:informationsource: About :informationsource:

When the theme was announced, there was a big OOF going around the table.

It was one of those that most of our group of five had considering too narrow, resulting in lots of similar games.

We really wanted to do another 2D pixel art scroller, so we had to come up with a game mechanic to fit the theme.

Just play the game to discover it!

To get through the levels you need to walk without stopping. On the top left corner you see your current highscore and a needed highscore. Under that you see a multiplier that increases while you walk and by that increases the points you get.

If you reach the end of the level without having enough points the level loops. level1.jpg

This is great! The sounds are hilarious, there is storytelling, the game itself is really simple but I like how you interpreted the theme.

YOOOOOOoooooOOO. I love the style of this game! simple controls and great immersion. I find the theme implementation rather generic but the rest of the package is quite wonderful from gameplay to sound design.

Cool game! i love it and it remains me of retro game <3
the control where a i little uncomfortable i would add a second attack button maybe "j" or "k"
and finally i couldn't tell what would kill me or not.. an red outline (for example) would help!
great game! i have a ton of fun <3

The pixel art is really beautiful! I think it might be good-looking if the text in the upper-left corner can also be set to a pixel font? The music rearrangement based on oriental classical pieces is also impressive.

This game is very cool, it felt weird to attack with S key, it lacks from feedback! It would be cool effects from attacking and some other stuf, however it was fun! Great job on this and the graphics, also props for having Harakiri evey time myself HAHA

This is a great submission. It has a lot of content for such a short period of time! I think that some more gameplay variety and some feedback would be cool, but great work!

Fun and interesting game. Reaching the virtues is a little shocking, you arrive at the point without even knowing it and then it jumps to the name of the next virtue screen.

@paulhudson yeah thats a bit unfair.. technical issue with the raycast that determines wether you can jump or not.. i never realised this because after hours of playing i was speedrunning through these levels without seeing this happening. Im going to fix this next weekend for an Update but that will not be up for the voting period. Thanks for the feedback though

The graphics are pretty good, the music is fitting too. The jump and run physics were a bit frustrating though.

This is so brilliant! The sounds effects are extremely appealing and the art is perfect. I would play a full campaign of this! I wish the counter in the top left had more meaning behind it or significance to what it was, I assume you needed to fill that before continuing to the next virtue?

I like it! The story and art feel great :) I wasn't able to finish (on the clouds, my "streak" was zeroed randomly every few seconds, maybe it's a bug, or maybe I don't really fully get the mechanics (and speaking of the clouds, the blue ones disappeared after the first cycle)), but I enjoyed the little story. The game has a great mood, nice job!

@suchista Thanks for pointing that out! We had little time for testing so this could very well be a bug.. It does not seem to happen always though (hopefully)

I loved the storyline and the art was really well done! The only minor thing I would suggest is the shrine gate kind of looked like it was floating until I got a better look at the base, maybe consider lightening the color a bit to make it more visible? Anyways, great game!

This is a really impressive and polished game! I liked the variety of the art, and the main mechanic was fun. One minor thing is that right now you can cheat the game by pressing 's' constantly, so maybe a cooldown on the attack would be good. Also, on the last level, my points didn't reset when I died.

What I liked most was how nicely every aspect fit together to make a really convincing experience. Amazing job!

Rich level design! Impressive amount of content for a jam game. Not sure if it's expected but in one level all platforms disappeared and I had to go though it three times before it let me finish.

Overall, great job!

I really like this, great game! Had fun playing it and loved the music, sound design (the wind, chimes, etc... btw: is there a meaning to that "yuoooouuuuuh"-voice that comes with the virtue-titles?) and overall atmosphere, also with the level design (lanterns, torii, etc) and the game art. If you consider developing it further, maybe the virtues can be represented in the level challenges/tasks/mechanics even further? Great choice with the screen size! Wanna be a bushi now... or watch a Kurosawa movie

Really loved your game! Like it hooked me right from the beginning and I really wanted to finish it but - am I the only one that got stuck at the "respect your environment" level? I got enough points and it still loops for me. Also I liked the little whistle sound when he jumps :) Also why does the scroll look like a dead mans hand?

//nevermind I tried it another time and managed to win! super fun experience would definietely pay for a full version of this game

@nyubi Thanks for the feedback! Regarding your question:

According to my research this sound is called **Kakegoe** which is a shout that is performed in traditional japanese theater. It is often lead by a small drum (not sure how that is called). You can here a MUCH better version of that excact thing here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wj7DjWc6ZVE

Cool game!
I have read the comments above and I relate to what people liked too and also agree with their improvement suggestions.

So I will try to bring something new:
If you chose the exotic screen ratio because we need to see what is coming in advance while keeping moving that's a nice solution. And I also liked it because it felt like being a movie character. You could also try to have the character not centered but somewhere on the left that would allow you to zoom a bit more on your great pixel arts while keeping the same distance of view toward the right.

A very bold and interesting concept. The most interesting thing is not even the very fact of being in a loop, if you have not gained the required number of points, but the fact that you can kill yourself in order to start over. It's too deep narrative game.

I love the amount of content for this game considering it's a jam, feels just right. I did struggled with dying from things I thought were background art and sometimes took a few tries to realize what I was dying from.
