ray caster racing js by awesomearcade365

[raw]
made by awesomearcade365 for Ludum Dare 47 (JAM)

I made some sort of a racing game in javascript. You use WASD or arrow keys to move. This is the first game I've ever made and the first jam I've ever participated in. cover photo made in MS-paint. love to see your feedback!

For a first game this is a pretty awesome effort. The challenge in taking that to the next level is to find ways to make it more immersive and feel more like a game instead of a tech demo.

wow, did you use any frameworks/libraries or just pure js? I wish I read the description before hand bc idk hooooow many times I drove in a circle looking for a way out! ;) Great job!

Nice job but there isnt really a game that Im seeing here besides just going in a loop. Way to stick to the theme though!

Awesome game. This is very good for a first submission! It's really cool you used JS to make it too. It feels a bit lacking in a goal, something like a time trial or personal best would give the player more incentive to race fast. I love the minimap. Overall, solid entry!

@datadazer Thanks for your kind words and wonderful feedback. I was trying to make it so that the map every lap changes slightly and randomly, but I ended up running out of time and had to scratch that idea. a timer and lap count would have been nice as well. I'm glad you liked it.

Definitely fits the theme!

Friendly criticism:
-I think control instructions should always be in game and not rely on descriptions outside the game. I'm a gamer so wasd is easy enough to figure out, but a nice and simple addition would be to display the controls in the game on the screen until the player proves they understand how to move.

-It IS fun to go fast, but the turn speed is kind of hard to control, maybe the turn speed can be slower at slower forward speeds, and higher at faster forward speeds?

-An easy way to make this more compelling/interesting would be to put up some silly billboards around the track. Maybe something like "How do you keep an idiot entertained? See the next sign ->", and then the player just keeps seeing the same sign on every lap lol (I stole that joke from a t-shirt, all credit to the t-shirt joke writer)

Good job on the entry!

Interesting that you didn't use an engine like Unity or Godot. There isn't really much to do in the game, but it does match the theme. The graphics are simple, but its pretty understandable, judging that you only used html/js/css. Cool entry :)

@danial-jumagaliyev Thanks for your feedback. I'm kind of new to this and didn't find out about the jam until a couple days before. I didn't have much time to learn unity, so I just decided to go with something I knew. I was going to add more maps, a timer, and a lap counter, but I ran out of time. Spent WAY too long making the "car" accelerate and decelerate. I'm really impressed I even got the thing working in Javascript, but I think it ended up pretty well.

A little longer would be nice...

The game was very simple, but enjoyable! It worked well, I didn't encounter any bugs. Mostly I'm just impressed with your choice of engine. It's clear you're very skilled with it and I think that makes this a fantastic entry. As others have said, a lap counter or a little extra to keep the player around would've been great, but still I very much enjoyed it.
