Fuel Hungry by WubbaDuck

[raw]
made by WubbaDuck for Ludum Dare 46 (COMPO)

You are a flame that need to find its way back to the furnace. Grab more fuel along the way to keep your light alive! Watch out for those pesky water droplets though...

Note: The WebGL player seems to be glitching out for some people. If that is the case for you, try one of the downloadable versions.

Controls

Move: WASD or Arrow Keys

Jump: Space

Drop down: Press the down direction and hit the jump key to drop through some platforms.

Builds I have tested the Windows and Linux build, but I have not tested the Mac build. So if someone tests it and can let me know the verdict I'd appreciate it.

I am sometimes jelous of other devs creativity, who would have thought of this, great idea. I love that you had time to polish the controller, its very responsive for which I give an extra credit. Good job.

The idea that you can see less and less as the fire dies out is really interesting!

@tomeks Thank you for noticing the polish on the controller. After my first Compo game (Transfusion) I was really unhappy with how the controls worked. So I decided to make that my main goal with this game.

This is an innovative spin on the platformer genre, I like the concept! The jump physics feel solid and I think the drop-down ability is a good addition as well. The in-game tutorial works well also.

Interesting mechanic - you have to decide whether its better to just charge through the water to save on time or to wait for it.

Looks like we had similar ideas about keeping light levels up :) Thought the platforming controls were clean, and I had fun with the game!

It is a simple platformer game, but with a twist, you playing as a fire. And it is smartly creative. Your life is your view (the light), genius! But maybe there can be some improvement for the game: From what I think is about the level design.. Some obstacle is very hard (at least for me), and the game mechanic is same, there is no additional "mechanic" introduced in the game, like more types of enemies, more mechanic, etc..

The good part is your graphics is good, very good, I like it! The animation and sound effect is really good to.. Nice game!

@piko-monde Thanks for the feedback! I seem to have a tendency to make my games with a high-ish difficulty. I will keep that in mind in the future. I was also hoping to add more enemies/mechanics to the game, but time caught up with me. I'm glad you enjoyed it.

I really like it! I think the ligth shouldn't go out linear, because when you have a small radio of light you are probably dead already. Well even with that I made it to the furnace ;)

I love the idea! The mechanic with burning brighter really gives you a reason to pick up the pace or go for that harder to reach spot with the fuel can!

Fun game with a good concept. There was only one jump which was frustrating (where you have to jump into a really small space), but for the rest I enjoyed it

I like how your life is your light radius. Maybe you could make it more defined so we have a better measure of how much time we have left. A bit of zoom would be nice as well.

That's some interesting gameplay. however, in regards to the gameplay I feel like it would be more fun if it were the opposite way and your radius actually grew bigger if you were lower on fuel.In reality this probably wouldn't make a lot of sense but the feel of the game would improve because the player will be going a 100% to survive at all times. In this version you pretty much know you're about to die once your radius gets small enough and at that point you're just kind of expecting your death to happen. One final piece of advice would be to add better sound effects but this is a game jam so I get that you might've been short on time. With all that being said though I think you really have a very cool idea that fits the theme of this compo very well :)

I really liked the idea behind the life bar being bound to the visibility of the scene. That negative feedback loop was really helped sell the mood; great design choice. I appreciated things like coyote frames in the jump leniency and thought the feedback was overall decent in the windows version, though the HTML5 version was unplayable. Thanks for the game, I'd love to see this expanded out into something longer / more polished.

Pretty fun game, I like the idea of the flame dying out. I didn't feel like the platforming mechanics were quite good enough to really sell me on this, especially a tiny passageway you need to jump through. But pretty fun overall.

Really cool and innovative combination of platforming/collecting mechanics with limiting lighting effect and countdown. Enjoyed it!

This is a fine platformer for sure. Its simple but it gets the job done. It gets a bit scary when it gets dark thats what makes it stands out from the other platformers. Really had fun going through the levels!

I love the basic idea, the edges of the platforms might be a little tight. Multiple times I was waiting for a jump and had it dump me when coyote time ran out. Regardless, I like it!

Nice take on the theme. The jumping felt good and responsive, which is always the most important thing. There were a few jumps where it felt like you needed to half clip through a platform tho. The Sound got a bit boring after a while, I would have liked some music and some constant fire rustling effect.
I would have liked a Hard mode where water kills you instantly. Also sometimes i managed to double jump, i think that is a bug?

@ausstein Thanks for the feedback! I had planed on adding some fire sound effects and music but ran out of time.

I really like the hard mode idea! I also thought about adding a completionist achievement for when the player collects all of the fuel in a single run, and a timer for how long it took the player to complete or how long they lived.

I'm interested in the double jump experience. Could you describe that to me? It is a bug so I'd like to try to recreate it.

Great job! I really enjoyed this. The action felt snappy. On occasion, I was able to fall out of the world when I hit the first water drop. I like that the flame has some weight to it--lots of platformers made in Unity feel floaty. I also really liked the tutorial as part of your game mechanic at the beginning.
