NOAS by ROBOWARRIOR1982

[raw]
made by ROBOWARRIOR1982 for Ludum Dare 46 (JAM)

Numeric Operating Armored System (NOAS) is my prototype for the LD46.

NOAS is a top down shooter with a TPS view, there is a tutorial in game to explain the control and the goal of the game, see more on my itch.io page.

NOAS was realised with GAME MAKER STUDIO, that's a challenge for me to make a 3D GAME with this game engine !

I made an HTML5 version but prefer the windows version to play if possible (better resolution and speed).

SHOOT01.png SHOOT03.png

CONTROL : WASD to move, Mouse to aim and shoot (left for normal shoot, right for stunning shoot) ! Use V to switch the view, press space to continues dialogs, ALT+ENTER on the windows version to enter in fullscreen mode.

Software used to make this prototype : Game Maker Studio, Blender, Inkscape, Audacity. 21/04/2020 Fix -Invert the texture uv for "clue block" -Correct "espace" to "space" in text -Prevent activation of multiple spawner -Press space display now immediately all the text in narrator -Reduce the audio gain 24/04/2020 Fix -Solved a collision problem with "clue block"; -Added "escape" toogle fullscreen in windows version; -Added key_letter 'M' to return menu instantly; -Added a variable to memorise and restore the camera view after dialogs. -Added a condition to prevent fire with the 2 shot in the same time.

WOW! This is very polished, YOU EVEN ADDED SKINS!!!, Sadly the graphics are not very good, but all this polish totally makes up for it. Thank you!

(and I like the "espace" instead of "space");

Hi! good job! I will suggest to try to level down the sounds volume! I got scared when I first destroyed the enemy hahahaha!

I got stuck in the first level after the tutorial but the mechanics seemed to be well implemented, movement feels smooth and shooting is fun. I'd probably work more on the audio and graphics, specially on the color palette. The scenario felt too empty and I didn't notice that the brown things were enemies before I was damaged by them and where I was supposed to go after beating them.

Good work. I agree with the comment about levelling down some of the sounds a bit though. Great job :)

I like this! It reminds me of a top down StarFox64. I almost wish I could play in the third person a little more...but I guess that would make it way more SF64. It's fun, polished, and I'm glad you included a tutorial. Great stuff!

I've found this game very high polished but tedious in a long play. The first momments of the game were really good because of how "smooth" is the feel of the game. One small thing, the slow "skip to next chat" wasn't for me. But really well done, it's fantasticaly polished.

I'm amazed you managed to make so much! I like the sound effects too, and the fact that you can pick which color you want to be is great.

Great design, I like the perspective conversion in the tutorial, but I don't know why I often can't move on. The red obstacles do not disappear, and no new enemies emerge

@jacob-ibanez-sanchez @drunkardwolf i was lack of time to adjust the sound or make a menu for that, sorry but i work alone and i missed too the compo, didn't have time to make music too, but i appreciate your comments ! @hundred yeah it was easy to create skins with 3D models change a part or texture (like fortnite for exemple), i didn't have time to polish and do a skull tank or poney tank, but that's the way !(but the base is here). @simin i didn't play at SF64, but i appreciated that's your remind this ! thanks you ! @beregalto yes TPS view is more immersive, but the top down view is better for fight !

@kagerowo yeah i agree i planned too more things.... a boss, a small story, drawed characters (as you see on my page), but didn't have many time maybe is too ambitious for one only guy in 72 hours ^^. So this is why the story can be empty. For the enemys i agree i think the better idea is to make all of them with the same color (like red, hum game design ?). Thanks for your comment !

I like how there's a lot of content, which is very great!
But the levels got boring and repetitive, sadly
With more variation, and mechanics / enemies added as the game progresses, it would really switch things up!
But it shows that there was a lot of work done with this, overall not bad
A cool 8bit background music would make a lot of difference
The graphics idea is kinda cool

@yinian Maybe it's a bug, i have test a lot of things but i made the tutorial at the end and maybe there is a conflict with the script, have you played the windows or the HTML5 version ? i'll test that later (need to rest and sleep now). thanks for your comment.

@dezom yes i made a lot of work but that explain too the basic models unfinished texture....no music, i need to work even faster ;) ! But if you look my itch.io pageyou see i practice a lot ;)Thanks you for your comment !

@simansimon yeah i agree ! I made the levels a the end (copy/paste and modified) so it can be little boring that's always the same thing but have your find the codes and secrets ?, i prefered to add level, and not more ennemy(because of the time of modelling etc...adjusting).

@a-312 you can't skip the tuto, you must finish the tutorial to unlock the level and don't worry there is a save system (sorry for the tuto but i think it's necessary !).

*For your next games, I think inscrease the text speed will be a good thing (or key/setting to display all the text without text animation)*

I loved the change of view which adds dynamism to the game and the multiple graphic details, like the connection message which flashes as if it could break the connection. full of nice little details

Just finished playing your game and felt amazing! You achieved to do a lot of job in such a limited time.
Idk if you can skip the tutorial, but maybe adding some 'skip' button for text dialogues if you saw it before could be awesome (for example, I died and had to read all over again). Also, felt weird the fact that I could go to level4 without playing the previous 3.

Also, sounds are a bit too loud maybe?

However, it was an amazing experience! Really good job there!

