Milk Trail by Mr_Field

[raw]
made by Mr_Field for Ludum Dare 46 (JAM)

Milk Trail is a difficult survival? cow defense game that can be played either alone or in local co-op with up to 2 other people! :)

Co-op is recommended, if you're unable to play on the same machine, it is possible to play using Steam Remote Play, which there are many easy tutorials around for if you wish to go that route. At your own risk of course. ;)

Thanks for playing!

Quick reminder to get more players: Use a thumbnail for your game. Otherwise your game is presented with this grey box. Some great Games are not played because of a missing thumbnail ... You can still change it by editing your submission page :)

Love the art, audio fits, would love to see some info on what everything available in the shop does... and I only stumbled upon 'kick the engine to go' by accident.

Is the engine and gas mandatory? Might want to consider pre-installing it and subtracting funds if that's the case...

Amazing art style, and lots of fun things to play with. This is a pretty complete package, which is a great accomplishment for 72 hours.

Some more instructions would be helpful! It was hard to figure out what to do. The difficulty is also really intense when playing solo - multiplayer during LD is tricky in general as most people won't be able to try it out.

I feel like I can't really approach this game, because I spend more time buying stuff to set up a run than I get actually playing the game. Additionally, the step of "place engine, give it gas, then kick it" is cute, but it was not at all intuitive.

Be careful not to waste your player's time or just dump them into a guessing game from the jump - unless that guessing game is the whole point, which I don't think is true for you here. I'd rather have a menu system that lets me click on supplies and then press "Go" to start than the "immersive" menu you've built here that takes longer to navigate through than I get with the actual gameplay.

Art and audio are really great and go hand in hand. The game controls very well, very reminiscent of the old school games you were trying to emulate aesthetically. The raiders attacking and moments dealing with baddies made me think back to arcade classic shoot em ups. The single cow made it very difficult to play on my own, but I could see how through coop the game would have you split roles more often. I like the Oregon Trail style pit stops. Very polished game with a solid foundation that just needs a balance pass (and maybe just a tiny bit more instruction at the start). Great entry!

@mp-raxxius @quillwerth you both have very good points, in hind sight i think it would've been a great help to have a quick restart option to automatically start with the supplies you chose in the last run.

in regards to the unintuitive beginning, my original idea was to have the shopkeep give you tips within a little speech bubble in the empty space between the wagon and the shop, but this was scrapped due to time.

thanks for playing and giving valuable feedback. ;)

@rjhelms
thanks very much! i was grinding hard on the game right up until the end so i didn't get to play through it before uploading, so the balance is pretty nuts unfortunately :S

i think you're right about multiplayer, i may have shot myself in the foot a little

i really appreciate the feedback ;)

@mr-field The struggle is real when it comes to balance! It's so hard to have perspective when you've been playing your own game non-stop and know it inside and out.

Was stuck in the beginning - didnt know what to do after the first player starved and I starved while jumping around with what i believe a can of food atop of my head this game breaking bug accoured. 10/10 would starve again xD Nice graphics and dont bother the shop keeper 💣

@kptnholz

ah dang, thanks for sharing the error report.

once you've bought and built the engine on your wagon, you have to fuel it and then kick it to start it up.
the shopkeep was supposed to inform you of how to do it but that didn't get implemented due to time and the whole thing ended up being extremely unintuitive. :s

thanks for playing anyhow!

Very polished game! Incredible work done in 72 hours! It was a challenge to find out how to make the train go and I still haven't figured out what some items are for.

There is so much good stuff going here I don't know where to begin. I usually skip downloadable games and only play HTML5 ones, but I made exception just for this game. Graphics are very retro and nostalgic. Audio effects fit the retro aesthetics perfectly. Game play is fun and everything is juiced to the max when it comes to the game feel.

Best entry for the jam yet! Good luck guys, you're going top!

i really wanted to like this game a lot but there was so much to do at the beginning. it took me about 20 min to figure it out and by that time i no longer felt like playing. i think maybe making that easier would be better.

The game loop was fun once I was able to figure out how to get the cart rolling. Graphics were nice I liked the characters added a good bit of variety to the graphics. Great Work!

I loved the pixel art. The audio was nice as well. The game is a little too hard when playing solo though XD. Just make the enemies a little slower. I couldn't play in co-op because, well...no one to play with. I suppose the game would have been easier in co-op. I also think you should tell players what exactly they should do. I didn't even know that you needed to buy the engine and place it until I experimented and did it. Giving it a kick to start was a nice touch XD. I really did like your game and feel it should recieve more praise, but just fix the balancing issues, then it will be an amazing game. Great job :)
