False awakening by Robean

[raw]
made by Robean for Ludum Dare 47 (JAM)

False awakening is a 2D pixel art horror game where you play as a person who just woke up for work. And then woke up again. And again. And again.

There are some flashing lights in this game so please do not play if they will negatively affect your health. There is also a bit of creepy imagery but since it's pixel art it's not that scary.

Very creepy. Did a pretty good job of building atmosphere. I enjoyed most of the artwork, especially as it progressed and rooms like the bathroom got creepier or the picture on the wall. The picture I think may be the strongest set piece I experianced. The loop mechanic was interesting, seeing the changes and challenges. I did run into a few issues. When picking up the key before the wall attacks it's possible to get the key without triggering the wall. This means I made it out to a locked door and had to backtrack to activate the wall. Other issue is when the thing fell from the ceiling, the sudden sound did give me quite a jumpscare by the way, I fell into the hole and I was stuck staring at the hallway.

@thevideogamester Thanks for the feedback, I'm glad you enjoyed the game! Also I'm very sorry about the bugs you encountered, especially the one with the hole since it's pretty far into the game. I have now fixed these bugs with an update so future players wont encounter them. Thanks for letting me know about them.

Very spooky game, the atmosphere and art are great! Although the game seems to have a difficulty spike when your knife gets taken away again? I couldn't manage to get past the room with the two vases and the rug, without the knife it's almost impossible.

@parkuhrmd I'm glad you enjoyed the game, I'm very sorry to hear that the difficulty spike at the end stopped you from progressing, I have heard form a few people now that that part was pretty annoying so I'll have to work on balancing my games a little better in the future. Thank you very much for the feedback I really appreciate it!

Simple but very nice pixel arts. Give the character his arms back tho !!

Fantastic job at building atmosphere. Biggest problem i noticed was that your walking animation is not even slightly synchronised with the walking sound. (I also think a slower footstep sound would suit the game better). Otherwise, fantastic job.

Fun. The game accomplished relatively a lot with relatively little. I love the little touches, like how weak the knife feels in its movements or the little tippy taps of the character.
That said I had a lot of trouble understanding what I was supposed to do at the start of the game when you first encounter the black thing in the kitchen. It was hard to understand whether it was being damaged by the knife, since there was no audio indicator and the visual indicator was hidden by the flashes of blackness. It was all uphill from there though.

@minibetrayal Thanks for the kind words! Also you're right, the footsteps sound effects were very out of sync and quick. That's something I definitely have to work on in the future.

@c0nt I'm glad you enjoyed the game! Thanks for your advice, I agree that in hindsight it was very hard to understand if you were actually hitting it or not thanks to the flashing lights and that some sort of audio effect would have been good for it. I'll be sure to keep that in mind for future projects.
