Neighbor - a spooky pixel adventure by kristinamay

[raw]
made by kristinamay for Ludum Dare 46 (JAM)

Neighbor is a first-person point-and-click narrative adventure about a woman, her lovely dog Willow, and her new neighbor.

It's a bit spooky and there are a couple of swears.

This was my very first time using Unity, and I created all of the assets including music, art, and code. I would have had this done in time for the compo, but. First time using Unity. :) This game SHOULD work on both Mac and Windows - I tested both.

UPDATE: I fixed the issue with text rendering in the intro, so the web version is good to go as well. Enjoy!

Tool Details: - Dev: Adventure Creator (in Unity) - Art: Pixaki - Music: Medley

I hope you enjoy, and thank you so much for playing!

Love the art style! The music has that inquisitive feel to it. A really solid point and click adventure.

I'm not sure what's wrong with this game for me, but the text is so small I can't read it. Sorry, but I can't really play it.

I loved this! The story was well-written and the music really helped sell the tension of the narrative (I got really spooked near the end!). Really great work!

As comments say above, the text was very small on web version. I loved the art style! Really cool concept!

A short but fun romp! I liked the unsettling music as it got towards the tense scene. Plot was a bit of a Deus Ex, but otherwise pretty good!

Hey @liam-binford @james-kusardi try downloading the game instead of playing the web version. I'm going to take the web version down for now until I can figure out why the first bits of text are messed up.

Just enough to do to keep the progression flowing, very nice.

Love it. Bite-sized, old school. I also had the issue with the text size at the start, but it resolved after the intro.

This was a super cool game! I loved the plot and the pixel art. In the intro cut-scene some of the dialog boxes were too small to read but after that everything was fixed and really well made and gave me an enjoyable few minutes of fun.

Finished it! https://imgur.com/a/2tNgcDC This was so great. The art is awesome, the story is ...disturbing in a good way? But also I hope it isn't too autobiographical :(

FYI the tiny-text issue in browsers can be remedied by zooming the page with your browser. Soon as the zoom level changes the dialog boxes pop into place. (at least on chrome)

Very nice! The shifts in music at different stages were very effective. A couple of glitches: at the very beginning the text was TINY and unreadable, and when Mike was in the tavern I was still able to get his dialogue in front of his house even though his graphic wasn't there. Great atmosphere!

Awesome game. Only problem I found was that I could talk to Mike even if he was not present there. But the pixel art and the music is awesome.

Really creepy. The music and vibe kept me on edge most of the time. Great atmosphere. I don't want to spoil anything, but I got a little stuck at one point. I had the same problem that others are having with the tiny text, but it was fine when I made it full screen.

@guardaro @vignesh-raj thank you for the spot!! I fixed the text rendering issues and fixed the Mike issue while I was in there. :-) Thank you so much for playing, all.

Absolutely loved the music and the mood. The pixel art was amazing as well. Maybe you could have done a little more with the theme but the ending was nice as well. Rather good point and click adventure :)

@trifectuh LOL the only autobiographical part is that I have an amazing dog named Willow. Here she is. She even has a purple collar. :-) ! https://imgur.com/a/0qoUIfz

Thanks for game experience)

Not a bad execution of the story. My main criticism would be that the objects that you can interact with could use some form of highlighting besides the text appearing. There were a few scenarios where I wasnt sure what to interact with (Aftering entering the location of the final scene, was stuck for a minute working out what to do). Also, where to click to exit the current location could use a highlight

Otherwise not bad, good work

oh wow well done! That's a lot of story packed into a small timeframe. And first time using unity! I love that you managed to craft a little world in so short a time frame!

From the thumbnail I thought there'd be a wizard! But oh well, bartender's fine as well!

Really nice little adventure game. If something, maybe some sort of indication where to click if you want to exit a screen, sometimes I had to scan the whole screen with the mouse just to get back to the previous screen.

Pretty neat game! There's enough little tasks to keep you engaged throughout the length of the game, and the music contributes pretty well to rising tension. I usually have some thoughts on what I might tweak, but I honestly can't think of anything (although that's likely partially because I don't play a lot of adventure games). Good job!

A very good game. I like the pixel art and the music; they both fit together well. It was fun exploring the map, and once I became determined to find a way to Mike's back yard, I never lost interest. You kept me in suspense. Definitely one of the better games here! Nice work!
