Carry The Torch by Shadowmyst

[raw]
made by Shadowmyst for Ludum Dare 46 (JAM)

Carry a special kind of torch through the depths of The Dungeon. You will manage four resources: Health, Stamina, Focus, and of course your torch. Gather equipment and spend resources in order to climb through The Dungeon. The torch is both your source of power and your main weakness. If your torch drops to zero you lose the game. However if any of your other resources drop below zero the value will instead be taken from your torch. Additionally slain enemies will add to your torch resource.

Tutorial

Map

You may have to pan the map down to see your first node Access the map with the map button in the top right of your screen carrythetorchmaparrow.png Then click on the nodes (white circles) to explore them. You cannot explore a node if you have an event currently pending. Carrythtorchmap.png

Equipment

Equipment can be found in the box at the bottom left of your screen. Equipmentbox.png Hover over an equipment card to get a closer look and see it's function and click in order to activate it. carrythetorchcard.png The number and brain symbol in the top left is the focus cost to use the equipment. If you don't have enough focus you cannot use the equipment. The number in the bottom right of the card represents the number of uses, if it displays an "X" it can be used infinitely or at least until you run out of focus. Finally the trash can in the top right lets you click there on the card (don't click the zoomed in version, click the trash can directly on the card) to delete the equipment and yield you 2 torch.

Combat

carrythetorchcombat.png In order to win you must get your foe's health to zero, this is displayed in the upper right with a blood droplet. In the middle you have your attack and block (on the left side of the wood block) and your foe's attack and block (on the right side of the block). You can use the two sliders to burn stamina and health into attack and block respectively. Simply slide the slider to the desired value and press the checkmark. Then when you are ready to apply damage click the "Fight" button located in the bottom-middle of the screen. Remember your attack is reduced by your opponent's block and visa versa. You can use equipment such as revolvers by activating them during combat.

Not bad, could use some sounds and maybe a cleaner UX/UI. Took me longer than i'm willing to admit to figure out how to progress (i used SpaceBar, not sure thats the right way).

Thanks for the tip! Yeah I actually forgot to remove the Spacebar thing but it doesn't really effect anything so it works just fine!

I think that the lack of any character graphics lowers the accesibility of this game. It would be more engaging if we saw our character and the enemies. The font of the commands should be bigger and/or better color.

The idea is okay, but I found the game really difficult to play.

The concept of this game is amazing.
However I had a few issues:
- I couldn't click after I went to the second node (restarted and continued playing)
- The map went off the screen after a while
- I didn't quite understand the combat, especially if I didn't have the correct items
- I didn't have any audio, not sure if that's a bug. But some nice ambient music could've been nice

I really liked the idea and the general concept.
Keep at it.

Cool idea, the keeping the torch alive idea is a great take on the theme.
The mechanics were all cool enough, but I would have loved it if there was some more atmospherics around the dungeon environment.
Things like footstep noises when you travel down a node, and the torch having some kind of flickering light, that kind of thing really nails the atmosphere down and draws in the player.
I'd love to see a version with some more polish. Great work!
