Death is in the Air by Banholio

[raw]
made by Banholio for Ludum Dare 47 (JAM)

- Update -

I have decided to make a small update, in principle I haven't made improvements in the game loop except for a bit of balancing after reading the comments. This is the list of changes:

(Bug Fixing) Problem playing the same sound repeatedly at players death
(Bug Fixing) Score stops updating after the player is death
(Bug Fixing) Removed unnecessary repeated loop when passing though gates
(Game balance) Enemies are not pointing at the player ALWAYS
(Game balance) Improved starting player fire rate

IMPORTANT: The update is only valid on the webGL version, the Windows downloadable version is the original uploaded for LD47

*- The Game - *

On Rail shooter inspired in StarFox and alike.

You are trapped in a loop filled with enemies, you must survive as long as possible. Keep killing enemies and your ship will improve.

How long can you last?

Coding and 3D Models made by me. Sound was made with Bfxr

Controls: WASD: move Mouse: Aim Left Click: Shoot

Playing tips Start by hitting the towers, they are easier. With time and score you shoyuld be able to improve your firerate. Also check your score to heal, it will heal 5 hitpoints when reached.

Note: I didn't manage to level up the enemies when finishing the loop, but you get the idea where I was going.

I'll update this page in the next days to include a link to itch.io and hopefully an html5 version. Thanks for playing!

Game keeps tension, love how hardcore shooting is. Sound effects are very awesome!

Sound effects are a little bit hard on the ears.
Some epic music would fit this game amazingly.
I did not see any effects when shooting. Should i be able to shoot the enemies?

Maybe it was from the HTML version but i didn't have any sound effects sadly! Though the loop effect was nice and pretty linked to the theme. Also I liked that kind of Kingdom Heartish graphics (the shoot 'em up mini game). And the controls are pretty cool!

I like the star fox theme, you did a good job. I did have a little trouble with hitting the enemies.

@fachscahfttf Yes you should be able to shoot, can you try downloading the game instead of playing it on html5? you are correct with the sound effect, I just added them at the middle and didn't pay too much attention to it.'

For the record, the towers should go down in 3 shoots, and I think the flying enemies too. At the begining I recommend to avoid the flying enemies and shoot the towers to get better shooting by leveling up.

Game is nice but I felt it was too hard to hit enemies. Other than that felt really nice playing!

@gabriel-pittol I have noted people found difficult to hit the enemies, here is my take on the subject:

1. Player doesn't know if he is hitting the enemy. I didn't have time to give a better feedback to the players if they made a hit or not, so it may be a problem of perception.

2. I should somehow make a better way to help the player hit the enemy, I have thought about it and maybe making the bullet bigger or balancing a bit the bullet rate of fire/velocity should help.

3. The gameloop is not very well explained, it's ok to just avoid some enemies and wait until the ship has improved (which I also didn't explain in game).

I'm thinking about making these and other improvements, but right now I'm still burned with LD47 and week work, I still have to decide if I want to continue with the idea.

Thanks for the feedback.

Nice game, but as the other guys pointed out it could use a few tweaks. I think maybe making the bullets faster rather than bigger could help with the feeling of accuracy, And of course like you've allready said, some way for the player to know that they did hit the enemy. The rate of fire could work as an upgrade after a couple of loops. But all in all a solid jam game.I really like the look and general feel. If you have the time I would really appreciate if you had a look at our game from ldjam :)

Great visuals. I think enemies should stop shooting me once I fly past them.

@larsdahl The game provides a way to level up the ship, but since I didn't have time to balance it, it is too difficult to level up at the moment (one of the improvements is increasing the rate of fire). I don't want to change it because It would feel like cheating. But I want to improve the idea later.

@roboshamit They stop shooting when you go pass the big doors... but now that you mention it, I agree with you

Nice game, but I don't like when half of the screen become unplayable zone. this is too much for an obstacle. Also would be nice to add some shadows to bullets for better 3D-space feeling. Those are not big problems, it's just some little things I would tweak.

Ah yes, Starfox! I used to play that so much as a little human. I liked the submission very much, however I found it rather hard to hit things, the aiming was not accurate or... maybe I just suck? xD

Nice graphics. But there are few things that I don't like.
It's hard to notice that we kill the enemy. The audio is CLIPPING and it almosts killed my speakers. You should really be careful about audio.

It's a nice game for a first submission! Most of what I liked and what I would have done differently has already been mentioned, but I also noticed that the score keeps increasing after you have died (at least when I played it). Perhaps it would have been better to freeze it so that you can see exactly how far you got.

Thanks for the comments, I have made a small bug fixing on the webgl version of the game. Hopefully this will improve other players experience.
