Crimson Labyrinth by k0haku

[raw]
made by k0haku for Ludum Dare 45 (JAM)

Change Log: - Fixed unclear help message for wall climb mechanic. - decrease file size dramatically

We suck at making games and the decision to participate was very random on a Saturday morning. We don't even know how to build the game properly using unreal engine. Not a good idea to do that an hour before deadline.

~~The game looks completely different because we did not rebuild the light too. Trying to fix it as I write this. And no music...~~ Nevermind, we did it.

But anyway, we did it. We finished a game. And that's what counts.

As for the theme: The idea is that you start with nothing and unlock mechanics over time.

PS: Yes, you have to Alt+F4 to quit :)

PSS: The moon skybox is from the free asset 'Good Sky' in the unreal marketplace. I hope we altered it enough. Also, the music is not ours either: Music from https://filmmusic.io "Lightless Dawn" by Kevin MacLeod (https://incompetech.com) License: CC BY (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/)

This is our first time doing this though. Hope you guys won't be too mad about us using those.

A great game you made, wish it got a bit more love and attention though

I enjoyed the exploration in this, even though it's a bit empty, I didn't mind it for the experience. However I found a tiny bug were I fell and got stuck respawning next to a platform and falling again, might wanna check that out. Cool mood setting!

I love the mood of this game ! And the plateforme gameplay is cool ! That moon is incredible ! I Ended up stuck on bottom of the tower, hold space do nothing, just wish graphics were a bit more detailed, with glyphs, symbols, landscape or asteroid, to create more mystery :)

@framg @vhalenn Oh no, I'm sorry, I forgot that. I wanted to change the text to spamming space.

@vhalenn I agree with the graphics part. Sadly, that's our weakest part. I feel like I should've mentioned that the moon is not our creation. It's the free unreal asset 'Good Sky', altered by us of course. I actually just wanted something so it does not look so boring, and it ended looking pretty decent in combination with with the exponential fog I was experimenting with.

Also, the music is not by us as well. I actually meant to credit that, but I've been busy with work and barely got sleep with the submission so I forgot.

I'm just saying that in case people would rate us based on the assumption that we crafted it from scratch. Feel free to change it if you want.

I like the ambiance sadly I was stuck when "hold the spacebar",... it doesn't work for me. Shame I wanted to finish this labyrinth. Keep it up nice entry!

I really liked the atmosphere! Would be nice if the labyrinth had more detail to it, but it was fun exploring it nonetheless. You made something really cool under the time constraints of the jam!

It definitely was not shitty. I think you guys did a fantastic job (especially for your first game). You did a great job on mood with the music and the fog. The camera and controls were smooth. I thought the level design was smart. I didn't find out that there was a respawn until I got the wall climb so it was super tense till I spammed spacebar and accidentally jumped off the tower. Your placement of the last question mark (or at least the last one that I had to go back for) was rewarding if you paid attention as your progressed. My only critique would be that it's a little simple and would be drastically improved with some lore. Great job either way, and keep it up!

Also, good on you for opting out of Graphics/Sound. We chose to do the same on our game, and I've noticed many other teams not do this when they obviously used pre-made assets.
