Blockemon by Steven C

Blockemon is a pokemon-like game where you have to gather and throw fruits at your creatures to heal them, or throw it at wild creatures to tame them. And unlike in pokemon-games, battles are in real time in the overworld and you can run around freely!

I focused on gameplay rather than graphics, and as a result, I have made a fun game (IMO) I am rather proud of.

Instructions:

  • arrow keys to run around
  • "C" to jump
  • "X" to throw fruit.

Some useful info:

  • thrown fruit can be picked up again.

  • throw fruit at wild blockemon to have them join your team, the lower their health, the higher the chance of success.

  • you can only have 3 blockemon on your team. as soon as one dies, you can have another join you.

  • if you die, or all of your blockemon die, you lose the game. After all, you have to keep 'em alive

  • pay attention to each blockemon's color and their projectile's color, the colors match the elemental-type.

Now go venture into the wild!!

Awesome game, and it plays very smooth and responsive. Very intuitive as well as after the intro/tutorial I was able to figure out how to play from there with no issues. Would love to see you expand on this, like special attacks, etc. Over all though I had a lot of fun playing this game.

Well, after playing for twenty minutes, I wasn't able to make it past the second forest. I like the general concept, but I wasn't able to get enough food to keep the followers alive, and it was really hard to capture new ones.

Thanks for playing everyone! and @good-enough, Yeah, I think I made it a bit too hard  Fruit respawns when going to a different area, so you can always go back to previous areas (with lower level creatures) to get some.

Interesting concept!

Though game itself is a little tedious

Surprised at how much there was to do. Obviously went for the green blockemon. The player having health themself is an interesting idea. I like the low poly look.

Kept jumping in front of bullets for my squarebasaur like he was the president. Would be really cool if the player could heal himself with the fruit. The ability to name your blockemons would be cool too. Thought it was really fun! Nice work!

This was pleasant. The style of a non turn based Pokemon is fun. The art, while simple, is still nice and enjoyable.

First of all, thanks for making the browser version!!!!!! Makes it a lot easier to play. I fell like this game has a lot of missed potential. You tried to maintain the pokemon vibe a bit too much I think, if you had letted go of it and made it so that you could have way more than 3 bloockemon at once you couldva make this game so much more fun and cool to play and watch. Imagine having an army of blockemon fighthing at the same time! I don't like that the player has a HP bar, I think only the blockemon should have HP. Reaaaaally missed some sound effects as well, you can find some free to use stuff online if you are not used to making sound (Like me) (If this wasnt a Compo entry of course). A bit more differences in the blockemon wouldve been cool, like the "bulbasaur" one had a extra cube on its head, little things like that go a long way. Also did not see much need to the limit in the ammount of fruit you can carry, It felt like a really minor inconvenience. Try to rate some more games as well! Cool concept overall!

nice idea to stay more or less put aside and commanding your blockemon by movement - it wasn't that easy to stay alive as it seemed in the first place - well done!

Had a lot of fun with throwing some fruits. there were times where I hit the enemies and they get healed. would like to have a way to eat the fruit yourself so you can replenish some health as well

I included your game in my video. Hope you like it!

@armani03k That's awesome! thanks a lot! I love it!
It does make me wonder if you figured out how to catch (tame) wild blockémon?
Throwing fruit at them always heals them, but it also has a change of catching/taming them, the lower their HP the higher the chance (at full HP chance=0%, at 1 HP chance=75%)

I liked your style of simple clean graphics for your game thought some background music or some sound effects would have really made this game even better. Good job on your game it was fun!

I lost in the gym! Nice game, played it for about 20 mins! I think the levels/routes are a bit too big, and it feels like you make just very little progress. But it's fun to have his own little Blokemon protecting you from the wild ones. They keep you alive, so you are able to keep them alive. Nice Idea!

I think the camera could use some improvement as i would have liked to see more of where i am going. The player having health wasn't very fun without a way to get some health back.
The game is a good example what a few simple blocks can achieve, congrats on your entry!

Hey this was a great simple game, I did however think the enemies and allies shouldnt be able to shoot through walls, and the pathfinding also wasn't that great. I do understand that this is hard with this time constraint though. maybe something for the future. great submition thanks!

It is a pretty fun game! I am not sure if there is an end to it or you can just battle endlessly or die (?). Graphics is exceedingly simple but the color choices are great - very pleasant to look at. Some audio effects (or background music - possibly something 16-bit, would fit well) would really go a long way here and help create a more urgent, battle-like atmosphere and made exploring the world more immersive.

I went to the gym and this is where my faithful Snow got murdered. I tried to avenge him but sadly, ended up dying with him.

Very fun concept, i think that with some more features, this would make for a very fun full game!

If i have one issue, it's that the fruit healer enemies when it failed to catch them. That felt weird.

Obviously the graphics weren't the most beautiful I've seen but they got the job done surprisingly well and I didn't really mind them.

The take on the theme is a *little* bit loose in my opinion but that's very subjective and doesn't really affect what i think about the game as a whole.

Great job!

Pokemon style but with more action and you get them back instantly with fruit,I would have liked a little more graphics, Nice job!

I don't know how you would balance it really in this game, but I would really like to be able to catch more than 3 blocks. Right now, i actually felt encouraged to kill off my own blocks as they leveled up so slowly grabbing a higher level wild one was preferable to try to waste fruit grinding my current blocks. Even though they were just blocks i still wanted to collect all of them lol good job
