Fleur Defense by SamStallion

Quarantine is no problem for Lizette Fleur; she has a garden to tend to! She can spend hours in her beloved greenhouse, but what’s this..? Where are all these bugs coming from? Good thing Fleur dabbles in the art of growing weaponized plants because it’s going to come in handy. Don’t let those nasty bugs get to your prized Giant Jade Blossom! Buy smaller potted plants and keep them watered to help protect it from the pests. Don’t let them destroy your lemon trees either, those lemons are valuable.
You can listen to the original soundtrack here! https://juniperparadise.bandcamp.com/album/fleur-defense-original-soundtrack

- If your prized flower is destroyed, it’s game over
- Plants can be bought and sold at the shop
- Swing at the lemon trees to collect valuable citrus goodness
- Make sure your plants are watered or they’ll perish

=== Controls === * WASD - Movement * Space - Jump * Left-click - Swing, Throw plant * Right-click - Watering Can * E - Pick up plant * Tab - Open Shop, Sell Plant * Shift - Dash
=== Gameplay Tips === * Hydration level of plants effects how fast they grow, keep those babies well watered! * Buy and Sell plants at the Jade Blossom (fully grown plants sell for more) * Well hydrated plants will heal themselves over time and dry plants will take damage * Lemons grow more valuable as the game progresses, protect those trees for a steady income * Sprinklers are a great way to keep a group of plants alive and fighting off bugs * The bug nuke is expensive, but you'll only need one hint hint

At first I wasnt certain what the watering can was for - I spent a fair bit of time wondering if they gave health back to trees damaged by bugs. This is likely because I'm a hoarder and didn't buy many of the smaller plants from the shop, so that is mostly on me. I also felt like the time before the first wave was quite long, but this could again be because I didn't buy much from the shop. Lastly, I wasn't certain if the side entrances were entrances for bugs, or teleports to the opposite side a la pacman style for the bugs! Some variety of indicator during wave prep time of where bugs are coming from may be nice if they are multiple entrances.
All in all, excellent work! I'm frankly floored that you set this all up in 72 hours, and I'm excited to see the future projects your group makes!!
Game works well, I'll admit I wasn't too sure what the plant coloring meant, because wattering and color did not collerate perfectly, and watering alone wasn't enough to bloom plant (was it only time?), but the grand lines were clear enough, make plants defend the master plant. Things got progressively harder such that it did not overstay its welcome and yet, I can say I played a lot longer than I expected! Only thing I think could be improved is plant variety, but with the polish on everything; who can complain?!
Plants and actions... plant vs zombie, dark soil, now this... Might be a secret winner formula!!
Well done!
An excellent with nice graphics, music and gameplay!
I enjoyed myself jumping up and down to transport my plants. And I earned much money by selling my plants.
High water allows a plant to mature faster, and if they are fully watered, they will heal.
Low water plants will begin to take damage and mature slower if not already grown.
Plant color is determined by their current health
The framerate it quite low on my PC, feels like <20 FPS
Once the gameplay is figured out, the difficulty is too easy and ramps up too slowly. It can take a very long time to feel challenging and there are lots of other games to look at... I stopped before I got to the nuke I'm afraid.
Would like to play this with a gamepad.
Good job the team!
Really enjoyed the game though! The movement and controls also felt really smooth and polished. Great work!

The gameplay is funny! (As a fan of "survive the waves" type of games, I can say I had a blast uwu)
The art is just wow, and the music is nice (I reqlly love the music playing during a wave, it feels kind of jazz-like, I really love it!)
Impressive, one of my favorites!

I had a lot of fun playing this game it's so pretty and lovely to look at, congrats on the amazing job you've done!

I want to get that money from lemons IRL
Really looking forward to finally play this and be sure I'll try my best to fix it myself :3
/edit: nvm, fixed by downloading again. weird.
Great game! Had lots of fun with it. The soundtrack is absolutely amazing. The preparation song especially has that 24/7-Chillhop-Music-to-Study-and-Relax-to vibe to it :DD
The animation work on the trees is a little detail that makes such a world of difference I feel. The animation work in general is phenomenal. Everything feels so slick and sensible.
Really polished up game! I am very thankful to be able to play it. I can't think of a single thing I did not enjoy. Absolutely great work!
Nice colour palette and interesting take on the Super Crate Box formula. Overall a very tidy and polished package with fantastic music. Thanks for sharing and congratulations on your entry!
Got a bit monotone around wave 4, but for jam this was awesome.
I wanted to keep playing but there is no telling how am I progressing or if its even endless. around Wave10 I got bored a little bit.
I also didn't understand the Red planets?
the music choice for defending I didn't like.its a good track needs a little bit dangerous beats. even though its a gardening game :)
all in all I wanted more action and to progress faster. probably will get hard later IDK is there a play through for this?
over all this is one of the best entries I've played so far. great job!
We went for a more chill vibe for the music, but if your mother plant gets below 25% the music changes up to something more menacing. Thanks for the feedback though, I can see it needing to be a bit more intense.
Ideally we would want the difficult to ramp up faster. As it turns out it's very difficult to tune balance and make the game simultaneously!
I found it hard since you need to go back and forth. The enemies come from the top and to be able to get a plant you must get to the bottom and bring it there one by one.
1. I think the game could benefit from seeing the entire stage, sometimes it was hard to know what I should do because I just didn't have visibility on if a plant needed watering or if I needed to find a bug to kill.
2. Hitting the enemies just felt a little... wrong. I think it would be helpful if they had a little knock back or their speed changed a bit, they just keep steam rolling through you.
3. I struggled a little bit with the jumping, sometimes I would be trying to jump and my character just wouldn't. I am not sure if there is a delay after landing where you cant jump again, or if it was something else. Regardless, I was frustrated when I missed jumps.
Overall I think the idea is amazing, but I really struggled to fully enjoy the game because of the above issues.
It is difficult to manage your plants out of sight, which is part of the fun/challenge. Though, if we continue this project I would like to add some UI elements to notify players that plants are taking damage out of view. Sound queues would also be helpful. We have some sounds for when lemon trees are being attacked and the sound fades based on the distance to the tree. To go along with this I would also add more ways to navigate from top to bottom, like an unlockable teleporter or something.
Initially the melee attack had a knockback on enemies. It was way too strong, you could basically infinitely hold up a wave of enemies by knocking them back slightly (same with the melee plants). We removed the knockback and increased health scaling of enemies to combat it with the thinking that melee attacks are useful early on but lose their effectiveness as the game progresses so you would need to rely on plants to do the dirty work. We had discussed having player abilities being unlocked through the shop, but those ideas got cut midway through the jam due to scope.
I'm always looking for ways to improve the responsiveness of controls. There is a variable jump (which might be what you're experiencing) where you can control your jump height. Hold down jump to get max jump height, let go early to cut it early. In the future I would add things like input buffers and ledge forgiveness to give some leeway to pressing the jump button early/late.
Congrats for your entry!
PS: how do you get that nuke anyway? Special cheat code? :D)

Thanks for playing our game!
We had discussed ways to regrow the lemon trees but ran out of time to implement it. Something like a lemon tree fertilizer you can carry up to the trees then water.
The plant selling is actually extremely overpowered and should be nerfed significantly. We're looking into other ways of making money if we continue working on this project. I wont spoil the strategy for anyone, but it is op :]
Music and sound were great as well.
Really just an amazing amount of polish for a jam!
I love tower defenses and you applied a very interesting mechanic.
The art is very cute and well finished and the music very well done. Really enjoyed!
Congratulations!
