Giraffe Roller by commanderstitch

[raw]
made by commanderstitch for Ludum Dare 47 (COMPO)

TitleCard.png This is Giraffe Roller. This was an incredibly great entry for a Ludumdare, both in execution and results. Everything felt pretty natural, from the development to each aspect to getting stuck on bugs throughout the process. I was even able to get a tutorial built in, and a title card (never had a title card before!!)

For the sake of writing this in here: Use WASD to control and Left Mouse Button To Fire (charge up and release to power roll). Those settings can be changed via ESC and the controls menu to change them. I imagine you could use a controller to play this as well, though that's not been tested yet. ;-)

In case you get stuck: -In the first area, if you get lost, Go to the right off the screen. -The charged roll is charged by clicking and holding down the fire button. IF you let go you will zip! If you want to stop you have to click the button again.

Goal: To kill the enemy by wrecking his base. He killed your friends, you wanted revenge, and you're kinda stuck in the loop that was on the back of his truck. Yeah, you gotta have thirsty revenge for that.

- Voice acting: terrible
- Graphics: a toddler could do better
- Controls: very wonky
- Fun: Oh yes!!!!!

One serious point of criticism: the font on the main menu is pretty much impossible to read due to all the animations, although I guess that goes with your general art direction.

All around though, fun game. I got a good laugh out of it.

@indigo, thank you for being honest. You are SO right about being unable to read the tutorial/menu text. I did not realize that at the time. I can't change it due to submission rules, as it's not a game breaking thing. :-) Lesson learned! :D

Please don't take it as me being negative about it -- I totally enjoy the very MSPaint style. The drawing of the giraffe stuck in the tire is actually hilarious as well. I assumed this was all intentional, and my jabs are in good fun :)

Lol, wow, this is what the 5-star innovation rating is for! The giraffe tongue is the best part. The rolling mechanic is cool! I love the crazy text animation, but it hurts a bit. I like the art. Very creative.

Very fun time! Great amount of chaos, but not overly chaotic like some of your past creations ;) - fun mechanic, challenges, sound, etc.

Only two 'issues' I encountered: 1. It took a bit to learn to roll.. I read 'hold the mouse button' but after that not working a bit, I went to your menu for the controls (thanks for including that option to change controls!) and found it had mapped to Z for the attack.. once that was learned though, I was able to roll attack just fine and progress!
2. Not sure if it was intentional, but when the boss spawns each time for me, a massive amount of missiles are present.. like a giant snake of 100+ missiles, which obliterate me very quick if I don't do some crafty dodging and running..

Other than those two oddities, no problems, game ran great and I had a lot of fun playing it!

This game is an assault on the senses -- but a good one!

It was full of constant mayhem and I really wasn't sure what was going on, but I'm glad I played it and feel today I have become a better person because of it.

Everything in this game was somehow terrible and incredible at the same time. I loved it.

Took me a second try to understand what I was supposed to do, but I didn't get it right then either, took a few tries. But I did it!

Haha! This was refreshingly weird. Had a hard time accomplishing anything but I really didn't care because I was having so much fun :-) Ludum Dare needs more games like this one! Great work!

What a zany and wild ride I just went on. This game is absolutely ridiculous in the best of ways. Such a fun experience that was really goofy and lost myself in a laugh so many times. Fun character, I actually really like the sketched art, though I do wish Health and score UI was a bit easier to read. Also just adding a tiny amount of camera shake on impacts would really make the destruction of the base feel juicy. The projectiles were a bit too challenging for me. Other than that, what a hilarious experience. Absolutely loved it. As others have said, refreshingly WEIRD. Awesome game!

That was something! Love the art and general mood. The boss animation gradation was awesome. On the gameplay side, i found it very chaotic and wasn't very involved. Anyway very nice entry I had much fun discovering it

Wow, the screen is incredibly busy! There's definitely a charm to how goofy the art is, I love the facial expressions on the giraffe when it's in a loop. Neat game!

Very weird! I enjoyed the graphics and audio. The gameplay could use some streamlining, but I liked the overall mood.

This was absolutely hilarious. The drawings are great, the giraffe in the loop really cracked me up. I wasn't sure where the projectiles that damaged you in the first phases were coming from. The boss killed you a little fast but maybe I just suck. I feel like the giraffes and trees on the first screen could have used some layering.
Just a side note, but using these giraffe + loop images as a mascot, you could totally set up your own cereal brand.

Very immersive. The world building is most impressive. The story and dialogue really touched my heart. _No I'm not crying, you are._ Thank you for making such a relatable masterpiece reflecting my inner struggles and helping me find inner peace. VR version when?

Hey commanderstitch! I expected another original, instance-heavy, and frantic game from you, and I am happy to report that I wasn't disappointed, a true commanderstitch game. The charging-up mechanic was fun! You already watched me play the game but here it is again, just one click away:
