Limbo Library by Herman Chau

[raw]
made by Herman Chau for Ludum Dare 47 (JAM)

It was another ordinary day of working at the library when — oh dear what happened — there are monsters everywhere and a talking skull in the corner mocking you! You try to find your way through the labyrinth of rooms but some curse has made it so that your day starts over after 60 seconds!

Limbo Library is a top-down shooter roguelike made for Ludum Dare 47. The theme was "stuck in a loop" and we ended up making a game that we described to ourselves as "Minit meets Enter the Gungeon".

  • Controller support.
  • ~5 minutes per playthrough.
  • Featuring talking skulls Maria and Louie. Oh, and the Li-bear-ian.

My favorite so far. The controls felt good and I liked having to pick up a curse every time you go to the shop. The art and music were good as well. Very polished!

I really hope you keep working on this. The ending was... missing something.

Overall this is a really solid entry. The graphics are charming, the audio is on point, and the game loop felt tight and fair while still providing a bit of a challenge. I usually try to provide constructive criticism when possible but honestly the only thing this entry needs is more time.

Great work!

Thanks @fireslash! Yep, we got a bit too ambitious with scope I'd say :p. Post-jam update perhaps?

This was really well polished. Loved sound effects, and music. The skull was funny, and that ghost... that was super cute.

Wow just wow, smooth 2d animations and gameplay, intresting bargaining system, good job. I always enjoy seeing others make cool stuff with godot (I made my game with godot as well). So are you planning to publish the source code? I'd really love to see how that text box works.

This game is really good, I don't even know what to focus on. Gameplay, graphics, music, all fantastic for a jam game, and you guys even snuck in some humor as well! I played this on stream today if you want to check it out: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/762816555 (45:40) Solid jam entry!

Wow, amazing amount of content and generally pretty polished! The game is very fun the first few rounds, but after a bit it gets repetitive to pass through the same rooms (although you did manage to reduce this feeling gating paths that can only be used with the blink ability). Seeing the same room changed, like with the poison tiles, was also a way to reduce this feeling. Apart from that I found a bit frustrating to reach a dead end and not have a way to fasttravel when you have almost 30 seconds left, it only happened once per playthrough though. Finally wanted to praise the consistent art and animations and the fitting music and SFX. Congrats on the game!

Spectacular! Well done. I could see this being a full game with just a bit of extra effort. Making the gameplay more challenging in a fair way will be the biggest obstacle.

Super fun game flow, LOVE the music, and especially the USAGE of the music, it really sells the silly lighthearted setting.

I felt the time might have been a little harsh, but I guess I won on my 3rd attempt, so it wasn't overly difficult. The hex + shop idea is good, although personally I think the hexes might add up a bit too quickly if you fall behind which is a bit nasty...

The final boss encounter was incredible, I liked the part where he did that huge BZWEWEW attack, and the huge sweeping laser beam, not to mention the really clever thing I won't spoil here.

Gonna comment on the music again cause it was so good and so perfectly timed, I had a grin on my face the whole time. Great job!

this is properly the most fun game that I have played so far, only thing that I missed is some impact when you kill stuff, example feathers particles when you kill a chicken, with is a nitpick, that is all I could come up with, this is a very good entry.

Great job, all the aspects of the game are getting along very well, it just seemed a bit unbalenced with the hexes, for exemple "hex tiles" is hell !

That's a full 5 everywhere for me, alas! :joy:

After figuring out the first way what to do, I finally understand what strategies to use (save money and camp in a spot till time runs out to avoid risking dying) and thus the second time around was better.

I got really spooked when I stumbled upon the boss, but the story it gave instead was wholesome.

Too bad I thought I won and stopped moving to listen to it, and the trailing ghost got to me
