Just a Stroll by killy9999

[raw]
made by killy9999 for Ludum Dare 46 (JAM)

title_big.gif

For our protagonist It this was just a stroll in the park until bloodthirsty pigeons starting attacking him. Now you have to keep It alive! Kill the pigeons by throwing stones. Throw them some breadcrumbs to temporarily stop them from following It. It has an unlimited number of stones but only three portions of breadcrumbs. Walking over rocks will slow It down, so be careful.

Controls

  • Move: W/A/S/D or Arrows
  • Aiming: mouse
  • Throw stones: left mouse button
  • Throw bread: right mouse button

Scoring

10 points per bird multiplied by accuracy. Yes, you will loose points if you throw stones that miss. It's better to throw less stones but accurately.

Implementation

Written in Haxe using heaps.io engine and deepnightLibs library, with gameBase as a starting point. See source repository for build instructions.

Looks good, plays well. The shooting sound effect was a little out of place, but I still enjoyed it. Good job.

I'll be watching my back from now on to see if there aren't any birds attacking me. Very fun game! Plays well

Honestly really fun, the art style is really fluid too. The sound of killing a bird does get a bit annoying after a bit though, but the actually gameplay is solid. Congrats!

Wow, we got so many comments over the night! Thank you all so much for taking your time to comment our game, especially for kind words about our graphics.
It was my first time doing pixel art and I'm glad you enjoyed it!

Thank you @noucake , @ul0n and @tomyomy! ![thanks.gif](///raw/10a/e2/z/31e60.gif)

_I definitely should go back to playing games instead of Aseprite_

@daregb Thanks. The game is intended to be quick and challenging, so that you can play a quick round in 2-3 minutes and have a feeling of "I want to play it again, I can do better". We should probably keep some sort of a highscore. My highest so far was 1490.

Cool to see others using heaps too! The animation and movement is very smooth, and it's satisfying to aim and throw rocks at birds. After a while your fire rate can't keep up and the world gets full of birds, but that's just how life is sometimes I guess. I managed to get 1500 points in the end. Well done!

Nice fun game! The only thing that I would complain about is the bird death effect and that it gets kinda laggy when there are too many birds x) But very fun overall congrats!

The game is quite fun and I liked the gameplay, which was really simple, yet challenging. At first it seems like it's an easy one, but later on it's gets harder and harder. I managed to get 710 and I stopped after this score.

What I liked:
- simple gameplay
- oldschool graphics
- psychedelic music

What I didn't like:
- bread throwing mechanism was too weak from gameplay side - it didn't give that much and the bread was really limited anyway

My ideas how to develop the project:
- add more psychedelic music and some gameplay mechanism that makes the game more hallucinatory
- make some big obstalces that entirely block the player
- poisoned bread maybe, which kills the bird that eats it?

Overall score: nothing mind-blowing, but a very solid and fun title. I definately enjoyed it!

@thomasward Thanks for detailed feedback! To quickly reply to some of your points:

> add more psychedelic music and some gameplay mechanism that makes the game more hallucinatory

It was our intention to somehow "break" the mood. Psychedelic music is one aspect of that, turning a sweet and mellow park into a bloodbath is another. As for other psychedelic elements here's an unused graphic:

![logo_chyba.png](///raw/5a9/e2/z/323df.png)

> make some big obstalces that entirely block the player

I feel that could break the flow of the game. Rocks that slow you down are already a matter of life and death.

> poisoned bread maybe, which kills the bird that eats it?

Great minds think alike. Poisoned bread was one of our ideas though a mechanic would be slightly different.

So that's a short answer. I have some more design thoughts that I might turn into a blog post, but I need more time for that. Once again thanks for your input!

well that, was f*cking terrifying! Awesome job! my only complaint would be the audio got a little much after a while but no worries, my game suffers from the same thing. Love the brutality and the whole idea in general!

Hell yeah, that's a good old "alien pigeon shooter"! Wish to have some explosive bread at my disposal :) Great game, had a nice time playing it. Good work, guys!

That was pretty fun, my score was 1211. Maybe you can an additional mechanic by holding down LMB for a longer period of time => less throws => each stone more impact. Okay, bye.

Loved the simple mechanics, engaging and rewarding combat, and awesome pixel art style. I love the arcade-y feel, so for possible improvements, maybe add a few extra maps? that would let the player experience some more variety without compromising the simplicity. In line with the arcade vibes though, maybe add a simple power-up? Like maybe the pigeons drop something that lets you kill two birds with one stone. Just throwing some ideas out there. Rock solid entry!

The game is really beautiful ! I really liked the splatter of blood that the pigeons left, turning the peaceful parc into a blood bath ^^

@muchobestostudio thanks for trying your luck with our game!
I agree, we found out about not-suitable-for-long-gameplay sfx too late in the development so that's why it's still there. We'll pay more attention to it next time :raised_hands:

@tomrafferty that's a pretty good score, congrats! :bird:

I got 1000-something at best. I just found out that a tactic with avoiding pigeons for a while in the beginning and then getting them in one place (_ekhmThrowingBreadekhm_) is pretty efficient, I wonder how you did you get your score.

Nice controls and visuals. I feel the difficulty ramped up too quick. Part of this is to do with the enemy AI. The way they just follow you means when you get X amount of enemies its going to start getting less fun to avoid. Perhaps having sub sets of the enemies attack on different times to make it feel a little more reactive for the player, maybe some different attacks like swooping in a predictable line instead of just following. Enjoyed my time with it though!
