Blood Runs by Sol Roo

[raw]
made by Sol Roo for Ludum Dare 46 (JAM)

You wake up in the middle of the night (every night), starving. You take your keys, and you go for a drive, to satisfy your munchies. Vampire munchies are the worst. The bad news is that the people you feed on, they become ghouls (yuk!) and are just volent empty sacks of blood... just punch those.

CONTROLS: - WASD / Arrow keys to control - Space key / Z: main action (enter/exit car, eat people) - Left/Right control / X: secondary action (punch)

CREDITS: - Camilo ABELAYRAS: Art - Thibault LAINE: Map, Cars (behaviour and AI) - Sol ROO: Characters (behaviour and AI) - Marco BENZI TOBAR: Audio (music, FX, integration)

Good looking game with a unique idea. Found the inverted W and S keys a little hard to get used to.

Awesome looking pixel art !
Also the music is really nice.
But... the controls... Damn, the vertical axis inverted is a bug, right ? Also the car is extremely fast and the vampire really slow. Plus it's not clear when the blood bar replenishes and when it doesn't.
I couldn't finish day 2 but I'll be willing to give it a try again if you could fix the axis swap :)
Good job !

Hey, glad you liked it!
Controls: The W/S key invert is clearly a bug (sorry!), because we programmed it for AZERTY/ Arrow keys and added the QWERTY support at midnight... I pushed a quickfix.
The speeds are intentional (to force you to drive around).

I mean c'mon- this is amazing! Vampy GTA?! So- I only made it through two feedings- I didn't eat enough and died in my sleep. Superb art, fantastic music and wonderful SFX- Will be back to see if I can get in a tussle with the cops. This is a perfect idea. Can't wait to see more. Please add more drift. Thanks for the game!!

Really neat game! I had a lot of fun playing this. Personally, I think that it's just missing a bit of polish on the controls, but otherwise, it's a very promising game! Aesthetics are great, it strikes a balance for mood and humor, and the remixed Canon in D as the soundtrack was really clever! Good job!

Very good game, I loved the visuals and the core idea. When you play some days it becomes a bit boring, because you dont have a real objective. But it is veery cool, good job!

Wow - really enjoyed this entry.
I think the old-fashion 'tank' controls might have suited it better - but good work!

First Impression was great! When I saw your game i was looking for retro GTA vibes with Hotline miami and Vampires??? How cool is that? :) Game was nice and beautiful visual arts, I was missing more in-depth features hence I was getting so pulled in to the theme and the game world but I know I'm getting ahead of myself it can't expect a full game during a Ludumdare event haha. Wonderful job guys I really hope you make something out of this there's so much potential in this fun concept and theme. Really strong entry with a fitting theme guys, well done. :)

Thanks everyone!

@delunado @miki-keyo It is
true that the gameplay is a bit shallow, we spent too much time building the engine and the map... But we will work some more on it, for sure!

@kristian-kurktchiev @lintfordpickle controls are not great. Probably testing tank controls in the next few days (thanks!).

Impressive game ! You should expand on the gameplay, make it less easy to run from ghouls and maybe add some twists to make it less repetitive !

Very good game, amazing graphics and sound, basically an open world Hotline Miami. But would suggest a mini-map to help get through the town, got lost a lot and ended up dying.

Very good GTA like, pixel art is great end retro i like it ! The control of the car is a bit strange and camera in my opinion is too close when you start to drive. With this base of game, you can add more mission, story etc...Good job ! (can you add a windows build ?)

I'm a huge fan of the classic GTAs and a huge fan of vampires, so this game is a dream.
The art style it's really impressive as well. PLEASE MAKE IT INTO A FULL GAME.

I really liked your style and overall aesthetic! Gameplay-wise it reminded me a bit of GTA and Hotline Miami. Great entry, one of the best I played so far! I wish people would react more to all of the chaos around them though

It's a unique take on the theme. I really like the graphics. Like the others have said, I think tank controls would be better for the car.

Ok I replayed it and... this is awesome ! One of the best game I've played up to now in this jam.
What I said before about the art and the music still stands but now I could appreciate the gameplay much more. The ghoul mechanic plus the car work well together to force you to move to another place.

If I had stuff to nitpick concerning places of improvement I would say :
-I found that you've got a beautiful graveyard and you're not using it, I feel like it's kind of a wasted opportunity
-does the rising sun actually do something ? What prevents us from staying in the city endlessly ? It seems I never died or anything from a rising sun

Indiscriminate slaughter few. This was pretty entertaining, and I really enjoyed the central concept. The car controls were a bit crazy and took some getting used to. It would be nice to have some sort of difficulty increase as you progress or something to make you feel that you're actually moving forward in the game and not just repeating your midnight snacking ad infinitum, but overall it looked great! Nicely done.

That was reeeeally fun to play. With a bit more of controls imporvement and add few more features this could be a full game. I love the art style and the music. Good job!

Very finely made GTA engine proto! There are possibilities in this even I personally are not fond to the vampires thing :) Nice detailed graphics and audio. Good job for a one weekend!

Oh god that's so amazing!!! Unearth the nostalgic gOlden days playing GTA for Playstation one!!!
It's an awesome entry! would really love to fight against cops or vampire hunters!

There are ome "flicking" on the tiles and the camera seriously made me get nauseated in the early minutes of the game.... you should try some sort of smoothing with look ahead!

The graphics and audio were very well done! Congrats on a very polished entry :) I just wish there were more objectives or maybe if the difficulty scaled as days went on.

Wow this is really fun. Amazing how you reproduced the GTA feeling with vampires.... Only criticism is that it's maybe a bit too easy and repetitive. But Other than that very good job!
