Pumpkalanes by epb9000

[raw]
made by epb9000 for Ludum Dare 47 (COMPO)

Guide Ghosty through a barrage of pumpkins by moving left and right. Getting hit extends the game, but the pumpkin pattern loops every 10 seconds so if you're having trouble, try to pay attention to your round's pattern.

I apologize in advance for my crime against music.

misunderstood the point of the game in the beginning because I though I was supposed to eat all the pumpkins instead of avoid them haha. Maybe make that a little more obvious by making the sound effects reflect that

Awesome complete game, I was so hungry I was eating all the pumpkins wondering why the game wasn't ending hahaha
Ghosty is super cute, loved the little victory animation
Absolutely not a "crime against music" as you say either, I had it running for a really long time (since I was eating all the pumpkins) and didn't get sick of your tunes (::::

A bit of feedback: for some reason it won't even run on my Mac Catalina "Not supported on this type of mac". Looks cool though thanks for making a game for us!

@fabdynamic New build ready for Mac OSX, updated the link. Looks like I needed to update my copy of the engine.

@seezogames Oh, indeed. My original sound for that did, but it drove me absolutely crazy. I should have tried a little harder creating a replacement, haha. I suspect this will be a common comment.

fun little game while it lasted, and a cute character. There were some pumpkins(?) that looked different (red and blue) and I wasn't sure if they were any different to the normal ones.

Very cute little game. Once I realized that I was supposed to be avoiding the pumpkins I found that it was fun to try to remember the path I took last time.

Really nice little game, I liked the idea of hitting obstacles making the clock go up instead of killing you.

Cute models too!

@minibetrayal The difference isn't super huge. The blue ones behave the same as orange but move 30% slower and the red ones move 40% faster. The red ones also target the player at their initial launch and spawn at regular intervals. Varying the speeds and behavior slightly allowed me to tune the difficulty without just dumping more pumpkins or writing a ton of behavioral code.

[Edit: Also, click "Hard Start" for a more difficult run that'll generally take a bit longer to clear.]

I really enjoyed this simple and fun game! Not so bad for the music, it gives a good mood (:

I didnt realize I had to avoid the pumpkins and not eat them haha. Even when I was playing it wrong I still liked it. The music is nice too

I also tried to eat everything before looking for my amazing score. With the perspective, it was hard to determine if I would hit a pumpkin or not. A top view would make this clearer. After a few loops, I did get a feel for it though.

Well done.

Graphics, music and mood are good enough to not distract.
I think the balance is where this game shines. Difficulty is at point. The flow, the dynamics, the mood. Theese parts are great.

As others said I ate all of the pumpkins at first before realizing my time was not going down. It was cool to start to remember parts of the loop and plan ahead which route I should take. My only issue was that the controls seemed a bit unintuitive since the ghost seems to rotate around a point rather than slide left to right so sometimes it seemed like I would back into a pumpkin and eat it. Good entry and cute graphics!

I loved the character, and the gameplay was pretty fun once I realized what I had to do to reach the end. The hitbox was hard to get a feel for, which made it difficult to dodge the pumpkins than it maybe should've been. I think some simple changes that would lead to a big improvement would be to add some feedback when you hit a pumpkin which indicates that it's not a good thing (like a particle effect or something), and maybe add a graphic or effect to visualize the level bounds so you can see how far the character can move to the sides and more easily plan where you want to go.

Overall though, it's a solid submission. Nice job!

Really cute! I was a little bored of the repeating pattern, but I'll overlook it since it had an overall adorable atmoshpere! GG!

Cute game. The randomness of the pumpkins makes the game's difficulty fluctuate wildly between runs. I had to reload the game to get a manageable pattern.

Thanks all! Glad everyone found Ghosty cute. This was my first time with 3D so I went in not knowing how any of this would actually turn out.

@Ale I really wish I had used a lower-frequency sound for the pumpkin impacts and/or added a particle effect like you suggested. A visual cue would have also made the game more accessible for hearing impaired players so I'm kinda kicking myself for not having thought of it! Some subtle rails to mark the X boundary would have been good too. Additionally your comments caused me to look at the collision and I realized I made a mistake with the bullets. Ghosty's hitbox is a cylinder (correct since the game actually only plays in two dimensions), buuuut I used *CUBEs* for the bullets meaning certain angles were FAR more likely to result in a collision.

@natethegreat Ghosty actually does slide on a rail along the X axis, I just used the camera's Field of View and some rotations to make it look otherwise. Admittedly for no other reason than I thought it looked cool. Sorry that made it unintuitive.
