Ultra Quest by blobo

[raw]
made by blobo for Ludum Dare 45 (COMPO)

This is a rather short game

Rumors are spreading about treasure unimaginable. Everyone is too afraid to enter the dragon's domain... that is, everybody except for you of course! Unfortunately, you didn't prepare for this and brought nothing with you. Maybe we can use the environment to our benefit.

Controls:

W A S D: Walking

Spacebar: Jump

F: Interact.

Are you beefy enough to defeat some average and mostly harmless enemies? How about a queen of pure evil with minimal battle skills? I'm sure the dragon has been training his whole life to fight someone. That's a thing dragons do, right?

All comments are greatly appreciated! If you have any feedback at all, I would love to hear it.

I've fixed the softlock, though i'll keep it separate from my initial submission.

Pretty fun concept! Stellar graphics, seriously good job on those and the music was nice too. Great work!

Really great game, the amount of polish is insane. Graphics and music are fabulous, however the gameplay is very simplistic, and, as you know, it is *very* short. I noticed a few bugs, for example dying on the queen fight softlocks you, and the rocks freeze midair when throwing them. Other than that though, it was a blast. Keep it up!

This was awesome. Graphics were insane and transitions were clean. The level of juice is awesome. Only complaint is the rock throw mechanic was a little wonky sometimes and I don't know what the crown did, but great work!

If this doesn't take the graphics category I'd be shocked. Very good entry!@

Unskippable cutscene at the start, inconsistant graphics and pixel scale, buggy boulder collisions, the character decelerates too slow, and i got softlocked on the 1st boss.

Wow I really enjoyed that, the graphics are fantastic. I found the audio a little repetitive and I almost fell through the floor on level 2. That sword weapon on level 3 was really clever. Very impressed, you should continue on with this and make it into a mobile game. Cheers

Great entry, great sense of humor. Though personally, I feel that it would have been a lot better if you had given the player opportunity to improvise / be creative

My guy! What can I say? That was honestly very well done. The art style was incredible, the audio was fun. I love how you made all the bosses die in one hit, adding lots of humor throughout the game. The transitions were probably my favorite part of the game. The fact that you made this in two days and it being this polished is crazy to think. Great job!

That was such an awesome game! First off I got to say that the music was really well done and the little sprites were really cute. The game play itself was very castle crashers-esk and had a good flow to it. The whole game really held it's own and had a wonderful sense of humor. There was a few moments where the game had some wonky mechanics in movement, but it definitely didn't take away from the overall game. I'd love to see a full version of this game sometime :)

Excellent entry! Pixel art is great, particularly the backgrounds and effects. The zooms and freezes and transitions are incredible for a 48-hour jam. Well done.

This was really fun! After getting to the second level I couldn't help but try to speedrun it as fast as possible throwing rocks around every which way. It felt so fun to play! On top of that the music was a super great fit and fun in it's own right. And I haven't even mentioned the art yet. I am honestly blown away! Excited to look into your source code on how you did the cool Level beginning transitions!

The amount of graphics for this one is staggering. I'm surprised to see it finished.

I was struggling finishing mine. Some collisions need a bit of work. Some of the controls could be optimized, but overall I think you've done really well.

Wow short and extremely well polished.

The only complain I have is that the movement speed is too fast. It is quite hard to control the character.

The visuals are amazing and loose. The attention to detail in the credits, mario-like stage select, transitions, etc. makes the game feel remarkably polished for a jam entry. The seamless transition from BGM to stage-completion sound effect is incredible. Loved it.

Upon reaching the boss and falling into the lava pool, I didn't respawn and had to exit the game.

The particle effect on the player's death is perhaps a bit overkill, but that's a nitpick.

Loved it. The **intensity** of those boss fights  whoa!

The art style is beautiful and the game played really fluidly. It wasn't especially challenging, I think it feels like the tutorial levels of a game when you're learning how to play. That's not necessarily a bad thing though - I loved the way you incorporate discovery of mechanics. Like the careful placement of the first snowman - so when you hit the target with the rock you also discover that rocks kill snowmen too. Bravo

I'm impressed! So much in so little time. There seem to be a bug near the boss lady, if she kills you it becomes unplayable. But everything else was really well made! Well done!

