Frost & Fire by Cryptomnesic

[raw]
made by Cryptomnesic for Ludum Dare 46 (COMPO)

Deep in the caves Khu's people have lived for thousands of their short generations, ravaged by radiation from the nearby quasar.

There were legends of a surviving ship far away beyond the rock walls that will carry them to a world of green, far from frost and fire.

One day by luck, earthquakes happened to clear the way to the strange ship while Khu was out hunting.

The ship has taught Khu its ways, now Khu must keep the people alive until they can reach the ship.

Inspired by "Frost & Fire" by Ray Bradbury

Use Enter key + 1-3 for your abilities. Clear a path to the ship. You can move your drones by clicking them and choosing a new position.

Such a cool effect when the cave is being frozen! Poor guys, they were not prepared for that at all!
Had fun making new routes, although it was not very clear what the abilities did at first glance or why it started to shoot the guys.

very nice concept and the lore seems deep

👍enjoyed it!

I love the retro graphics! The game title, the frozen wave etc... A bit difficult to understand what we can do though. Very good move overall still!

Nice execution, there's a learning curve but once I figured it out, pretty fun. Interesting concept on the theme, the graphics reminded me of the old atari I grew up with. Good job!

Took a few games to figure out how to play, once I did I managed to get nearly everyone out alive after just one day>night>day cycle. A pretty simplistic game but it's enjoyable, would definitely like to see an improved version of the game with more options or differences in the environment. The fire & ice concept was a good one.

Really good game. I think this is the first game this year I've played with an actual win condition, and I played this one all the way to the end. Graphics were nice, sound effects were good, and the story was really sad. Good job!!

Fun game once I worked out what to do, could have done with more instructions in about what you can do. Also think there may be a bug in there at the end as I had the "success" message and then half way through scrolling the message it changed to the "failure" message.

@staircase27a good catch. Pushed a fix so that the game doesn't keep running after it ends!

Lovely retro graphics, especially the night and dawn waves.

The retro feel (art + sound) is great. Although I am confused for quite a while. So maybe some instructions would help with that.

Definitely got confused with how everything worked at first (maybe I should have read the booklet that came with this game a little more carefully :P) but you definitely NAILED the style!

It's the kind of concept my mind can race with all the ways you can further implement the theme into a full game. Making your own path is a lot of fun, and would be great to see reasons for taking different paths. Great job on bringing the theme out, and with the look and sfx of it.

@kirbloid Exactly yes, there needs to be incentives to alter your path, I'm working on a version that is more fleshed out for after voting ends!

Hard to understand the abilities at first, but fun afterwards! Reminded me of the lemmings

One of the more unique compo games I've played here! It took me a while to understand how to play, but once I did I had a blast. I love the retro graphics too and the SFX. Overall, great job!

Interesting game. I tried a couple times to figure out what to do but could never get past the first day. I couldn't seem to figure out how the freeze ray could help, and it didn't seem like I had enough time or electricity to clear a path with just the mining laser.

I think I like the concept--some sort of a reverse tower defense--but it really needs clearer instructions.
