Hell Defender by SpaceMonkey

[raw]
made by SpaceMonkey for Ludum Dare 45 (JAM)

One button VR wave shooter for Oculus Quest. But in HELL. We also have a Windows and WebGL build.

Controls - PC

  • WASD to move
  • Left click to shoot
  • R to reload

Controls - VR

  • Right controller trigger to shoot.
  • Point your hand down to reload

Disclaimers

  • The PC and WebGL builds were made post-deadline, but the gameplay is as similar as possible from the Quest game.
  • We made all the assets but the door, which comes from the asset store.
  • Our plan was to make the player start with nothing, make him grab the crossbow, and then heavily rely on pickups to become powerful enough to actually put up a fight. But we didn't have time to implement it, and because of that the game doesn't fit the theme at all. Sorry about that.

Dang, unfortunately I dont have a vr headset (yet)--and don't worry, I'm not looking for new people to play my game. I'm actyslly commenting because I'm genuinely curious about how to develop a vr game. Like how hard is it for a solo developer and what is the learning curve? How did you guys get started? Are there any good resources to point me towards?

Again, I'm so sorry guys that I can't play your game at the moment, but from the graphics... my type of game. ;)

@jordanvang The best way to start is to make non-VR games I'd say. First 2d, then 3d. I watched a lot of tutorials on Unity, C#, 3D, game design (Brackeys, Extra Credits, Blender Guru...) You can contact me on Discord or Twitter if you want to have a chat! Or even better is to join TigerJ's Discord so you can connect with a lot of nice devs : https://discord.gg/EKx5bbg

it would make more fun if you had Unlockables or something todo instead of always shoot the same Enemy

@elektroney good point! We wanted to have a small shop between waves but had a lot of other issues during the jam that made it impossible. We will probably do it post-jam though, as we now have all the necessary features.

Really good effort, works really well and is fun to play! I know it's a mechanic for VR but even on windows it was cool having to shoot the 3 points to teleport around the map. Wish there was sound! Would really tie the game together.

Edit: Nevermind, I played muted accidentally :p
Sound is actually very good!

overall the idea behind the game is not bad even it is not finished. interesting approach to tower defence genre. but I wished that the game was more focused on powerful actions rather than trying to perfectly aim especially when in the harder waves it becomes a bit frustrating, I would love to see stacking effect per successful shot to make area of effect or more effective kinda supershots. keep up the good work!

Amazing work with an interesting game. There is many good ideas in your game like displacement changing position on area, reload - it's more a simple fps. I had fun playing. Map is really well done. Very good background music. You deserve more ratings. Bravo ++

Hi guys, lastminute rating here, I wanted to play this on the Quest and did not find the time. Good little game overall, a lot more can be added later on. I am glad you put it on Sidequest, many will play it that way! I think changing the little demon characters to something more interesting would be great, more people would pick up the game.
What I really liked is, that when an enemy died it was blocking the path from the others! This is forcing them to go other ways and can be used strategically to create barriers too! In Elven assasin the orcs are coming on the exact same path whatever happens, so this is already an improvement!

This game is well done! I was not able to play on a quest but I've enjoyed this type game on similar headsets before and this seems like has what it needs. Some form of upgrades would of course be welcome, but that can't be held against a Jam game. The art style was nice and I appreciated the tracer available for shots. Overall this was a good entry!

Very playable! Some small things I'd recommend to improve: I think it would feel more satisfying if normal enemies only require one hit, and if there was some kind of effect when they die. The death sound gets repetitive, it usually helps to record 5-10 variations to mix it up a bit.

I first wanted to have enemies spawn on different points around the player, but I thinks its good to have them within a arc for the players field of view.
