Hula Hype by conrad123

made by conrad123 for Ludum Dare 47 (JAM)

Let's hit the beaches in the craziest hula competition ever! How many style points can you earn with your slick hooping-to-the-beat skills?? Just don't get knocked out by your fellow beachgoers! Man, so many people on their phones... and loose dogs... this might be tough, but I believe in you! You're gonna rock this with some sweet sweet hip swings!

INSTRUCTIONS:

Welcome to Hula Hype! Try to keep your hula hoop going. Keep a good rhythm and pick up items to gain style points. Watch your hoop meter and try to keep it up. If your hoop goes down, it's game over! Also avoid bumping into pedestrians or stepping on crabs, as it is not very stylish and may knock your hoop down. See how many style points you can get!

---------Controls---------

WASD to move

Tap the LEFT and RIGHT arrow keys to the rhythm to keep your hula hoop up.

A graphic will appear in the top left corner of your screen when you're playing. A hula hoop will rotate left and right over a dotted line to show you which side your hoop is on. When one side of the hoop touches the dotted line, tap the arrow key on that side. Look at the graphic when you're not sure which arrow key to hit, but use your ears to keep the rhythm. Otherwise, you might step on an unsuspecting crab while you're not looking!

Watch out for people, dogs, crabs and umbrellas! Don't collide with them!

Good luck!

NOTE: Mac version is untested.

Web version isn't working for me, stuck loading at 90%, same thing happened on my game and I had to do this: "Disabling compression in the Unity project settings (player settings - publishing settings - compression format - disabled) does the trick"

I'm on my work PC so I can't download, please @ me when it's fixed and I'll come back and play/rate!

@conrad123 Works like a charm! My high score is 3554, I really like the graphics on this one, and the gameplay is fun too. I'll have to get my partner who hula hoops to try it out.

The fact that the only rhythm is a metronome really makes me feel like I'm ***stuck in a loop TM***.

(You should get a higher grade the closer you are to the edge of the line, instead of a bit early.)

Ooeh this game really makes me smile! :D I enjoyed the music. I liked how the beach slowly gets more crowded. I also liked that I was allowed to make some mistakes.
Well done! :musical_note:

That was really fun! I don't have arrow keys on my keyboard so moving and balancing the hoop at the same time was kind of hard, but I enjoyed the challenge :)

I had fun trying to look at both the hoop balancing and trying to avoid all the other people/dogs :)

I really like the artwork together with the music and the hula theme, it creates this chill silly mood which fits together nicely!

It sometimes felt like the beat versus hula was a bit off, but maybe that was just me struggling to survive at the same time :P

Overall a great entry, I had fun playing, good job!

Fun litle game, i love the mechanic making you use both hands simultaneously on the keyboard with different rhythm. It was fun change of pace. I can't find anything constructive to tell you, it's well polished and could be imo monetized right away if you wished so. Sounds and music are great. Graphics nice and clean. Thanks for the game :)

Pretty cool idea. :) My first reaction was that I would rather have the left/right diagram closer to the center, where it would be easier to look at. But I guess having it in the upper left forces you to rely on the music instead. Congrats on a nice entry. :)

Great game! I couldn't get past 2000 but I really enjoyed the gameplay and beautiful visuals, having to dodge people and keeping the hoop up was an interesting challenge.

I just wish the hoop was kinda closer to center of the screen so I could enjoy the amazing art you made for this game more.

@freeworld @matthewrobo Thanks for the feedback. About the lack of synchronization between the music and the hula hoop timing: Were either of you on web? and what speaker/headphones were you using? Thanks.

@conrad123 I was using the web version yes. I'm using your average HyperX over-ear headphones (but I never had issues with sound being noticeably delayed otherwise), I hope this helps you :P
