There is no real game over. A restart button would be welcome.

Controls could use some work. Good effort with the music, but thank god I don't have to listen to it for an hour.

Hope you reach 20 ratings

The downloadable version doesn't work - it's missing the data folder, which you need to package alongside the .exe for a Unity game! Web version worked just fine for me, though

Like games like this, but controls felt floaty, I hit colliders even when it look clear, was very hard to test since I had to reload the page every time. A auto restart or restart button is a must for games like this.
