Undead Car by M2tias

[raw]
made by M2tias for Ludum Dare 46 (COMPO)

Keep your car's engine alive so you can escape zombies!

Controls

  • WASD moves your character on the screen
  • Mouse aims the gun
  • Left click shoots the shotgun
  • Pressing E next to the car makes the player jump in or out of the car
  • Pressing F uses a gas canister on the car's tank. Even if it's full!
  • Esc to quit on windows

Goal

You need to get away from the incoming wave of the zombies. Small hordes of zombies probably can't kill you, but be careful. Keep an eye on the zombie radar, you'll die instantly if they get to you!

There's an abandoned car close to your shack. It might still turn on once. If it runs out of gas, it probably doesn't start up again. Keep that engine alive!

You can carry at most three canisters of gas along with you. Make sure the car doesn't run out while idling!

Disclaimer It's going to take multiple tries, but it's a short one!

I was just minding my business and decided to go grocery shopping with my shotgun, when the zombie apocalypse hits! Just my usual luck. And when my start my car, I discover my god damn piece of junk automobile eats all the gas in a few seconds! There must be something wrong with it. And the radio doesn't work either. Goddamnit. The I turned into a zombie. Makes living with these things much easier I suppose. What a day!

Congrats in making the game :D

If I can make some feedback, I must say the cycle of the game was weird: I didn't know where to go and the game finish even when I was alone in the map. The car don't look it can be controlled and it goes infinitely until game over.
Some objectives marks could be placed so the player know where to go and the car can be controllable.

Solid gameplay mechanics by the way. Congrats

I like the game but it was a bit confusing. At first I tried to shoot some of the zombies but my gun would not shoot. Also, I did not realize where I had to go until I had been there.

Cool game! The one thing I always advocate for is a tutorial level rather than a wall of text. It's really hard for the player to really understand all of the mechanics of the game just through text. Regardless the game itself was fun and interesting, just could've been introduced better!

Cool game, with nice sound effects and great models! I think adding a tutorial instead of text would be better

This was cool, and it looks great! It took me a few tries to quite understand it, but once I got used to the cycle of drive for a bit, check a building for gas, shoot some zombies in my way, it made sense and it was fun to balance the tension. I didn't really understand when the zombie radar ran out and killed me one time since I wasn't close to a zombie, but once I grasped that it was basically a timer it made more sense. Nice job!

Walked into a building and zombies ate my brain! I suppose that's what I get for buying a car that can only go 2 blocks on a full tank of gas. Nice game!

This is an impressively complex 3D game for compo, so good job there. I had a few hangups playing, namely the poorly looped car engine noise, and the fact that the car running out of gas is an instant game over, even if you could still find more gas, or there's already gas in your inventory that you haven't used yet. Also, there was a building that I went into that didn't cut away properly so I was killed by zombies that I couldn't see. This is a very solid effort for compo, though, good work overall.

@quinn-patrick The theme was Keep it alive and the point of the game was to keep the engine alive. I know it's annoying :D

Very good especially considering it's compo. Nice graphics and concept, quite fun overall. Could be a fun little game with more work, probably well suited for mobile.

Fun little game ! :)
It took me a few runs to understand everything but I had lots of fun playing thise nonetheless.
The zombie wave adds a sense of urgency in everything you do.

Was a good game, especially with the time constraints. It didnt look like my gun was doing anything most of the time, sometimes I would see bullets fly out and kill stuff but most of the time I heard the sound effect but nothing seemed to happen.

A few issues and bugs:
* Would be nice if after you lose the game gives an option to restart.
* It seems like every third set of shots don't appear on screen or appear to do anything at all
* Would be nice if you would get out on the same side of the buildings for quicker movement
* Damage from zombies might happen so quickly that there is no intermediate damaged state, just straight from healthy to dead. Introducing a few frames of immunity would prevent this.

The audio, graphics, and overall design I think is good it just needs some work to polish and refine the idea into a more workable format for playing.

The world was put together nicely, and the controls were nice and simple, however, I was unable to find any more fuel containers after the first one, and firing my shotgun didn't always work.
