ShortRails by Yorsh

[raw]
made by Yorsh for Ludum Dare 47 (COMPO)

In ShortRails your goal is to keep the train on rail and make it loop forever.

Controls

  • Change the rails of a tile with left/right click.
  • Remove rails with middle mouse button or space.
  • Escape to give up.

Guide

  • You loose if the train reaches the end of the rails (obviously).
  • You have to come by the train station regularly. If the clock runs out before you do you loose.
  • Avoid tiles occupied by bandits, or it's gameover.
  • You get a bonus score multiplier by passing by a tile with a lady.
  • Rails flashing in yellow will change randomly next time the train steps on them.ShortRails_Gameplay.gif

I can see some mini metro influence with the randomized spawn. Great graphics and the aesthetics are coherent! I'd play a full featured game of this for sure! Thanks!!

The sound was a little loud, but it looks like a really polished game to me and it was pretty fun to play. I really like how I can interact with the world in the menu screen.

Love the art! This would be neat to see fleshed out a bit more.

@gamefriend I wanted to balance the volume at the end and forgot/had no time anyway.
I've found that menues being interactable are great for jam games. It would probably be kind of annoying in a game you launch everyday but it's perfect for a game you try once or twice. Usually it's also very easy to make by copy-pasting parts of the game.
Thanks for the feebacks!

I really like the tilt-shift style, all the animations and models feel very charming!

I was unclear on some of the mechanics? I wasn't sure whether I was supposed to be directing the train *through* the ladies (which seems like it would be very bad for them!) or alongside them (then what counts as "alongside" in that case?). Similarly I wasn't sure why I sometimes couldn't change a piece of track after placing it down. Do you need to have an extra piece of track in stock to change an existing piece? It also took me a while to recognize the bandits as such (I assumed they were passengers, though in retrospect I can get a slight Snidely Whiplash feel from them).

Still, it's a fun little casual game and I could imagine myself wasting away a lot of time on it, especially if the placement controls were a little more streamlined (maybe something with gestures?). Thanks for making it!

Looks brathtaking and fun to play. I found it a bit confusing that I was supposed to run over the ladies and leave the bandits alive :cowboy:

@tjm Hmmm in my head it was not running over the lady but picking them up, but now that you make me think about it I should have placed them on the side or something. Also yeah that's me being stupid, you should be able to change a track even when you don't have any left, that makes perfect sense.

Thanks for the precise feedbacks :)

@joonamo Ahah you are supposed to pick up the ladies. I promise they move to the side last second.

Fun sounds and graphic and playing with trains. I like this as an idea for the theme. I also feel like i was running over the ladies.

Looks great and plays great too. I like how much animation and movement there is in this.

looks and feels amazing. Took some time to realize I dont have unlimited rails, but then it was a lot of fun! Great work!

Cool game, beautiful graphics! Took me a minute to understand how it worked but after that it was super fun!

I had a little bit of trouble with changing the tracks. Maybe if I memorized the order in which they changed?

Anyway, it's pretty, quite unique amongst other entries, and it's fun to play. Great work!

I played with it a little bit more and found a bug.

Once I came to the edge of the screen, the train stopped, but the score kept increasing.

@kuro Uuh to be honest it could have badly crashed it wouldn't have suprised me. I somehow totally forgot to handle the situation when you try to go off the map. That's embarrassing. Well I'll have to make a post jam version at some point to fix this. Thanks for the feedbacks!

Wow, nice game!

The visuals are very very good and polished for a compo game.
The gameplay is very intuitive on most part but a bit less on others (I didn't understood right away that the men in shirts were bad guys, even if said like that it sounds obvious haha).

Once I read that you can delete with space I got too good and got stuck on end of the world too 🌈

Thanks for the game, now I know how to build railways.

That's a cute little game. The gameplay is nice, the graphics is great. The only thing to complain is that you should never use the middle mouse button in HTML5 games, browser intercepts it for its own needs.
