Keep the light alive by MaximBegunov

[raw]
made by MaximBegunov for Ludum Dare 46 (COMPO)

Description

A puzzle game where you control the streams of light and must use light to guide yourself in the dark. To move to next level you must connect the lightstream to the objective.

Controls

Movement - Arrows or WASD

Change the level - Numbers 1-5

Restart level - R

Return to menu - Escape

Walk into the blocks to move them.

There are 5 levels. Im so glad that I've finally managed to make a puzzle game. At first it was supposed to be a horror experience too but time was only enough to make the puzzle part.

If you encounter any bugs, or found multiple solutions for a single level please let me know. Thanks to everyone for their feedback.

I like those kind of puzzles, maybe not so innovative but fun never the less.

Excellent game! You got a lovely little puzzler here and getting it finished in time is no small feat. There were a few times I was stumped, but overall a good challenge. Pushing the blocks around is a bit finnicky though. I would have preferred just grid based movement, so I could focus on the puzzles themselves some more, but that is only a small gripe compared to the fun I had playing this. Well done :)

@ghostonline Thank you. I wanted to implement grid movement but while I was testing stuff it is suddenly the last 4 hours of the compo and I had no levels made so decided to stick to the temporary movement system I had.

@maximbegunov No worries, we all have features we had to scrap or implement differently due to the time constraints, that makes the compo fun :). Your game was still fun to play and I am impressed you have cranked out these interesting levels at such short notice.

Clever use of block pushing, light being used to solve puzzles (like puzzle 2 was a clever intro), and overall a great feel to playing it!

Great puzzle game with challenge.
I'm not sure if it fit with the theme. I understand that you need to keep the light, but if you don't do anything... it will be still lighting. Maybe mechanic which would keep the light alive would be nice

@sheetcode Thank you. Well, at first the light was supposed to dissapear when the player crosses it but I realised that would not work with my current state of game so I had to remove that feature. I guess I could interpret the theme in the way that you must bring the light to the end thus keeping it alive. However that interpretation is far from perfect.

Great game! Concept & level design are great. Some puzzles are a bit hard (but I might be stupid at times haha). It might be a bit away from the theme, though. And some music could be nice. But the puzzles were so innovative & fun so congrats! :D

~~Interesting  . Fun game mechanics and the music makes it feel like a rhythm game at times which was cool. The art is great as well :)~~

Edit: this was for a differant game

@43sam Hey you've might have mistaken my game for someone else's. It has no music:thinking:

Not sure if it's a bug, or I'm just not able to figure it out, but I can't seem to find the light receiver on the last level for the middle center door. There is a receiver that does nothing and from the gmx room file, it seems to be the one associated with the door. My guess is that it opens the center door while closing the one on the right, and it would explain the need for the light "holder". Here's the receiver and the doors in question.

The game is neat, but I managed to push things out of my reach and felt a bit confused afterwards. Perhaps the movement could be grid-based to make it a bit easier to control.

@blotosaur You are right, I've recreated the doors and it fixed the problem. Uploaded the fixed version to itch.io. I also just noticed that it is not possible to solve it the intended way because I misplaced the blocks (the last level was finished in the last 20 minutes). But I also found another solution to it so I did not make any changes to the level itself. Thank you very much for sharing the bug.

This is a really neat puzzle game! Some of the levels are actually pretty challenging and require you to think outside of the box. One area of improvement I'd recommend is making the light hitbox a little more lenient, because you have to be pretty exact when lining up the light with the switches. Overall, great game!

The level design is super great! I really like level that teaches player how to use the lag lens and how to destroy the monster in another direction. This game is the work of great design. Good Job!

I love puzzles so it was very fun to play through this, good challenge
One time i activated a switch that closed the door that i was standing in, getting me stuck and unable to move
Also sometimes you have to restart because you pushed something too close to a wall, otherwise great game!

Solid puzzle design right there! After I tried creating puzzles on my own, I really came to appreciate the thought and effort it takes to balance levels the way you did. Great job!
Also, I still felt a bit uneasy during my run, so the horror aspect definitely got through!

Cool entry, pretty neat for a "compo" game! At first I was struggling against the idea of crossing the light because I thought that I would BURN, however, I managed by attempt and failure hehe...

Some improvements from my point of view:
Lack of sound effects, mainly for the character itself, i would like to hear more sounds like the footsteps and cloths shrugging!

Some sound to increase the presence of the beams like a looping buzz and the monster like some sort of growling!

An ambience that could reinforce the environment, like the reverberation, some sound effects that could give the user some clues of "where" the plot is evolving!

@ivan-garcia-filho Thank you for feedback. More sounds would definetely make the atmosphere better.
