GHOST FROM JAIL by Gilad Bar Ilan

[raw]
made by Gilad Bar Ilan for Ludum Dare 47 (COMPO)

GHOST FROM JAIL BACKGROUND Josh is a steeler that has come into the wrong place. Josh lives in the city of "Jailia", in Jailia there is the hut that no one ever wants to go to. Stories told to Josh that in someplace in the hut there is a lot of money. Josh of course, as a famous steeler doesn't miss the chance. He hacked into the hut in 3 seconds and started working on finding the money. However, Josh doesn't know a really important part, the ghosts that live in this house don't like guests, especially if those guests wants to take their money, In the second that josh put his foot on the door the ghosts have shown. From now on Josh's main purpose is not to take the money.

Josh's main purpose is to escape, Josh does not know that he will never be able to do it. But still, Josh will do as much as he can. From here it is your challenge, how long will you keep Josh alive? there is only one way to find out...

GAME EXPLANATION - The game is an endless runner based. Your main goal is to keep Josh alive, the way to do it is to kill as many ghosts as you can. The ghosts will follow you anywhere you go, try to avoid them by using energy balls. The ghosts can come in groups which makes the all deal much harder. What makes the game to be interesting all the time is the fact that the game does not go harder and harder any time. The hardest part of the game can come on the beginning it's all based on your luck. If you find yourself pushed into the corner you can use the second power of Josh which is teleportation, josh can teleport to a randomize place on the screen. BE AWARE because Josh's power has a huge disadvantage, this power can indeed save him, but on the other hand, Josh can be teleported directly to the ghosts' hands. In the hut, there are 4 types of ghosts. The red ghost is the fastest from all ghosts but also the weakest. The green ghost is the second-fastest from all ghosts but also the second weakest. The blue ghost is the second-slowest from all ghosts but also the second strongest. The Golden ghost is the slowest from all ghosts but also the strongest.

GHOSTS' LIFE EXPLAINED-

Red ghost - To Kill a red ghost you need to hit one time. Green ghost - To kill a green ghost you need to hit two times. Blue ghost - To kill a blue ghost you need to hit four times. Golden ghost - To kill a golden ghost you need to hit five times.

HOW TO PLAY-

Movement- For moving around the screen you can use the W, A, S, D keys, or use the arrows. Fireball - For throwing a fireball to a ghost press the F key. Teleportation - For teleporting on the screen press the T key.

Technologies - C#, Unity. IDE - Visual Studio, Unity Editor,Groovepad(Music).

This is a great little game. Good explanations and absolutely love the title screen with the alternating ghosts. For some reason, that fits so well here. Good job!!!

Nice little game!

THE GOOD:
- Different ghosts are a nice touch
- Random teleportation is a nice mechanic
- Animations are great

THE BAD:
- The game gets difficult very quickly. (Lots of ghosts, moving very fast)
- Firing delay is very long. (Removing the delay would make this a fun shooter game)
- Would've been nice if the above story and instructions were in-game.

Nicely done for you first COMPO.

Good first compo! It's a nice little game. Like others have said, it gets tough very quickly, but it got me to play it over and over again!

Hello, First of all, the music is great and the tutorial at the beginning is very usefull.

The game is fun but quite "simple", maybe adding one mecanics will make the game better.

Nice entry!

Really great first COMPO entry! It's my first compo too so well done :)
When I first started I got distracted by the teleport ability and forgot that you could move with WASD, so I thought it was really hard. Once I worked out I could move though things got a lot simpler and I really enjoyed beating all the ghosts :)

Good game! I noticed you said that "it's all based on your luck" as a point to why the game is interesting. I think in this case the randomness takes away from the fun. Especially the teleport. Typically it is frustrating to lose because of random chance, and fun to be challenged by a test of skill. Using the teleport and instantly being killed does not seem like it would ever be a good strategy, since you can die even if there is one ghost far away from you. I would like to see the teleport mechanic give the player a trade-off that they would want to try, and could be worth doing. On idea is restricting the fireball for a bit after teleporting. This would reduce the randomness and offer a choice to shoot your way out or resort to being defenseless and running.

Would also recommend removing or moving all the background info you have in the description. I think most people are just interested in playing the game and are not interested in reading a ton before they play a game for 1-2 minutes. Using Markdown formatting to add heading etc. would also be helpful. The how to play should be front and center.

Great job!

I had fun playing this. While an endless runner I guess is technically a loop it is a very loose interpretation of the theme. The teleport never seemed worth using.

Cool little game with catchy music and cute graphics. Becomes a bit hard really fast as the shooting is a bit slow and you have only one life.

Fun little game i like and dislike the teleporting. As a game mechanic its cool and well implemented but got me in trouble more often then out of it. The firing was a bit slow for me. Nit what i expected of a runner but well done.

Cool art! Firing is quite slow which makes it hard to kill ghosts quickly. Teleportation is always fun, nice addition.

Nice submission! I didn't really see the need to teleport, but then again my score was only 94 so maybe I could have done better. Liked the music!

Has good potential. Maybe a faster firing rate, and a slower ghost spawn time. But, the music was fun and the art style was fun!

Really good music, the time it takes for you to fire gets a bit irritating.

