Barterin' Buckaroo by chelC

[raw]
made by chelC for Ludum Dare 45 (JAM)

You're the rootin-est tootin-est cowboy known to Swamp Gulch... that is until you gambled away all your cowboy-ly possessions in a night of cards and drinking.

Make your way through town. Reclaim your stuff. Become the cowboy you know you are.

Barterin' Buckaroo is a point and click puzzle game reminiscent of the point and clicks from the 1990s and early 2000s. Part logic, part absolute nonsense, we hope you enjoy this rootin' tootin' romp around the dusty town of Swamp Gultch and trading with its colorful cast of denizens.

The art is very nice and funny! This is a nice take on click and point puzzle games and the characters were fun. The exchanging mechanic is nicely implemented. Very finished looking game. Great job!

Great art, music was alright to keep running for a bit. Fun little puzzle game, not always the most logical trades but really interesting take on the game. Masterfully done! Great job!

I question why I traded a crown for a cowboy hat but hey, the heart wants what the heart wants

Wow, this world clicks immediately! Hilarious setup, awesome characters, graphics that are otherworldly, the moody repetitive song doesn't even seem repetitive (seriously, I only noticed through the other commenter). If only the trading would sometimes be easier to figure out. But still, an amazing puzzle. Everything about your game is great! I love it

I loved the hell out of the style and presentation of this game. The character designs reminded me a lot of Professor Layton games, and I enjoyed the equivalently laid-back nature of it.

The trading did seem a tad like guesswork at times. I would know exactly what item I would need to give a shopkeeper to get my sheriff stuff, but I would kind of have to fumble around trading random things until I was able to obtain that key item.

That certainly doesn't mean I enjoyed it thoroughly though! Awesome game. :)

This game is awesome! I loved the graphics and the polish and everything. I was nervous at first about trading because I didn't want to trade myself into a corner, but the way the UI and everything worked really quickly made me feel at home. Good stuff!!

I beat it \o/ I love the music, and the whole feel of the game (: Well done! It took me a minute to remember that I could go back and talk to the one guy eventually, but overall it was a good puzzle!

I got into it and couldn't stop before I was done. Gameplay is simple, but not boring, best for LD game. Sound and art design reminded me of those old point and click games. Thanks for sharing! Cheers!

I really like the visual style of this game. It felt a bit like I was watching an episode of some weird old TV cartoon from my childhood. There is also a very colorful cast of characters and some nice non intrusive puzzle hints in the writing.

The only gripes I have are that characters have multiple dialog boxes, so I ended up missing a lot of barter reactions focusing only on the bottom part of the screen, and that it dropped me into a win screen very abruptly without me collecting all the items (I was still missing a badge).
Another thing is that after I got the hang of how the things work, I (for some reason) pretty much stopped reading any text and just went here and there dropping things. And it's a shame that I missed half the flavor text on items. Maybe it would be better to make it a little bit more intrusive, like always displaying the description of items in your inventory somewhere on the bottom.

Overall it's a nice little game with quite entertaining writing and very pleasing visuals.

I absolutely loved the design of the characters and everything about the world. I am a sucker for good pun names. The gameplay was fun just seeing what wacky things people would trade for. Each shop felt distinctly unique and I had fun jumping around trading stuff randomly. Great Job!

Great game! Loved the aesthetics and the music, and the bartering mechanic is original.

I must admit I ended up just droping items to the various vendors to see what new items they offered and I probably missed most of the flavour text.

But overall it's a really well crafted game, kudos!

The character design and general art style is great! Also really dig the play on words you've got there with Rick. :stuck_out_tongue: It was very interesting trying to figure out which items people would want, however I eventually ended up just guessing on a few of them because it was faster. The music fit well but was a bit repetitive and probably could have used a _little_ more variation. All in all, a pretty great little experience! Definitely captures that cowboy essence.

haha this game is great :) Quality art and solid writing! In a few places the text went outside the screen which was a shame because I wanted to read everything the characters said. Nice job!

One of the nicest graphics in the whole jam! Story was nice too, had a great feel to it.

Something to improve could be the graphics. The start screen looked different style than the shopkeepers, and the city map looked even more different. I like all of them, but they did not fit into the same visual world for me. Oh and the objects seemed distorted a bit when you got them!

But this is really just nitpicking, great game overall!

Excellent work! This game fits the theme, is fun to play, the music is fitting, sound fx work, and overall was easy enough to figure out 'how to play', thus making it addicting enough to want to complete.

This is really good. I love how the trading system wasn't super strict, so there were lots of possibilites and (as far as I could tell) no way to get stuck, since you could almost always reverse a trade. On top of that there were little twists to the mechanics (like finding the dagger in the dead hand). The art and audio were fantastic too. Great work!

Really well done look and feel! The music and sfx really sell the vibe, and I really appreciate the small touches like skipping repeated dialog and the punny names (oh man, Rick R Mortis!). Fantastic work; one of the best overall contenders I've seen so far :)

This game is really cool! I love the mood, art style, dialogue and sound design. The characters were memorable and the puzzles/bartering system was challenging, but a lot of fun. Perfect use of the theme too. This one really stood out to me, well done!