Wow- super impressive- 3D in game maker?! I thought that was just a myth! Seriously, Played on web and I think the controls feel amazing. Kinda blew my mind with the view change. Everything seems really responsive, and clear instructions help avoid any confusion. Reminded me of Tron, but like for real. Great work!

@joemid Yes, game maker editor isn't do for 3D but there are basic fonctions to make it, it's root(only with gml code) but it work, and it's very light (has you see my exe size are 4mo do the same thing with UNITY ENGINE that's not the same ! But obviously there is no fonctions for 3D physic, elaborate light effect etc... but you can use shader too. In fact for a prototype or a small game it's interesting (like an retro FPS for exemple). Thanks for your comment !

Yes! The futuristic minimal aesthetic gameplay paired with some cool anime characters is a great match. The female character's outfit really reminded me of Char from Gundam! I think it would be awesome to see more different types of projectile effects to spice things up! The way you implemented the theme was also very creative, needing to keep a guard alive in order to use their biometric data to access the door like in movies. Great job!

Awesome game! The first among games I played for LD46 that I really enjoyed! I even replayed some levels to find keys.
Suggestions:
1) When I defend the white key it is better to have a different animation for it usage. Sometimes destroying animation for white key when I defend it confuses because I think that I killed it by accident.
2) When playing with non-default view (view like you are driving the tank - not top-dowm) after tutorials or some intros my view became default again. I would remember the state of view when you play animation to return back to correct view.
Really good game

I like the mechanic of having to avoid damaging an enemy, it really adds some tactical aspect by preventing the player from just zooming around and shooting blindly. The concept grew a bit old over time but I still appreciate the sheer quantity of content in the game (especially for 3 days of work xD). Btw I can shoot bullets extremely fast by holding both right click and left click at the same time, bug or feature ?
🎤 ROBOWARRIOR1982
24. Apr 2020 · 07:07 UTC
@oursbleu Thanks you for your comment ! It's a feature of course, no in fact i have forgot to limit and you can effectively fire with the 2 types in the same time, i'll think i'll fix that today ;)

@yaroslav-gozak Thanks you ! I'll create a variable to save the current state of the camera and replace after narration phase.

@marcusnystrand In the tutorial, 2 ennemys spawn, if you kill the ennemy without a marker, a next wave is generated, if you kill the bad ennemy, a new wave is generate but the counter is reinitialise, to pass the gate you need to kill twice all the ennemys except the ennemy with a marker. Thanks you for playing. (the big thing is also an ennemy, he just don't move in the tutorial).

This game was the most interesting way to have the theme of _Keep it Alive_ so far, due to how it's an escort mission where your escort's actually trying to kill you.

Every other _Keep it Alive_ is about some defense target, but this one actually makes you hate your escort.

The game was really well made. I liked the model of the tank and the level design was also pretty cool. The tutorial was very good and really helped me understand the game. I didn't play the final level though, since I didn't remember the combination, sorry. Also I think the levels were too many or too long, since there were no new mechanics, enemies or environment to see. That made the last levels a bit boring even though the game itself was pretty good. All in all great game.

Pretty fun game once you get the hang of it! I was pretty confused by the message when you shoot the wrong target (still not sure what it says..."Echo"?), nearly shat myself on the first kill cause of the volume and couldnt really use third person cause my turret would keep spinning left (might be some weird input on my side) I still had a great time (especially once i found out that you can hold down the mousebutton to fire xD)

Clean graphics and sound fx fit well. I like the concept of finding keys and pass codes hidden in the levels to unlock new areas :) However, the access point combat loop felt too repetitive and I began to lose interest after level 6. Congrats on your entry!

Nice and simple but not really sure how does it relate to the "Keep It Alive" theme
🎤 ROBOWARRIOR1982
25. Apr 2020 · 19:28 UTC
@croped I can't really lock the mouse position in the HTML5 version, if your cursor return to the center of the screen (there is an area not precisely the center) you can see that stay in place, there is no problem in the windows version.

@boxedmeatrevolution @drskort I agree the last levels is not really finished by lack of time, this is a prototype but i enjoyed you take the time to test all the levels !

@bot12313 My interpretation of the theme is keep alive an ennemy to open the passage so i think it's perfectly in the theme, and i didn't see a lot of game with this approach !

Thanks you all for testing, i maked a lot of effort to create this and now i can use it to make a bigger thing.

Very nice. Reminded me of Tron and Stellar7, great also the tutorial and the changing views. Also the mechanics of shooting combined with the exploring a maze to find keycards works quite well, I think.
Sometimes during fight the "key" enemy is marked very late and gets destroyed, and maybe the "Connected" blinking sign could stop after a while.. Played the web version, which worked otherwise really well.
Good entry!

Pretty nice and a extremely impressive solo job for a short jam time. Shooting felt satisfying.

I encountered a bug though when the enemies stopped coming and the way forward didn't open. Happened twice. I was just left standing there, neither failed, nor could proceed.

@fabula-rasa very strange in which level the one ? And you have played on HTML5 version ? In the algorythm the near firewal is unlock when wave was succesfull destroyed twice, maybe the function may don't find this object but this is rare bug, i haven't encounter it in my tests, and many players didn't have problems. Thanks you for testing and could you tell me the version and the level ? i check that !

@robowarrior1982 Yes - it was html version and in a very first level. First "gate" opened no problem, second doesn't want to. I'm on Firefox, if that matters.