Others have mentioned, the delay is fairly long. I didn't use the teleport much at all since it could make a situation worse. Perhaps an extra system of getting 3 lives before you actually day may offset the teleportation randomness?

I like the mechanic of being able to teleport to a random spot when you are surrounded. It seems to ramp up the difficulty extremely quickly. But the gameplay is pretty solid. And the idea of being arrested by ghosts is hilarious to me.

Neat little game with nice music. Teleportation mechanic may be the last resort but it is too random in my opinion. Overall great entry!

Great game, but what is doors for? I didn't get it. If it's just a background - okay, but for the first couple of tries I wanted to enter one of the door to hid myself from the ghost lol. I must admit, it is kind a hard to survive, really. Anyway, good job!

I like that, the music is great! But I wish can shoot up and down too. And I think the T key to teleport is not the best input

Good game here. I think the games difficulty can be balanced out with making the sprites smaller or the room bigger IMO.

@gilad-bar-ilan I enjoyed the game, very well performed for Compo. Did not entirely feel the stuck in a loop theme. Also why the hero was with a mask in Jail? :D The story might be more: you try to rob a house full of ghost... my 5 cents :D I had fun good work :)

My first thought were the doors in the background were some way of navigating through some labyrinth, sadly they just seem to be... well the background (right?)

The graphics are really cute, and the teleport ability is a nice idea. IF there was some way of shooting upwards, the difficulty would be a bit more forgiving.

All in all, nice work!

Wow! This is really impresive to make in a weekend! From a technical standpoint I am really impressed you got in a high score feature as well as a tutorial that only played once. That was a nice QOL addition. I also liked the music as well, pretty catchy, especially the main menu.

The game itself is a little challenging, I thought you could go into the doors at the top or if you were suppose to proceed to different areas. It might just be me being bad with computer controls lol, but I can't seem to get the teleport done right, do you use it and move? I think one of the things that would be nice to have is the ability to shoot in more than one direction, but then again, that's why you gave the teleport ability.

Overall, solid game, impressive work!

@kaabiikaze First of all THANK YOU! I just wanted to say that the teleport is not suppose to be used very often. Only if you can't do anything else because the place you will be teleported to it's completely randomize this can save as much as hurt you :)

The good:
Nice that you made a tutorial. This really helps a lot!
I liked the graphics, it reminds me of those old cool flash games from 90's/2000's.
Music is very cool!

Places to improve:
Controls are a little off. Sometimes is hard to reach for T and F keys while you can't stop pressing wasd or you are dead.

Overall, good job!

Congrats on your first submission.

Wanted to suggest a couple things:
Your description is way too long. Most of these games get played for one or two minutes, it definitely shouldn't take longer than that to read the games backstory, and typically the backstory isn't needed anyway (tbh I stopped reading and just played the game). I aim to only put the controls and maybe some hints in the description, assuming I don't have time to just put them all in-game.

Speaking on in-game controls/hints, you should wait for a player keypress before progressing.

On the positive side, I love the graphics and character designs in the game. Sound/music was good as well. Controls were simple but solid.

It was really easy to get in the game. The game doesn't relay on reading the itch-page first. This is always good! Or in other word: I like that you have a tutorial in the beginning :-). Short and on point!

I like the style of the ghosts very much. They look really cool. Also that you can teleport is a nice feature. But instead of a random place you might could use the mouse for setting a target. Because at that point it is really a gamble if T will be helpfull or not. (If you want to avoid that the player jumps around to much: just add a condition. E.g.: 3 ghosts have to be killed before teleport can be used).

Imho the audio fits very good to the game :-)

Overall a good game which made play a couple of rounds =)

This is a cool game. I like the spooky vibe you've got on the go here.

Mechanics are good - especially the T to teleport to a random location.

Nice work.

Clean work:
graphics match with sound design. It's quite fun, patterns of ghost works. I was involved in the game, foes were giving me difficulty (it's a good point for a runner).

**Good game!**

**Here is my feedback:**

**What I liked?**
- I liked the music.
- Nice graphics.
- I liked the gameplay.

**What I disliked?**
- The description of the game is too long.
- The sprites have a very little low-resolution white outline.
- The default colour of the text.
- No need for home icon. You can make "Esc" for going back to the main menu.
- The bullet is too big, and doesn't look very good.

**Suggestions:**
- Maybe, summarise the description of the game.
- Maybe, start the game only if the player started moving.
- Maybe, add shooting SFX.
- Maybe, change the default text colour to black.

**Sorry for the critical feedback.**

This was a fun game! My biggest suggestion would be to vary the gameplay more as the game goes on. I really liked the design for the ghosts. Good job :)

This was fun. Maybe it's been discussed already but I found this issue: If I'm facing right and a ghost appears behind the character, I press the left arrow ←. But he doesn't turn left. He's still facing right but takes a step backwards to the left. I have to press twice or really hold down to make him face left. That got me killed a couple of times.

I like the interesting backstory! Overall, this little game was fun to play, though it would have been better if you could see your score after you died. The music didn't quite loop perfectly, so it felt a little jarring when it suddenly cut, but other than that, I really enjoyed the cute game!
