Time is of the Essence by primed-pixel

made by primed-pixel for Ludum Dare 46 (JAM)

My first Ludum Dare! A fast paced "mini-game" collection with the main objective being to keep the timer from hitting zero, ultimately keeping it "alive". The mini-games consist of: - Platformer - Simon Says - Racing Game - Space Shooter - Breakout - 1-Player Pong - Space Invaders - Snake - Frogger

My thoughts on this Ludum Dare? It was pretty nice and calm until the last ~4 hours. That was extremely stressful, but overall I'm fairly content with what I've made in 3 days... or technically 1 Day 1 Hour 47 Minutes. The mini-games functionally I'm happy with, but graphically (as some I had to do the art myself) not so much. Well... all bar frogger and snake. I wanted to get the snake to move smoothly, but after many failed attempts, I gave up... it's a jam game after all. Frogger I didn't have time to look for sprites that I could use, and would they fit in the game even if I found some... probably not. Overall, however, I like the aesthetic of the game. Special thanks to Kenney (https://www.kenney.nl) for almost all of the graphics. The audio (all done by myself) I'm extremely happy with; the main song turned out really great and the sound effects fit well with the nature of the game.

This was all done solo, though submitted on the jam due to having extra time

Gamebreaking Bug Fixes:

  • v1.0.0.1 Added jumps in two platformer levels to make them possible
  • v1.0.0.2 Fixed an oversight with the previous fix

A nice way to string a collection of minigames together, but the difficulty varies greatly from game to game.
Having the controls on screen for each game would be nice.
The graphics are functional but there's no unique overall theme.

Cool concept, great game - The theme connection was fun, and kept me interested throughout the progress of the game. Felt like WarioWare. Some of the games seemed a little slow-paced, though, considering the fast-pace-oriented mechanic of time management, but was still quite fun.

Wow that's really ambitious to work on a minigame collection for a jam, especially alone. But I think you n,ailed it, there are all fun to play, congratz !

Nice package of well excecuted games. The audio was nice, cool music, and each game was fun! I wanted to play the racing one more, I only got it once! Because the games were simple i was able to pick them up fast and enjoy them.
9 games in one! Impressive! Well done 😀

Cool collection of minigames, the quick restart is great and helps to foster that "just one more time" feeling. A tutorial or "easy mode" the first time a player see a new game type would go a long way to making this more approachable though, as the lose conditions aren't always very obvious. Otherwise awesome work!

Cool concept stringing multiple games together. The difficulty was all over, and some of the mini games were especially punishing, where if you messed up just once it would repeatedly punish you. Fun enough to play for a few minutes, with a very loose tie to the theme.

Love the WarioWare feel of this. Really impressive y'all were able to make so many different games while also maintaining a cohesive aesthetic. :) I do wish the transition between games was a bit less sudden, but otherwise, I love how the music grows and evolves the longer you last. Really cool stuff!

Very good concept and a lot of fun. I agree with someone above about the difficulty ranging game to game. Great entry.

I heard you like games, so I put a game in your game, so you can game while you game

Quite a challenge, though! Pace is extremely high on all of them and they change around very fast.

Incredible how you managed to create so many games in just a weekend.
Feedback for some of the games:

**Platformer**: this probably you already know, but the jump needs more polishing and the movement of the enemies seems a little bit too fast and unpredictable.

**Simon Says**: it seems a little bit odd that the other games works with the arrow keys, but this one doesn't (which took me while to realize, despite the big buttons on the screen).

**Racing Game**: if the camera could follow ahead of the facing direction of the car, it would be a lot better.

**1-Player Pong**: I really loved the detail of the clock matching the look of the game.

BTW, my highscore was 118 seconds.

Hello all who have played so far! The difficulty is indeed very difficult on some, that was something I didn't really have time to balance myself. Thanks for all the kind words and constructive criticism!

Pretty fun way to do a collection of minigames! I think that the difficulty was a little too swingy. If you ever fell off your game you lost pretty much immediately. Great job reusing certain assets. I thought it was really smart since time was limited. If you take this project into the future, I'd consider adding a few more unique minigames. Pong & Breakout felt too similar for my tastes, but the rest were pretty interesting. I ran into the issue where I had the same two or three minigames back to back, and I only saw a few minigames once. Excellent work, you should be very proud!

Amazing that you made so many games in so little time. They mostly work very smoothly, but like others here I have to agree that it's way too difficult. Remember that you've practiced these mini games for 72 hours, and we new players only get 5 minutes or so.

The music can get a bit repetitive and the controls for some of the mini games are not super clear. But the graphics are well done and the game is a blast to play!

Nice concept! Surprisingly good execution given the time constraints! It feels a lot like wario ware and because of that i was expecting the games to be a little on the shorter side. Like Simon says is one pattern to complete and then snake you need to pickup way too many apples to complete. Art was also pretty good. all around solid game good job bro!
