Don't Freeze

The spiritual... predecessor... to that one game about going hungry. Can you escape the forest before you go mad?

Hey, I think this place looks familiar...

Goals

  • [x] Find the river.
  • [x] Craft a bridge.
  • [ ] Don't Freeze.

Controls

All controls below are given in-game. - Move with [W,A,S,D]. - Open the Recipe Book with [R]. - Click on an item to view its name. Click again to drop. - Drop valid items on eachother to craft new ones. - You can't replenish hunger -- that's your time limit to escape. - Click the fire to start. - Don't Freeze.

Recipes

The below is all spoilers for the crafting mechanic in-game.

Conventional

Items are created by dropping them on eachother - 1x Lashing: 3x Leaves - 1x Rope: 3x Lashings - 1x Not-So-Sturdy Stick: 2x Twigs - 1x Crappy Tool-rod: 1x Not-So-Sturdy Stick + 1x Rope - 1x Crappy Axe: 1x Crappy Tool-rod + 2x Pebbles - 1x Sturdy Tool-rod: 1x turdy Stick + 1x Rope - 1x Sturdy Axe: 1x Sturdy Tool-rod + 2x Pebbles - 1x Empty Cup: 1x Plank + 1x Stone + 1x Sturdy Stick - 1x Bridge: 3x Planks + 2x Logs + 2x Rope

Cutting

Items are created by hitting an item with an axe - 1x Log = 2x Planks - 1x Not-So-Sturdy Stick = 2x Twigs - 1x Sturdy Stick = 2x Not-So-Sturdy Sticks

Resources

Items are created by hitting a resource with an axe - Tree Log: 0-1x Sturdy Sticks, 0-2x Not-So-Sturdy-Sticks, 0-2x Twigs, 1x Log [Tool Level: 0+] - Tree Stump: 0-1x Sturdy Sticks, 0-2x Not-So-Sturdy-Sticks, 0-2x Twigs, 1x Log [Tool Level: 0+] - Stone: 1x Stone, 0-2x Pebbles, 0-1x Flint [Tool Level: 1+]

Other

  • Filled Cup: Acquired by dropping an empty cup onto the river.
  • Fire: Acquired by dropping a piece of flint on a tree log/stump. Be warned, Fire is hot! It also doesn't last long.

Vitalities

The human body is vital, and therefore must be kept in tip-top shape. There are three vitalities to consider:

  1. Heat
  2. Thirst
  3. Hunger
  4. Keep your temperature in check. The ideal value is 34°C. Fall too low, or too high and you will meet your timely demise (namely <24°C, and >50°C). Keep a flint or two in your pocket for a portable heat-source where needed.
  5. Your body must stay hydrated. Craft empty cups and fill them with water at the river to regain lost hydration. Be warned, however, as drinking cups of cool river water will lower your body temperature.
  6. In this cruel forest, hunger can't be gained; it can only be lost. Escape before you starve, or you'll probably die or something, idk.

Tips

  • Always keep a flint on the ready; same goes for a cup of water.
  • Try to remember where spawn is, it's the only zone with naturally-recurring pebbles.
  • Twigs only spawn near the tops of trees and blend in quite well with the ground.
  • Don't Freeze.

If you do die, however, there is a continue button. There are no consequences other than you having to live with the guilt of dying in perhaps the easiest game on the planet.

If you're planning to make a post jam version, please include some kind of interactive tutorial, since this is a pretty complicated game compared to most jam games. Also, it would've been neat if the player was a little bit faster or if you didn't distort the entire screen with post processing when it's too warm or too cold. Other than that, it was really, really good! The crafting was fleshed out, as well as the rest of the mechanics, and the presentation was on point. Did you really make this in the time limit? Just asking because it seems a little bit TOO fleshed out. Or did you get help from other people? If not, then I'm just impressed.

This was fun, and I see a lot of potential in it! I really liked the crafting mechanics, but I made rope three times and my player tossed it in the trees before I could snatch it. In the end, I froze.

I liked the mood.Character move really slow and the post-processing is a little annoying. But still a great work.

It has such a nice and complete pixel aestetic, might've mistaken it for a game NOT made in 3 days.
Very well done, I liked it a lot :)

I love this game! The visual effects were superb, you had a variety on craftable items, your theme interpretation was interesting and lead to a cool world design! Overall one of the best games this LD. Hope you reach the 20 ratings mark!