Fun game. Great level of polish. The screen transitions were smooth and I like how the mechanic of throwing rocks builds on itself as you progress further into the game. I noticed some weirdness when you threw the rock sometimes. It would just get stuck in mid air for some reason. All in all a nice polished game. Fantastic job.

Insane graphics for a gamejam! Also some funny jokes in here which are always appreciated. Loved the screen transitions as well. The character moved way too fast in my opinion though. One of the best games from this gamejam I've played so far.

Amazingly done especially for one person! Art was great, only thing that didn't look like it belonged was the "star" backgrounds. Gameplay was fun and great that there were different mechanics, altough they could have been used more in the same levels. Music was well done and fitting, maybe a couple more sound effects here or there. Overall amazing job!

Amazing work on the graphics and the sfx! Although short, I really enjoyed the speedrun stats at the end and the difference in weapon mechanics for each levels. Each level felt fleshed out and polished.

Boss fights were a joke tho :P I got 6 death from normal enemies an 0 death from bosses hehe, might've just gotten lucky.

Nice work, keep it up :)

This game is visually awesome. Audio is nice too and fits correctly the game. My only complaint would be a missing "initiate jump" animation, or the speed of the character doing it (I'm not sure, but something felt wrong), but it was overall a great experience. Great entry!

Wow. The graphics are absolutely amazing. The music/sound also does a great job on creating the atmosphere of the game. However, i found the controls a bit too harsh, the player could have a smoother walk and jump, which led me to several dying and the fearsome softlock on first boss, which i couldn't pass. Except for this part, is an excellent work, specially for compo. Outstanding job!

Overall amazing artwork.

👉 Things I liked about your submission:
- Artwork / Aesthetics / Pixelart / Transitions ( I can keep going here)
- Feels really fluid
- Humor

👉 Things that could be improved:
- Bosses might've been to easy
- ( hard to find something else, taking into consideration this was a compo submission!!!)

Other than that, great game! Keep on making games!

Wow. what a great artstyle and game in general. You got a few good chuckles out of me. Minor thing would be the rock in the beginning i kept sliding off of it would have been nice if it was flush with the wall.

was able to beat it! Liked the transitions and the comedic timing of things. The movement felt a big too fast for me, like everything was sped up a little, which made timing the jumps a bit hard. Sometimes throwing a rock would get stuck on the floor. I felt bad for killing things, perhaps I wasn't supposed to. Anyway, keep up the good work!

Short and sweet! I beat the game in about five minutes. I loved the art style and animations. I thought the controls could be improved, since pressing throw(F) and right(D) at the same time can be difficult.

Impressive entry, more so considering it's a compo submission.

Loved the visuals, so cute and colourful, and the music fit well.

As for the game itself, I really liked the progression and the "creative usage" of the tools at your disposal. The sword bit on the third level made me chuckle, these details added some nice flavour

My only issue was that jumping and movement felt a bit fast, but it didn't really impact most of the fights or getting through the levels. Also, something even more minor: once you reach the end the player appears behind the chest, so the celebration feels slightly washed up.

Despite these things, yours is one of the best entries I've played so far. Congrats!

PS: I won BIG MONEY, yay :sunglasses:

Amazing graphics, brilliant humor, but it doesn't offer much gameplay-wise, and I had many problems getting it to run correctly. It crashed for no reason twice (which meant going through the intro and first levels again) and once in the world view I pressed F too quickly and got stuck, the transition animation didn't play. Though this was the first game that actually made me laugh in this Jam.

Nicely done! The visuals were great and the mechanics were easy to figure out. I found pressing F to be a little clunky when you got the sword, and I think you move too quickly for how zoomed in the camera is, but besides that this was fun! Good job!

Oh man this game is great! I loved the subversion of the genre and how the map was burning into chaos as you demolished everything in your path. The mechanic with the sword in the last level felt really good to use actually, even as a joke. I also loved the vector art + pixel art style with the transitions and such, reminded me a lot of Paper Mario. Really great stuff here!
