MUSIC: There is music in the game, but in some browsers it does not start automatically. If you don't hear music in the menu, toggle Music off and on again, it should fix itself.

Controls

  • Arrow keys to move.
  • Hold space and use the arrow keys to move with IT. Must be on the same tile.

Gameplay

  • Purple bullets hurt you, blue bullets hurt IT.
  • Holding IT drains your stamina bar. If it runs out, you will need to wait a bit before being able to carry IT again.
  • Keep IT (and yourself) alive!
  • Tip: you get extra score when IT passes through purple bullets.

JarHeads, the Story

It is the distant future, the year 201X.

Mad scientists across the world have united to create the maddest experiment yet. Collectively, they are known as the League of Earth's Worseningly Deranged Scientists. Their experiment: putting heads into jars.

After lengthy negotiations with the World's United Sanest Scientists, the key ingredient to the experiment was identified: heads in jars without the body attached.

Is is now the even more distant future, the year 201Y.

You, wearing a kind of a jar on your head, and a creature you can only refer to as IT are the last of your kind.

You are the JarHeads.

Also for some reason you have to avoid waves of bullets.

A lovely concept with a really steep difficulty curve! I couldn't wrap my head around it, but it is a really solid entry to the jam!

Absolutely the best game i've seen in the jam so far. Too bad now I'll spend all my time playing it.

Probably the best game I've played so far. Great idea, tight gameplay and seemingly super polished. Love it.

This is really good. Unique concept, very fun. The mechanics are simple and well explained, and the gameplay is snappy and easy to jump back into very quickly. Normally I write up a long paragraph in response to these games, but I don't have much to say here cause I think you pretty much completely nailed your concept.

I had so much fun. The funny thing is that I forget all the time who is immune to colors and I lose stupidity. But I loved the concept, the art and the fact that it is a game that uses music as mechanics.

Congratulations!

Nice game and interesting mechanics! I wish to have some collectables lives to restore my hp during the game and play a bit more. Also I don't see much importance of stamina. Anyway, great concept and nice music!

Awesome and addictive game, I'm going to keep playing it. The graphics are great, gameplay is simple but takes a lot of skill to master, the puzzles are pretty fair even if some of them are pretty hard and the score mechanic makes it fun trying to take risks with movement.

This game is really nicely made and snappy! Very addictive and the scoreboard surely is a nice competitive touch ! I personally got 7th at some point but I'll bookmark this one for sure. One minor issue I had was with the audio, I had to toggle "music" on and off for the soundtrack to play. Glad I figured this out because it is amazing. Well done and thank you for developing this !

Wow! Awesome. Very cool gameplay concept and executed almost flawlessly. I'm impressed. I'm a sucker for skill based rhythm games and this hits the spot all right. The art is great, good selection of colors and the music is pumpuing, especially when the bpm increases.
I made it to place 5 after three attempts (as for now!). I was a bit overwhelmed at the beginning because I didn't fully understood the mechanics yet. Afterwards, I was hooked. But I still think that some of the obstsacles were almost impossible to overcome. Sometimes I had to carry IT a longer way to not have it take damage and I always dropped him because the stamina ran out. Maybe there is another strategy to this, but it seemed like I had no choice but to take damage.

Great game! Thanks for makeing this

This is pretty fun! Didn't manage to get into the scoreboards, but held out for long enough for the waves to get interestingly difficult. Will be playing more of this!

(I had a peek at your source code! some very interesting tech there!)

Tight controls! Love it. The pixel art is cool, and the animations lend themselves to the mechanics very well. I had a bit of trouble remembering which color hit which character, so there might be something to improve in the coloring of the characters. But aside from that, what an excellent game. Feels very complete. Good job!

3rd on the leaderboard! Very addicting gameplay. The controls feel snappy. At first I thought picking up the purple friend felt awkward, but after a few plays I was into it. Really liked
- the risk/reward of dropping purple friend in front of purple bullets
- how the soundtrack that increased in intensity with the gameplay
- the way the bullets moved across tiles to make their direction of motion extra obvious

This game feels remarkably complete and polished. Had a lot of fun playing!

665830 from second try :) Easy to start, hard to survive after 200k scores.
I like this simple and fascinating game mechanic. Good work!

Love that there's two layers to the gameplay, just surviving and avoiding and then going for the score by leaving the head to face purple bullets. Controls work perfectly too. BPM gets pretty intense, would gladly have a heart attack again.

It's fun! I would like to see some crazier patterns (maybe even some that go off-grid??)

YES! This has got to be one of my favorite LD46 games that I've played so far. So polished it's practically sparkling. I worked my way up the scoreboard to 2nd place! (Technostalgic: 870480)

I didn't even know you made a game when I was watching you and Danae's stream, I'm so glad you left a comment so I could come check it out!!

The MUSIC is **SO GOOD**. Did you compose it? I love it! Especially the main menu music! I've tried to keep the game running in the background just so I could keep the beats playing, but it seems like the tab needs focus in order for it to play correctly :(

I don't think I really have anything bad to say about it.. Maybe it would be nice if it was a bit more obvious when the tiles that are about to have bullets run over them? It got kinda hectic and hard to tell when the screen was filled with them. The small arrows sometimes just weren't enough. But other than that, awesome job man!!

Really nice! The mechanic was fun and challenging - purple bullets being good for IT was an especially fun twist, though it took me a while to remember which color was which. I really appreciate the extra funny touch of JarHeads, the Story and also the vibrating "IT" - very ominous!

This is pretty much the perfect compo game - narrow scope, cool game loop that ties directly with the theme, music/art are solid. No real criticisms. I do suck at it though.

Very cool concept. I had problems remember who could dodge the blue and purple, guess that could have been even clearer. For some reason i didn't get music when i started up the game, but turning it off and on again fixed it. Got into the leader board but I bet it wont be for long :)

Love the idea - quite unique. I didn't hear the music, although it was on in the settings.

The graphics are awesome. Maybe some better color coding for bullets and characters would be great? I kept forgetting which bullets hurt who :)

Really cool concept and really really hectic haha. I thought I was doing pretty well but my best score isn't even close to the top scores! Loved the trails on all the characters / bullets - that was a really nice touch! My one suggestion would be to make it a bit clearer that getting hit with the right bullet gives you points - maybe with a +100 (or whatever it is) at the top right when you get points?

I was confused on who got hurt from what color but it turned out fun when I was able to kinda remember. Simple idea but a very challenging and very well polished game. Well done

Great concept! But phew, this is hard! I really think you need quite some practice to get into your head, that purple hurts you and blue hurts it. But it's really fun an quite a mind bender. Well done!
