Aquajam by luizgama

[raw]
made by luizgama for LD34 (COMPO)
Hi, this is my 3rd Ludum Dare and the 1st I'm doing the compo. The theme I used is Two buttons.

This is my 2nd time using Unity3D, 1st was in the previous Ludum Dare.

As I have little artistic skills, I tried something I could build with only geometric forms and simple UI.

This is a digital version of a physical game I used to play during childhood, Aquaplay. It's a case full of water and it has 2 buttons that push the water thus pushing the ball inside.

This is a basketball type game, so the player that makes 22 points first, wins.

Controls:
Player 1: Z key
Player 2: M key

Future improvement:

I need to learn to do UI scaling and anchoring in Unity3D;

Push buttons should be 3d and interactive, for touch controls;

The original idea was to make a mobile game, and the input would be touching the virtual buttons in the game;

I wanted to add an underwater shader during the Menu and endgame interfaces, and inside the case, but I don't know how to make shders in unity yet;

Add more art, textures;

Add better sound, fanfarres;

The physics felt pretty spot on but this was only fun for about 30 seconds (with another player). I think if it just had *something* over the basic model of the original game it would have had significantly more staying power.

It reminded me of that old school boxes with water, with rings or little balls in it, I have no clue what they are called.
The concept is good, but it needs some more to be great. Both players have equal powers, and can't do a special move or something.
Also, next time please make a WebGL build, so everyone can use their default browser ;)

I think it's always interesting to adapt old non-virtual games to a new form.

That said, one of the best parts of doing that is adding all the cool stuff you can do in virtual games. It would be nice if the game was more "juicy" - particles or trail renderer in the ball, more feedback / impact when you strike a "goal"... Though of course, you can only do so much in the compo.

The game is pretty solid, though! No bugs, everything works perfectly.

Some feedback (bubbles) on the streams of water would be nice and would make it more intuitive.
