Absorb by dimlight

[raw]
made by dimlight for Ludum Dare 45 (JAM)

This time, you are a slime with nothing.

No weapons, no jumping skills, no sense of touch, no sound, and even no sight.

Luckily, you can ABSORB other creatures and STEAL their skills. Can you take the advantages of that and grow step by step? You begin from zero, but where will your end be?

Well, here goes “nothing”.

You will move on a large map, and there will be no evil “levels” to take away or reset your abilities. All you have to do is to make the most of what you have and keep looking for the next skill.

You will encounter:

9 completely different creatures that can be your prey (Which means 9 distinct abilities!)

3 exciting and interesting boss battles

Good luck, slime with nothing!

Nice Game. I really like the mechanics, they are a great take on the theme. I can't beat the scorpion. It just destroys every web i shoot instantly and neither the horn attack nor the slash do anything...

Man the animation on this is sooo smooth! Also love the concept of evolving the slim!

Great game! I really like the take on a theme where you should start from a black screen. Very cool idea to deliver a tutorial like that! Graphics is also great

@ausstein shoot web on the path of its tail as it sting you, then its tail will be trapped. Pay attention to the tips after death! :)

@nightvision65 then I'm just incompetent. I tried that but the web was destroyed instantly every time...

Very nice game! I tried really hard to jump through two connected holes, then I realize it doesn't work. How can I defeat that Longhorn beetle? I died three times already.
NightVision65
08. Oct 2019 · 09:20 UTC
@hydrate dodge its charge with jump ability or just simply walk away.Attack when it hit the wall and get dizzy. And the two connected hole needs the beetle's dash ability.

Nice one. I gave up after a while of trying to defeat the second beatle... it seems that I'm not doing anything to it unless it crashes in the web - which costs me integrity though. I'll probably revisit it later.

Great idea, fitting the theme. Art style is really cool too !
The Scorpid boss is in my opinion a lil bit too hard. The web is colliding weirdly with his sting.
NightVision65
08. Oct 2019 · 12:28 UTC
@shigor you can attack it mutiple times either using mantis attack or dashing when it crash into the web and it doesn't have too much HP...Usually it will be defeated after crash into 3-4 webs. If you can't get near it in time, just try to put the web near you.

Awesome game, i just couldn't beat the scorpion, too hard and repetitive for me.

Love the music and art style! That's cool. But i can't dash when i press w and S,so it is tired to clean the web. If i can press any key to attack, the experience can be better

@konomizure @eryph @ausstein The scorpion has been nerfed. Now we get better tips to show you how to deal damage to scorpion. The collision is also much more reasonable now. The place the scorpion choose to sting is clearer and you can have more time to react. Enjoy!

Loved it! The only minor annoyance was that the charge is on the horizontal axis only :). Lost to the scorpion a few times because I kept charging through his tail into him and taking a few ticks of damage. Ended up beating it by baiting for the tail on the vertical axis, so that there was no obstruction in the dash XD.
I AM...!
Love the take on the theme, I've read a few novels/stories that use this theme, to think the thought didn't even cross my mind to use that trope for my entry... Very nice work :D!

Finally beat the scorpion. This was really challenging. The gameplay, the graphics, the music - everything is top-notch. The best game I've played here so far.

Amazing little game with so much potential to grow into something better. The graphics were awesome, the music was nice and the sound effects fit. A bit of audio balancing wouldn't hurt, as some of the sounds were too loud compared to others. I liked the extra challenge the dash controls provide as well as how the enemies and new things are introduced. I genuine had to stop and think on how best to utilize my arsenal, which means a lot! Great entry and awesome job on this one! Congrats!

That slim art/slime animation is awsome :p Love to the slime.
Good feeling of pregression (getting stronger and stronger) through the game even if I got beaten up way too much by that first beattle. But now I have a brain so they can't hurt me (right?) :p

This is crazy good, especially for LD, awesome job. The art is great and there's a lot to the game. Were you by any chance inspired by Reincarnated as a Slime? cause we kind of were.

