Scumari 1 by telescape2000

[raw]
made by telescape2000 for Ludum Dare 47 (JAM)

A game where you play as sewage treatment worker Scumari in his quest to finish the level.

HOW TO PLAY:

Space - Jump

WASD - Move

Tab - Shop (Which I forgot to show in the video lol).

E - Interact (used to buy plank bridge).

Esc - Quit Game

This is my first ever submission to a game jam (LD47) and was very insightful to the aspects of gamedev i currently struggle with. I have been learning ue4 since early august and I'm very glad i was at least able to scrap something together in 3 days. hopefully next LD I will be a lot more capable of creating a more compelling game (and one that actually fits the theme better).

Sounds were mostly made by me (with some public domain sounds mixed together). All the 3D models were made by me. The music was made by me (it's literally me slamming a midi keyboard randomly). Brick and Wood textures from the Quixel Library.

Also small fix: The player was supposed to instantly die when falling off the stage but the damage wasn't implemented properly. It's now fixed.

I don't really know what to say, since this was obviously designed to be a bizarre nightmare. I guess good job making it a bizarre nightmare? Mario crossed with Rust with no in-air control feels exactly as cursed as it sounds.

161mb is a bit too much for a jam game, imho. Good thing you had the vid of playthrough:)

@baturinsky I totally understand, it's my first game jam and I forgot how big ue4 normally compiles without some modification. Def will keep this in mind for the next one though.

Interesting, it would be nice to be able to run faster, overall looks good and has potential, good job for a first jam!

as @weirdybeardyman said, fuster run speed would make the game much more fun.
But the graphics are pretty good ;)

Nice looking game, but not really playable. Could not buy bridge, I gave up after pressing ESC to close shop, which caused game to exit :P

Weird and cacophonous - I liked it :)

I wanted to beat it but I couldn't figure out how to cross the translucent bridge which didn't have a collider.

The gameplay was interesting enough but it was extremely barebones. Couldn't even stomp the default cube goombas!

I will say though that I'm probably going to lose some sleep over the soundtrack

@gucio-miszcz @skleembof I sadly ran out of time to put info in game on what you needed to do to get the bridge (which u need 30$ and to press e on it) but that was definitely my bad that I didn't communicate that in game. Appreciate the feedback!

Interesting entry. I like the fps mario idea. The visuals look pretty good. Good job on getting in your entry!
I think a couple simple things would have made this much better/more-fun.

***FRIENDLY CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM BELOW***

-Communicate game rules IN GAME. I often skip descriptions to avoid spoilers, and to test/judge "conveyance". To me, this is KEY to game design. Does your game work without words? Even BETTER! If not, you better explain what to do!

-Lower gravity. Jumping isn't as fun as it should be.

-Should breaking blocks really cause damage?

Since I didn't read description or comments untill after, I didn't see there was a shop in game. I didn't know I could buy the bridge, and it looks like that was a bottle-neck/deal-breaker for a few players.

It's very rough, but since it's your first jam I guess it's a nice work nonetheless. It's good enough that you managed to make it and publish it to be honest, you've learned for your next time =)

That said, I somehow liked your background music even though, as you say, is totally random. It gave the game a weird feeling ahah Probably it would have fit better if the game visuals also were more weird looking.

My main issue with the gameplay is that I thought at the beginning that you kept the progress even when dying so I was not understanding why my money went away as my upgrades. But that was one of my assumptions.

After I've learned that, I was bugged tho cause I didn't know how to get coins for the bridge (I've read here it costs 30, maybe you could add it to the description here!). I tried to hit the blocks but it seemed useless. I therefore looked at the video and I can tell you what the problem was.

I think that you need to hit too many times the blocks, and this plus lack of feedbacks on the block health lead me to figure out it was useless to hit them. I've tried to hit them like 2 times, and also upgraded my strength and tried again with no result, while I discovered through the video you need like 6-7 hits. With this I mean that you need so many hits that it is very unlikely you discover that you can break it unless you truly want to go on in the game. Maybe some sort of cracks appearing on the blocks would have led me to think I could hit them more to gain coins!

After discovering that, I tried the game a little bit more but I've not completed it sadly.

Again, nice work on making it to the end of the jam, just keep it up =)
