Can Adequately Generate Charge, C.A.G.E. for short! by Izokia

[raw]
made by Izokia for Ludum Dare 46 (JAM)

"Can Adequately Generate Charge, C.A.G.E. for short!" is a mix of an arcade and story based on a computer bit trying to keep a CubePhone's power from reaching zero. To win you must reach 100% power! To do this, you, the single computer bit, must play through a selection of fun mini-games. Every second of success gives charge, but getting hit by opponents kill your battery life. You could even just turn the phone off and let it charge on its own. It's completely up to you! Keep that cell phone alive at all costs! I was so excited for my first Game Jame ever and i'm proud of what I was able to accomplish with this one (even though attacks and some games are messy), everything works! I hope all of you enjoy the game and the story within the story.

Creators Note: There are multiple endings to the game. An Easter Egg is hidden in the game that unlocks the true story of the game. A "real" ending of sorts. Find it. Or don't. Like I said this game is all about your choices.

Hint: Sometimes the end really isn't what it seems.

Great concept! fits the theme nicely, would be cool if there were more mini games :v:

Nice concept and minimal graphic, the dodge the box game was broken tho, you can just wait by the corner and fill the whole battery

Really cool idea, i think you could make the mini games a bit harder but for a concept it's preatty nice.

A fun set of mini games. I did get one of the endings but I think it was the most normal one. Nice job.

Music was a little repetative, I enjoyed the different games that I could play but would have liked to have seen more of them. I found the easiest way through, at times a little grinding games, was to just go to dodgeball and sit in a corner where I would rarely get hit to power up the battery.

The flappy bird mimi game was funny. I think it would have worked ever so slightly better if all the onscreen assets were moved and reused from the original battery powering up to make up the whole of the scene but it was close to it.

I LOVE your minigame idea - it is AWESOME. After playing enough, I realized my keyboard wasn't accurate enough, and I got discouraged by the large penalty for being hit and the small amount of gain for doing well. Your game is a great proof that games don't have to have great graphics to be fun.

Congrats on creating a game for your first jam!

I wish I could charge my phone by playing Flappy Bird all day, I really love that idea. I also really like how the game is angled and the "phone" going into landscape when I pick one, transition is really well done. I only have a minor gripe about cube drop game not giving me enough battery juice for each one while draining so much for a miss. (also, good job on the anti-cheese measures too)

@lker Thanks for the feed back! I did find it difficult to create a solid system for the battery. Maybe, an update after the jam or a complete rework just for fun.!

Hey this was really fun! Most have said it but Definitley the biggest problem is the difficulty of the different games, with dodgeball by far the easiest and the catcher with much too high penalty. It still was a really enjoyable time though, and the minimalist style is quite nice to look at.

I like the concept here, it's a fun minigame collection! One thing that confused me at first was using the mouse to press the home button, but using the keys for controls. The music is solid though and I dig the the screen rotation effect especially! In the meantime... I'm waiting for my phone to charge. It's the safest lol

This was a really fun bruh moment
Except the dodgeball one, the games were fun overall! The bullets on dodgeball were just too fast and unpredictable. The alternate route was really fun too!
The art is simple, right to the point, and because of that it's great.
Spectacular music, but having longer loops and more tracks would fit the scope of this game way more.
For a first this is great, you're completely on the right direction.

@dugas Thanks for the feed back! I apologize for the short loops (Not to much time to squeeze in higher quality there :C). I see how dodge ball has the most issues, again sorry. I'm glad you found my "secret". Thanks again!

Great idea that fits the theme really well! I did find the flappy mode kind of frustrating, it didn't seem like the movement was precise enough to get in some of the smaller gaps.

Creative theme, but the mini-games aren't that mush fun to play. The small screen area really makes Dodgeball and the catching game more of a luck thing.

BRO! You really hide the most behind a secret ending? :) First I thought - ok, three minigames with battery storytelling. Then I read the description completely and decided to find it. Then I found, that the main screen is generally just a distraction for whole main story and best minigames... Well done, mate! :) Wondering tho how many people really spent time and found out...

I really like the idea and the creativity of flipping the phone, but I didn't find the mini games that fun to play. For the amount of time you needed to play them to win the game, they felt more like chores at some points and the ending wasn't rewarding enough for the effort in my opinion. I also found the secret ending, AND IT WAS SO FUN and it's kinda disappointing that the best part of the game was hidden away.. but that was really great :) Overall I thought the whole game was very clever!

@adonisdevs thank you for the feed back! it was had to judge how to give and take battery. I also ran short on time to make mini games fun/complete, sorry. IM SO GLAD you liked my mini games though! I wanted it to be hidden or else it wouldn't make sense with the story I tried to build. Im glad more people are finding it and Im even more glad they are enjoying it!

That was a cooooool game! I loved the story element. My one small complaint is that I wanted the movement to be a little more snappy (so use Input.GetAxisRaw() instead of Input.GetAxis()). 5/5 overall!

Interesting concept! I thought of doing something like this, but I never developed the idea to this extent. Great job! I liked the different ways to win the game. I never figured out how to get the second ending, but even so, it was pretty good. Feel proud of what you did here.

Nice little set of minigames and an interesting concept. Never seen a phone that _gains_ battery while you play games :P. Anyway, main areas to improve I'd say would be the graphics, by adding extra particle effects and so on, and movement responsiveness.

Also, a minor design suggestion, in the box catching game, the sound effect being the same to catch a box as when you get hit by one in previous games instinctively confused me initially; making it a different noise would be better I'd say.

I like the idea! Very nice to play. Controls weren't too good at some games but it wasn't a huge problem. Now that i found the secret root i can see why the game is called CAGE huh

It is fun and very original!
I guess the first level has a problem, if you stay in the specific position that shows the capture and you stay there, you win being afk. Then, in general, the idea is very good. Nice game

Nice entry! Controls in some of the minigames could be tighter, especially as in some cases they could require a degree of accuracy hard to reach with a keyboard, and the charging speed could be faster: eventually they could drag on and repetition could become boring.
It was also possible to nullify gravity on the flappy bird-alike by sticking to the left wall. You would still have to move up/down from time to time, but it helped reaching further.

After a while I managed to find the Easter Egg (I think) and that was interesting! I got Undertale vibes for some reason.

Congrats on your first jam game, it shows a lot of potential!

It is a nice concept and impressive for a solo project. All worked well and I didn't encounter any bugs. Got boring for me after a while, as the minigames are very simple and repetitive. Maybe more mini-games would help for that. Or just some graphics to look at  Oh, the music got very repetitive very fast.

But I did manage to complete the charge and was asked if I did it in a away that satisfied me by the end screen . There was, however, no way to answer.

Cute little game! I like it's organic little magenta tail in a very cuboid world. I enjoyed the simplicity of the aesthetics, which communicates quite effectively with minimal elements. There were a few cheats in the game play, like in if you remain in a certain spot in dodge ball and you don't move, you'll never get hit and etc. Overall good effort! - J

Good work! Nice job for a first game jam. I found some of the mini-games easy and some really hard. Maybe next time it would be better to focus on one mini-game rather than three, and really make that shine. I liked the minimalist graphics. Well done on your first jam! - S
