made by tammukka for Ludum Dare 47 (JAM)

Content warning: flashing lights.

He's trying to make a friend, but he's still quite unsure of how that works. So defeat the Great Jantor, before he defeats you.

JANTOR is a pretty freaking weird bullet hell on rails with psychedelic visuals. Come on in, I hear JANTOR brought snacks.

Features/Objectives:

  • Move in a loop, wow.
  • Dash through enemies and projectiles to break them
  • Survive
  • Get yummy points
  • Destroy JANTOR
  • Befriend JANTOR???
  • Unsee JANTOR

This is GREAT
The juice in there is incredible !! I had trouble understanding what was happening at first (I regained health at some point ? How ?) but I quickly I got in the zone and it was so great. The atmosphere is obviously weird but also so coherent. Music is good too.

Overall a great game !

High score : 3356 ! Is it possible to beat this thing ?

This game was amazing. It's so simple and the style is so defined (and hard to look at for too long, which is a great thing in this case!). I had way more fun with this one than I tend to have with game jam games. The only thing I think would be good to add is a start screen-- my first time playing, my mouse was low enough that the character circled down to the bottom before I could read the instructions fully.

This is a really interesting game. Obviously you've got the moving rail, which keeps things interesting, and having the screen focused on the JANTOR's face is good as well. It's properly unsettling and strange. Kinda punky feel. Great graphics and art style. Very memorable.

My biggest complaint with this game is balancing - I sometimes feel as though the rail bends in such a way that getting hit by a JANTOR's baseball or lipstick is inevitable, or the red boxes box you in such that you can't avoid getting hit by another projectile. I had fun, but I wasn't able to survive very long!

@glaas I'm glad you enjoyed the game! It is definitely possible to beat the game. You were very close to a turning point with your high score. Just a little further and you'll make it!

Love this interpretation on the theme! I dont play a lot of bullet hell games, but I thought having movement locked the rails and then morphing them was really cool.

The game is super fun and addicting, the style is nailed to the game very flashy and disturbing, I like it! Also the music fit very well.
It's very hard and the challenge seems to fit the game, since it is like he wants to kid u, but maybe you could have made it a bit easier. I tried my best and really wanted to finish this, but when I saw I needed more than 3 hits for the boss, I gave up. Too much for me!

The mechanic of the coins was fun and it was also fun to discover it, and not like said at the beginning as a tutorial (the fact that they explode for example, or the tangle).
The tangle also was nice, but it was never something that really made me more in trouble, indeed I thought more tangle helped me moving more precisely lol

My biggest complain is about the controls: I used AD since the mouse seemed impossible to use properly, but it was very hard to judge the direction of the movement since I'm rotating. From time to time I pressed D think to go right but i went left, because AD are not left and right but clockwise and anti clockwise, and it is always a bit too weird to get used to.
Also, since the dash relied on the last direction, sometime I've myself dashing in the opposite direction, maybe if the sprite said which was the direction it would have helped.

If the controls were better I think that the difficulty of the game would have been ok as it is now.
I could imagine that the weird controls could be part of the design (to alienate even more), but for me they were too frustrating.

Overall is very polished and immersive, so well done!

@toccio94 Thank you for your feedback! I'm glad you liked the game and got so far into the boss as well!

I pretty much agree with everything you said about the controls and difficulty, haha. We wanted to make more projectile patterns, but didn't have the time to playtest them thorougly enough, so a lot of them ended up being really difficult. Oops.

The controls weren't really iterated on at all either, we just kinda tried something and stuck with it, lol. Still not quite sure what kind of a control scheme would have worked the best...

We should have definitely implemented a grace period for the dash so you could still decide the direction a short time after dashing, but didn't think of it at the time.

Lesson learnt!

(You were really, really close to finishing the game, btw!)

@kirstu I'm sure I was close and I'm sad for not finishing it, but it was too much for my nerve ahah
Probably, for the controls you could have that, for example, D always makes you rotate to the right, and keep rotating that way if it become left, but if you stop moving and press D again you turn back to the right.
I don't know if this is clear said in this way, but it is something similar to what it is usually done with the movement in a 3d world when the camera change instantly, you still go in the supposed direction even if it is not synced anymore with the joystick, but if you stop moving it reset how it works

Maaan I finally beat him and got pretty far in the endless mode with **14424 points** :grinning:

The boss fight was perfect in terms of difficulty. In my opinion the endless mode after the boss gives the player too many HP pickups causing the player to get away with alot of reckless plays but just my opinion though

I couldn't beat him, but damn this game was sick. I only got 2.7k points. Gotta give it an honest try later.

Awesome game! It's a really neat bullet hell. The graphics are really good, as well as the audio. I think, despite how challenging it made it, the tangled loop mechanic, and the need to get the certain objects to "unravel" it, was really creative, innovative, and just plain cool. Overall, I really liked this game. Well done!

Great game! Not the first "The player is moving in a loop" game I played, but I liked the twisted loop and there's a boss to fight.

I love the perturbing of the loop that the player rides on, and all in all a really fun shmup!
