Yeah I think our thinking in that was making the main character and enemies pop out mar, but I can see what you mean how them being different could be distracting that's good feedback.
Yeah the implementation of waves actually changing was one of the last things added so it wasn't tested as much as I liked. I actually never even beat the game until after submission haha. I was worried it might not be beatable, mostly b/c I kept fixing things so I never made it to the end lol
version of this game
What about the higher islands though? Is there a way to get the resources from the ones floating above?
It took a bit too log for the tree to start growing but once it did I stuck with it until the end. It was sometimes hard to see the cursor depending on what you're hovering over, and finally I didn't realise you could use towers until I read these comments. Though that may have added ti the challenge :)
(Making the ressources around the map repop and the flower a little more tanky could be great, and please make the cursor more visible, I lost because I couldn't shoot precisely x)
If you happened to miss me playing the game, you can go to this spreadsheet to find what timestamp I played your game

So is that baby Yoda? it is right?
Soo... let's just start that tower defense are not really my thing (but I enjoyed a few), but platformers are, so it's cool to see a platformer, and I like the resource management part. So .. let's start.
I played a run that lasted 11 waves. I scored poorly also because I didn't really get how to use the commands for the first 60 seconds.
The movements of Baby yoda are pretty cool, I don't understand what's the use of TRIPLE jump, but anyway.
The space is too huge, while every single enemy just crawl and shooting with the mouse is a complication you could avoid since it's hard (and pretty useless, I say) to aim any other direction than straight ahead (if you really want 45degrees up), it was frustrating.
The game is pretty NOT rewarding since you need to wait 5 waves of collectable resources in order to see some growth of what should be the real protagonist here: the Oak (extremely cute btw). I wanted to leave the game in the first 3 waves .. this means you should have lured me in and reward in the FIRST succedeed wave.
the turrets are pretty weak, and they seem to shoot randomly not helping you at all. This is frustrating, mixed up with the fact that if the enemy touches you, you can't shoot anymore.
The huge space unused unfortunately make the platformer part wasted :(
It would have been cool if Yoda could jump on the Oak branches and the Oak could have helped in defending himself being a symbolism of the nature that endure on the attack of men!
Yoda and the force will always win, though. Thanks for the entry and good luck!
The triple jump is used to reach the higher up platforms to gather the resources up there. so every wave those resources fill up. you also get resources from killing enemies.
You can see it in action in this video

Yeah the stages of the tree based on growth which 100 growth wins, and each stage of 25 the tree grows, but the first stage should of been sooner maybe like 15 or 20 growth. And in the early waves there are less enemies so you don't get resources as quickly as the later waves.
You can actually jump on the leaves once the tree grows bigger

But the graphics and sounds are really nice and it's a cool implementation of Tower Defense and Platform genres. It's very fun to play and very enjoyable overall!
yeah the waves could of used a bit more work, that was pretty much one of the last things to get tweaked. originally they just spewed enemies out the same rate all the time and had no difference in waves or when the tree grows.
And I realized b/c of how we are limiting the number of enemies we spawn in the earlier waves, you get less resources so it takes longer to grow your tree. but in the later waves when the tree is bigger we have more enemies and more resources so we can grow the tree bigger faster.
I had fun. Great job!

Very dynamic, very clean, the tree is really cool :)
The resources you collect are on the top left and during the calm phase it tells you what each resource does. The one to buy plants is the fertilizer/poo
FYI: Your web version appears to cut off the sides of the game, not sure if you can fix that or not but I figure you'd like to know.
I think if we had done a proper stun effect with an animation where the player got knocked down on the ground and couldn't move or if they had stars around your head or something to indicate it better to the player. I only managed to implement some flashing and made the player slightly jump to indicate you were stunned.
another idea we had was that you would lose resources when hit, but since we had 3 resources, I wasn't sure how we'd choose what resources you lost, possibly you lose a few of each or something of that effect.
I know the main menu specifically was done last minute so it unfortunately had a different aspect than the main game which does cut the sides off. but I didn't realize it was in the main game.
Thank you for the feedback.
But besided that I enjoyed your game a lot! There are quite a few games with protecting/building trees themes (so not a high score in that regard), but this one might be my favorite of these games. Maybe I wouldn't start the waves with a timer, as it makes collecting resources and building trees (and reading the descriptions for first time players) more stressfull and I don't see how that supports the game, but still, this game is so far in my Top 5.
EDIT: Oh, I forgot, there seems to be something funky going on when you restart the game. The cursor doesn't seem to react anymore.
Also was curious about the theme rating, would you say you vote based on adherence to the theme, and uniqueness of how the theme is applied. I actually hadn't thought about the uniqueness of theme when voting but that's an interesting metric to apply, b/c I was only thinking about adherence and execution of the theme but I have noticed there are several ideas which seem to be in many games so that I might try to use that in my voting as well, thanks for giving your reasoning
Great job limiting the number of art assets you needed so you could focus on quality (though there are still quite a few assets, well done!)
The polish of your game is also very good, one minor suggestion would be to add some more screen shake. The different enemies were also very good, however sometimes it appeared as though the healthbar wasn't there but they still had one hit left, this was probably only a visual bug and it didn't take away from my experience overall!
Also, maybe earlier on some more verticality could be added in, as the jump didn't feel too important which was a shame as it felt very well polished and fun to use!
Overall, I had a very fun time playing this game, and its an amazing jam entry!
I felt that the game was lacking some form of upgrade to the main character's attack - there's a lot possible there like fire rate, bullet size, and so on, that would be super interesting to see and keep me playing!
Great job overall!
We actually had this idea that we had to cut due to the time constraints of the jam. We wanted to have option where you could grow fruit on the tree that would give you random perks/upgrades.
like we might of not of started out with a triple jump from the beginning and that would be a fruit you could grow, or things like you said faster fire-rate, more damage, possible cheaper cost of planting the plants and such.
maybe even modifiers like explosive enemies where when you destroy an enemy it has a chance to explode and damage nearby enemies. Or lower gravity so you could be more floaty and glide across the map with ease.
