Chess Mess by Pavel Ivanov

[raw]
made by Pavel Ivanov for Ludum Dare 46 (COMPO)

A chess based puzzle game with the goal of KEEPING ALIVE the King!

If you aren't familiar with basic chess movement rules, I advise you search it up, the game doesn't teach you that.

The controls are pretty self explanatory, read the dialog if to understand it if you don't want to figure it out yourself. It's not complicated tho

Used: Unity3D, Blender2.8, Krita, LMMS, Audacity

FOR THOSE WHO SAY THEY CAN'T RUN IT ON LINUX, I HAVE TESTED IT AND IT WORKS. DOWNLOAD THE LINUX ZIP, EXTRACT IT AND RUN THE Linux.x86_64. I AM SORRY FOR ANY CONFUSION. IF YOU ARE STILL NOT ABLE TO RUN THE GAME, PLEASE DO NOT RATE MY GAME AS THAT IS UNFAIR.

You've listed linux/mac executable but there is only a .exe file in the download. Screenshot looks neat but I don't have a way to play it.

I think this is the best graphics I've seen so far! Absolutely love the graphics/models/effects/shaders, and a great take on the theme as well :)

@tattomoosa thank you for letting me know. I didn't have a way to test it as I only have a windows machine. I will see what I can do at this point as the compo is over now.

Neat game! I love how polish the graphic is. On top of that the sound makes a great chilling experience. One request would be to speed up the animation. I spent too much time waiting for the puzzle after i figure out how to solve it.

It's not bad, there are a few minor issues including a problem with skipping to the next message adding extra characters to the next message and not being able to restart the level by pressing R. Otherwise, a nice idea.

@supergamersgames yeah, there is no restart. My bad. You can always just die as an option, lol

@sneakycocoon thanks for the feedback. I agree it feels a little slow at the beginning stages, however, when you get to the later levels with cannons and stuff, the step by step structure is useful as well as the wait. It's a compo game so will have some loose ends...

Graphics look great... from the screenshots
I haven't been able to try it under linux, the zip seems to only contain library files

I really like the art style and music. Thought it runs at a really low frame rate on my poor laptop and there was a bug which might be related to it. The king wasn't in the middle of the cell so there might be some problems with hit-tests. It is stuck by the pillar.

Btw I didn't understand the mechanic well. The knights fell sometimes while sometimes they not. I have been playing for a hour but I am not able to figure out the reason yet, which is quiet sad.

Beat it! It's a really cool concept. A puzzle game that keeps the chess mechanics. Visuals a nice and the puzzles are well thought out. Not too easy, or difficult. The rook mechanic and the "hidden" paths with the knights are a nice mechanic

I usually try to suggest an improvement in the comments, though no big ones come to mind... the repeating tutorial messages every respawn is a bit tedious. That's the best I got.

@moebiusmeow I am sorry to hear it lagged. I have only tested it on my computer and its a pretty beastly one. I have play tested it on my system tho and never encountered the bug. The knights should jump over gaps, the rooks are for blocking cannon fire.

Very creative idea with the chess pieces. As many others have mentioned, the music and the graphics look great. My only complaint is that the animations sometimes feel too slow. Absolutly great job.

This game was really nicely put together: Well engineered, fitting graphics, a good script with fun easter eggs for spamming text, tasteful use of effects and innovative mechanics. Overall, I think the pace of the moves detracted from the fun, as I spent a fair bit of time knowing what I wanted to do next, but having to wait 3-4 seconds while I tried to move a piece from point A to B. I also really would have liked a visual guide showing the path the King was going to take, as the first attempt at a level was basically lost to finding out which path to suicide the king was taking.

Overall, other than respecting the player's time a little better (which wouldn't take much more dev at all) I think this is a pretty solid entry. Commendable work. Thanks for the game!

Wonderful! Better than most jam games, so very impressive. The humor was great, the puzzles were tight and well-designed. My only complaint is not enough levels. Thanks for sharing!

I'm sorry I couldn't play your game! I was having unplayable framerate issues. I would suggest having it in a windowed view. It looked really cool!! I wish I could have played.

Great idea for a puzzle game! Chess moves and a King piece that really likes to jump into the void. A really solid puzzle game entry. You could expand this into a mobile game easily and add new puzzles and mechanics over time.

this is a very well made game.
I wish it was faster though. the theme is calmer than I'd like. IDK even though I like calm games. but I got bored with this one.

it was really annoying when you restart a level you had to hear the guy speaking again :D

all in all; great job for a compo entry. looked very polished (only needed sound effects)