Did Slime bring the motif from the main Japanese animation? No further progress was made in the first stage. I want to know how. I liked the game graphics and sound

Had a lot of fun, good idea, good execution. But maybe making some of the collision boxes (especially those rock tile) would make movement more smooth, because then you 'catch' less often

This is really impressive.
I LOVE the expressive animations. And the way the levels are designed to teach you each mechanic before moving on to the next is really professionally done.
It's cool that you had the time to put boss fights in also.

If I am to come up with something constructive it would be this. I found it annoying that I could only dash to the sides. It made it feel like the world worked selectively based on what direction I was moving, which felt kind of inconsistent.

Other than that. This is one of the most solid ludumdare entries I've ever come across.

Nice tutorial, was a little confused once the "real" game started. It seemed like all I could do was fall through holes.

Nice game! I like the use of the theme at the start of the game haha. The animations are really smooth and the art style is cute. The music and sfx sound good! I found the holes were a bit unforgiving in terms of when you fall in them. Perhaps if the collider for them was a bit smaller? The scorpion fight was good, however I was a bit confused at first as to how you attack it, figured it out after dying and seeing the hint screen though. Aside from that though the rest of the game felt really good and was pretty fun! I enjoyed consuming other creatures to evolve reminded me of Kirby haha.

Move to the right of the map and find a way to get the grasshopper and then you will be able to jump through holes

Neat game! Graphics are on point and there is a bit of challenge with that scorpion boss, with some good mechanics. Could really be extended to a full game based on that absorption of skills mechanic alone.

This definitly needs further development.
Alright so first of all the tutorials... man I can't believe you guys manage to do that in 72h, including tutorials and everything.
The mechanics are great and feel responsive, althought the jump feels a bit buggy to me.
Loved the different insects, and the last boss was really good!

Awesome jam entry, this one captured the theme splendidly and felt like a really thought out game from start to finish, the last boss was a bit to hard for me to finish, but I enjoyed the way you had to be tactical to take him down. Loved the different powers you gained from absorbing the insects, and to have 3 bosses in a jam game, that's a tall order that you managed to deliver on well! Great job and Cheerz!

@hiago-tadeu @sawtan @entropy @m-dam @foursay @toasteater @lukein @elhombrebanana @naddir @mungo @ninben @plazmaz Thanks very much for your comments! Glad you guys like our game! It's a pity that we didn't have time to make the animation of dashing up and down, which makes the dashing quite confusing. We will try to do better next time!

Nicely done. Nice art and animation. There are a bunch of "start with no abilities" games in this jam, and you did well using the absorption theme with the ants, grasshoppers, rhino beetle, etc.

Good gfx, fitting music, interesting concept overall. It's clearly a well made game. However, there are no penalties for dying so that effectively makes your life infinite and the whole game becomes super easy. Also all the enemies except the last boss seems completely harmless and pointless since you can just absorb them all by spamming E. The lack of challenge takes away the fun factor and the sense of accomplishment when progressing.

@reax thanks for your advice! As a jam game we aim to let the most of the players get a good and complete experience. So we decided to make the game easy enough for most players to finish. We may let players to choose difficulty next time :)

Lovely game! I really liked the final boss. It was challenging but then, it won't be a boss for 'nothing' ;)

Pretty nice game, lots of content. The battles against bugs resembled the battle against king moblin from link's awakening. The setting recalled the anime " That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime". Thats was fun

Stupendous job. Even more for a jam. The graphics are really nice, the mechanics are interesting and easy to understand (even if not easy to master), it has lots of contents, stages, a boss battle (and a particular not easy one) and even a story twist at the end.

The only downside i could see (in fact hear) is that the music is almost unhearable. Specially regarding the boss battle the addition of a climactic music would improve the already neat game you guys developed.

Its also worth to note the amount of mechanics you put the effort to develop in such a small timeframe. Amazing job!

Fantastic concept, and great work with the tutorial / intro - really great stuff with the story and slowly acquiring the skills.
