Keeping Itt Alive by ashashza

I've picked up Nuclear Throne recently and have been wanting to try make a top-down game ever since. LD seemed like the perfect time!

GIF 2020-04-20 18-06-17.gif GIF 2020-04-20 18-07-56.gif

I'm pretty happy with how most of this turned out. I was able to get the movement & enemy fundamentals down on day one and could spend the rest of the time jamming on levels and story.

While I did the code & art, I didn't make any of the audio for this jam.

I'd love to hear what you thought of this, so please drop a comment.

Thanks for reading... looking forward to playing what everyone made!

The legs, the legs! They were hillarious! ^^ Really cool game. The controlers were intuitive and the graphics were nice!

This game is excellent! I could see this on a console as a fully-fledged masterpiece.

Really enjoyed this! Great looking graphics, and the UI (or lack thereof) is one of the nicest touches I've seen yet :)

This game feels really good to play. It is very satisfying to use the tongue and the world-building is great.

Wow, this game was an awesome experience! I wanted to give up to be honest because I'm a frustrated player, but it kept me playing it to finish the entire game! Clap clap to you, it was a very good game experience. In my opinion everything was well done
- Graphics
- Nice musics (even if they're not made by you :P)
- Gameplay is simple but efficient
- Controls are intuitive
- Difficulty progression was neat

10/10 for me! Good Job!

Nice job! I really love the proc animation of the legs. Definitely a big win!
It took a bit of time to get used to the attack patterns (Those mantis' are real jerks!) but its cool that your attack can also be used to defend. I also used the rocks as moveable barriers which was great!

Sometimes the heart drops were flung outside of the level which is particularly sad when you have one hit left and a ton of enemies to take out XD

Well done on getting so much done by yourself!

Thanks for the kind words everyone!

@andret0701 Hehe, those legs ... at some point I fixed bugs with how they moved but it was way funnier with the bugs, so they stayed :stuck_out_tongue:

@gus-goucher thanks! I'd love to help correct the lack of chameleons on consoles :)

@arcayn thanks, thrilled you like the "UI". I had fun building it... and eating it... and building it.

@hexiez123 it's really nice to hear that you appreciated the world-building. Some of my favourite games do a stellar job at it and it's something I'd love to get better at.

@ommadawn Aw thanks. I've died in those waters soooo many times :O

@krystekku Wooo, glad you liked it!

@bionikmonster Yeah!! so glad you kept going and got to see the end. Thanks for the praise.

@pusheeneiro Thx, will be sure to send Ott your regards.

@blacksheepza Thanks! Seems like both our jams got some wicked leg action going on. I hear you on the attack patterns, I wonder if I should have cut 1/2 enemies and explored the others more through the level designs. Those heart drops!! Initially there were none and it felt too hard, so I snuck them in at the last minute (along with some physics-flinging bugs :P)

The controls felt amazing, the graphics we done very well, the game narrative was great!
Unfortunately I couldn't get very far, the bullets moved a little to fast compared to the frog movement.
Would've been cool if he could leap.

Love the artsytle and the leg animation.
Eating the speech bubbles is a neat idea.

Very nice game. Movement and story is funny. I liked the integration of menu button and dialogs in the gameplay. Although, It might have been better if bullet moved a little bit slower or if camera would have been a bit further from chameleon.

A really superb game! I got a bit scared when I read nuclear throne, but even I got a few sections into the game. The character and its movements brilliant! The very simple and well made tongue mechanics - all great. I was also very pleasantly surprised that the game actually does random order of rooms for that extra replayability. The one time I got the furthest though was a room which did kind of a U-turn with a sharp angle in it and an enemy surprised me by being able to shoot through the double wall. Eating up the dialogue was also a fantastic move! I wanted the replay to be in world frog-interaction too: with its last breath it vows to never give up and try again to save itt by slowly flipping out the tongue and landing it on the replay dialogue.

I like the play on a double theme here - you don't want to die and you don't want your daughter to die. Really well polished. Great submission!

It really feels like nuclear throne. You have stolen 23 min of my life! Water level was quite hard. I struggled with it the most. It was hard but fair, like when i died i knew that it was my fault. And you even did boss fight (this was actually quite easy especially in compare to the previous level). Those animations and idea of legs and tongue are amazing. Can you tell how you archived it? Have you edit vertexes in model or some other technique? Anyway definitely my top 3 so far

@james-joubert Thanks for your love on the narrative. Ye, the game is pretty tough and that was part of what I wanted to achieve. However, It'd probably be a good idea to tone the difficulty back a bit to give players a chance to see the story play out.

@harker thanks! :tongue: :speech_balloon:

@physi3 that's nice to hear, I've been trying to improve how my characters control.

@narom42 Ye, a few folks have found the game too difficult (or too difficult too quickly perhaps). Given more time, I would have liked to improve the camera movement, so that's a good suggestion.

@owen-rees Thanks Owen!

@local-minimum thanks for taking the time to give that input. I'm glad you appreciated the randomised rooms... I personally found that it increased my enjoyed while playing a bunch. Nice suggestion for the replay!! I wasn't happy with the "Press R" thing but didn't come up with a better idea during the jam.

@rkhadder <3

@risist Your comment made my day. I'm so stoked that you got to experience the boss fight... I reckon the difficulty is high enough that most players won't get that far ... congrats on getting there! The legs are just Unity LineRenderers that target some points (one of which tracks the ground and adjusts it's position when it's too far from a given point). I'd be happy to share example project / code with you if you'd like.

Nice one, Ash! (It's Adoné, hello!)

I loved the movement on the character, and the diegetic UI is such a nice touch. I know you said you didn't make the music, but good job on picking it. It suits the gameplay well.

I struggled to get past the second level (lol, bad at this), but I'm keen to go back and give it another go.

@zezel thanks! :lizard: :frog:

@risist No sweat, you can check out a repo here: https://github.com/anubisza/LD46Legs. You'll need Unity 2019. Feel free to hit me up if you have any questions.

@add-an-a Hey +A! Hope you guys are keeping swell. Thanks for the kind words on UI & tunes. Ye, I worry that the difficulty curve (or lack thereof) isn't right. I wanted Ott's journey to be challenging but I think it starts out too tough and doesn't build enough intrigue for most players to stick around for the story. If you do give it another go ... there are treats at the end!

I really love this game. It's very quite and it has a very interesting fighting mechanic. The graphics really help sell the world. My biggest complaint is around technical issues. Sometimes "bullets" would spawn outside the level which ultimately doesn't mean anything is wrong, it can just be a little startling when a particle effect pops from the other side of a wall.
