Do-While-For by primitive-concept

[raw]
made by primitive-concept for Ludum Dare 47 (JAM)

WARNING: Contains flashing lights.

Hope you like cats. Or if you don't, maybe this will scratch some sadistic itch (and we'll all judge you).

Stuck in a strange world, break out of nested do, while, and for loops by manipulating variables determined by level components (eg: Kill enemies to reduce the enemyCount variable). Breaking out of the main loop progresses you to the next level.

Seems normal at first, gets weirder as you go. Much weirder. Stick with it! The reward is very much worth your time, I promise.

Top-down Shooting Controls: - WASD = Movement - Left Click = Fire weapon - E / Space / Right Click = Interact with objects

Updates:

This was easily the most problematic rollout I've done to date. Between using a customized ECS framework, trying to get nested loops yielding appropriately in a single coroutine, and a LOT of WebGL issues, this game was pretty much unplayable after submission (although it worked fine on my machine... ha... famous last words). Thank you to everyone who let me know when the game wasn't working.

Fixes had to be looked into each day after work, until I finally burned out and waited for the weekend to fix the remaining stuff. It's still pretty buggy (worst code I've ever written), but the game should be playable from start to finish now.

  • (10/06/2020): Fixed WebGL loader getting stuck at 90% (compression issue).
  • (10/07/2020): Fixed input system not working (code stripping issue).
  • (10/12/2020): Fixed endless coroutine loop preventing level 5 from loading. Experiencing another bug with audio not looping in final stage, which does break a lot of things dependent on audio clip timecode. Will be trying a workaround. Open bug in Unity described here: https://forum.unity.com/threads/unity-webgl-audio-not-looping-when-started-with-playdelayed.526952/ (fixed in 2020.2, I'm on 2020.1)

@primitive-concept @threehams fix the build by disabling compressing in unity - https://forum.unity.com/threads/uncaught-referenceerror-unityframework-is-not-defined-at-htmlscriptelement-script-onload-webgl.803967/

Looks like the same problem we had in the beginning. You have to switch the compression method in Unity to Gzip. That worked for us at least. Hopefully I could help.

Thanks for the heads up on the build not loading everyone -- glad I decided to check my notifications this morning. One of those cases of "Works on my machine" when I uploaded Monday.

Swamped with work right now, but will hopefully get this resolved tonight if I can. Will put a note in the description for now until I can generate a new build with the suggested fix and upload.

This was a really cool take on the theme. I wish I had thought of it. The post process effects were also a really nice touch.

I really liked the sfx and art style. The post processing effects were really well done, too.

For some reason the boss wasn't summoned properly. I was going round in circles for ages wondering how to lower that value. It worked correctly after I eventually died and restarted the level though.
The code mechanic was a cool idea but under utilised. All the levels could be completed easily without reading it as they were all just kill everything that moved and collect any shiny things.

Lol wat the heck :smile_cat: That was awesome! Totally weird and quirky and I like it. Boss music was EPIC! I was able to cheese the boss by staying mostly to the top-left, but otherwise didn't notice any other hiccups. The text was a little hard to read and I guess I wasn't even sure how the level progressed most times but hey, I pet the weird pixel demon cat god so I guess we're good.

I have no idea how you got a game like that to be scary but you did it. I felt myself on the edge of my seat while playing. Well done.

Love the final boss fight! Very unique to put kittens and scary together but it works. Great job!

This is probably the most bizzarre and unsettling game I've ever played on this jam. I loved the boss fight and the psychedelic effects, but found it kind of difficult to pay attention to both the code and the game at the same time, which is a shame, because there is some really interesting stuff in there. Other than that, I think you nailed pretty much every aspect of this game. Amazing job!

5/5 brilliant. Very trippy. The game got me hooked until the end.

I really enjoyed this game, and I'm glad you could take the theme as a jumping off point to make such a stylish and weird experience. Good job!

That's one weird and disturbing game. Nice retro art and some really trippy post effects. And lost of scary cats. I couldn't get past the mushroom level, I killed everything and nothing happened.
