Backstory

One day Billy Biophile was boasting that he loved wildlife so much that he'd be willing to take a bullet for a living creature. Someone called him out on his bravado and now his actions must live up to his words or he will be exposed as a hypocrite and face absolute humiliation.

Fortunately for him, deer hunting season has just begun. He has gone out to the forest and found a deer that he is determined to keep alive at any cost, even if it means a total disregard for his own safety.

Description

Defendeer was designed to imitate the style of LCD handheld games (such as the Game & Watch brand) from the 1980s.

How to Play

Use the arrow keys (or WASD) to place Billy between the hunters and the deer. If a deer gets shot, it's abject humiliation for Billy, and game over for you.

This feels so much like the old game n watch! I think the bushes could have been just black like the deer and the intro icon too just to keep the illusion consistent. The funny poses are good too. My best score was 720 ish but it gets pretty hard after that haha. Thanks!

I LOVE this. I remember these types of games! Really, really well done, the mood, the humor - I loved that Billy switched poses, it made it feel really dynamic even though they were still images, and the sound was great! All 5's from me, really awesome game!

This really reminds me of the old hand held pre-gameboy games, like mega man or the tiger electronics baseball. Creative switch of the human protecting the deer, and great interpretation of "keep it alive." Very clean too!

This was great. Funny idea. I liked the backstory. I kind of had to read it because otherwise it was a little absurd. Love the design of the handheld and the lcd. The music was great too!

As I started to play I was thinking "man this is pretty slow", but then when it started speeding up I got it. Nice job on that, it did create a lot of waiting right at the beginning though. I feel like it would be fine to have the bullets animate quickly to half way and then slow down just to get them game started faster, but shrug.

I played the first level and got 900isjh points. I checked out the other levels as well. It might have been nice to have you "beat" the levels and progress just to give a sense of accomplishment. I think that would make the novelty of the different level designs exciting to play through. I think you could have still maintained the score throughout and maybe cycled through. Or you could have added another element to the scoring system so it's not just how long can you survive. So you can have a sense of progression, fulfillment in "beating the game", and the score for bragging rights. Like pacman or something.

I'm really happy to have tried this game tonight. It work so well, making me fell nostalgic about this kind of liquid crystal toys I own when I was a child, you really recreate the same feeling. It super polished, what a great idea to do in a jam, make more of this !

What a wonderful art style! You totally nailed the feel of those old-school pre-console games. I love the faded out images in the background. Also, one thing that I noticed: It's a super nice QoL feature that when you first start the stage, the bullets move really fast until they get close, at which point the game really starts. The sound is also absolutely perfect!

Great job!

You really nailed the 'Game & Watch' aesthetic. Well done.

Also, the difficulty ramps up just right.

The gameplay/ramping difficulty level was so well handled (and that's always the trickiest part with these things), so really, well done on that front. It was entertaining, but challenging. Just hit the exact right sweet spot that can make games addictive. Also I loved the slightly retro interface for the UI, the aesthetic aspects all fit perfectly.

Now that's what I call dedication to an aesthetic!

Only flaw is that there's no option to romance the deer.
