Refrigerator wars by LittleBlueFrog

[raw]
made by LittleBlueFrog for LD34 (JAM)
You're a refrigerator warrior, fighting for survival against the evil bats and goats!

Controls: left and right arrow on the keyboard will select the command shown left or right. The dice icon will roll 1..6 to determine the amount of steps you can take. When you stop at an intersection the buttons allow you to pick the direction for the remaining steps. In battle the left arrow allows you to flee taking a little bit of damage while the right arrow will attack the monster.

Unfortunately the keys are not configurable as I didn't have enough time, sorry. Mouse support is now available as well, just tap one of the two buttons.

Goal of the game is to grow as strong as possible by stopping on the fields, try to find out what each of them does by playing the game.

The game requires a screen of at least 1280x720, I'm not sure if it'll work well on other dimensions.

Linux, OS/X and Windows version is available as a jar and should work if you have java installed (if you don't, you can get it at https://www.java.com/en/download/ ) and run it by either double-clicking or on console: java -jar LD34-Refrigerator_wars-1.0.jar

Developed on Linux Mint using intellij idea, LibGDX, Tiled, Inkscape and a tiny bit of Krita. No sounds included, so category omitted.

I really like the concept, but the movement between pieces is a little jarring, and it's not immediately clear what's happening when you select the dice (I assume it decides on the number of spaces to move). I like the fighting mechanic though, which is a very nice touch! A solid attempt, I think!

The game concept is really interesting, I like it. In the beginning it's unclear how the game works, so an ingame tutorial would make the game easier I think.
I'm not sure if it's intended but both dice show 6 all the time, I would have expected they show different numbers according to the number of steps possible. After a few levels I couldn't go further when reaching the exit, I'm not sure if that's the end of the game or a bug.
Other than that I would like to have some audio and some animations. There is a lot of potential in the game.

@loxo Thanks! I was really struggling for time so decided to focus on finishing the game's logic and rooting out the bugs before the extra art. The dice was supposed to be animated and the grey block on the second screenshot should contain a picture of the power-up (or down ;)) you just received.

You should be able to continue after reaching the exit, seems like it's a bug so I'll look into it.

I like your game, it's a real board game with only some flaws in animations and graphics. The gameplay is solid and the level generator is awesome. Nice job ;-)

I like the idea of the concept, too bad you didn't had time to finish and polish the game

Nice board generation, I love the way you took on the theme. It seemeds that my dice rolls were all different but it always displayed a 6. Graphics served their purpose and no sound effects sadly.

Too bad there's no sound and that the dice animation wasn't working as intended but I liked the board game concept. Perhaps you should add an option to scroll through the game map so you can see what's ahead.

Simple concept but a cool one. Wish you could see the player move steps individually, but still very cool.

Wow! A tabletop game with RPG touches, good job! The only piece I think it's missing is somekind of animations between movements.

Nice game. Didn't see the use of fighting and always fled. Power-ups and downs seemed a bit random. Liked the core mechanic of deciding which way to go.

Definitely needed more explanation and on-screen information. A BIG step would have been just to display the number of steps you were going to move before you moved.
