Parental Instinct, a horror game about keeping your infant child safe from a Monster that has recently awoken in the woods outside your house!

screen1'.png

In this game you struggle to secure your house by closing all doors and windows and turning on every light, all while keeping your baby from crying and avoiding the Monster!

Screen2.png

Controls and tips: -WASD to move

-SHIFT to run

-E to interact

-FOLLOW THE OBJECTIVE in the top left corner

-Close windows and turn on lights once the Monster is awoken to keep it away

-To get the Monster to stop chasing you, close doors behind you and turn on lights in the rooms you enter

-The Baby will cry and scream if it's hungry or feels unsafe, the screaming attracts the Monster, make the crying stop to drive the Monster away!

-To feed the baby, go to the kitchen and pick up a bottle and give it to the baby

-To keep the baby safe, make sure it's room is lit and closed (including the window)

Screen3.png

Known issues:

-Web version sometimes has weird lighting, possible that monster AI is also slightly different

-Windows version crashes sometimes, not sure what causes it, but it's relatively rare

-Mouse sensitivity is a bit high

-Timer rounds to nearest minute instead of up

Changelog: 1.1 - fixed an audiobug (hopefully)

HIGHLY RECOMMEND THAT YOU DOWNLOAD THE GAME FOR BETTER PERFORMANCE Web version is slightly jank/performs worse, and is only there since i don't have mac/linux builds

DUDE THIS IS A REALLY GREAT GAME WHY DOES IT HAVE SO LESS RATINGS
You should probably play and rate other games and get some karma, your game is really worth it, but you gotta make some effort

The game is very well done! I just didn't play until the end, because fear games are not for me hahahaha ... good job!

Amazing game! I'll admit I don't do well with horror games so I quit when I had to go into the basement, but that just means you did a fantastic job of creating a scary mood! Well done!

Very effective but simple horror game! I'm pretty sure I won, the game seemed to crash right as the timer ran out. Nice monster, I liked teasing him through the windows. Sound effects were great as well!

You got the feel just right, this is great. Even the screenshots spooked me before playing. You do horror games well! Can't wait to see what else you make!

Holy **crap**, man. I screamed so loud, my wife came up from downstairs to find out what had happened. Really, really well done atmosphere. The graphics, lighting, music, and sound effects all blend together to deliver a very creepy experience. At one point, as I was closing the front door, it passed in front of me briefly, but did not attack, and disappeared almost instantly. Not sure if a bug, or something you added intentionally, but it was super reminiscent of a horror movie scare! So well done. From a game design standpoint, I also really appreciated the opening phase where you turn off the lights - it introduces the player to the house layout, and helps build tension for when the core game actually begins. Great presentation. As someone above said, I hope you rate more games so that this gets some additional visibility - I think it will do really well if it gets more ratings. Great work!

Man... Good thing I played this this morning and not last night, otherwise I might've not slept as well. You really push all the buttons of a good horror game. You have a nice buildup, and a very suspenseful atmosphere. I was really impressed, well done!

Good lord that actually really managed to creep me out. It's surprisingly frantic! I'm shocked your game hasn't become more popular in the jam. It's got the same creepy magic that Slenderman has for sure. The graphics on the house are great. The baby is a little unsettling though I guess that's the point, and the monster is adequately grotesque. Great job!

This is one hell of a horror game.
Kudos for creating such an unnerving experience in 48 hours and having a working web version as well.

You've got some nice stuff here! Good job on the baby sounds. I was really impressed when the monster opened the window and reached in to open the door latch. The whole thing has a good sense of tension.

There was one time a lightswitch flipped right as I was standing next to it, though. That took away from the sense that the monster was doing it.

I never though an accordion could be so scary. This one was really nice for this style of horror game. I think at 10 minutes, it's a bit too long for an LD game. But I did manage to get through the night with my horrific looking son and that horrific monster outside.

@devesh-sharma Glad you like it! And yeah, i know about the karma. I just hadn't gotten around to playing anything yet due to unwinding after the jam.

@binary-coder, @thornduck, @djn and @hamrathdoesldjam Haha, not much of a horror guy myself, just wanted to try something new. But I'm glad you gave it a shot anyways!

@aidanmarkham Thanks, the monster is for sure one of the parts I'm the most satisfied with! And yeah the game probably did crash, I've had it happen a few times with the Windows build, but I'm not sure what's causing it.

@drums Thanks for playing and i'm glad i hit the spot with the spookiness. I might develop this further and do a full release, I'll have to see how much time i have for it!

@jason-woerner Haha that's hilarious! I'm glad i managed to make something that actually scared people. And yeah the AI could do with a bit more work as his sight isn't too good. Also glad somebody finally picked up on my subtle inbuilt house tour-"tutorial"!

And the basement part of the game was added as an additional spooky part that forced you out of your established comfort zone in the house, turns out it was too scary for some!

@andidebob Thanks for playing, I'm glad i managed to nail the horror feel as it's quite new to me.

@thebreakfast Glad you enjoyed the creeps the game gave you. Thank you for playing, and a Slenderman comparison is high praise for sure! And the reason the baby might be a bit unsettling is because it's just a fatter scaled down version of the monster model haha.

@phoenix-fireflower Thanks for enjoying it! It was a tight fit within the 48 hours for sure, last couple of features were added hastily in the last 10 minutes even!

@randomnine Thanks, i did my best with the baby impression as i only had myself while recording lol. Glad the tense atmosphere came through successfully. And yeah the light switches do turn off randomly as i wanted things to be a bit harder and giving the sense that the monster is at more than one place at a time.

Okey I got scared a little bit.
I love the Music when he chases you . and when enters the home.
it would be more fun if he entered from different places.

first time I encountered the monster he didn't see me so I just looked at him with his dump walk lol

the baby creeped me out more haaha

nice one man. GJ!

No joke, gave me goosebumps. I played web version so running didn't work very well (input too sensitive to run without bumping into walls) and unlucky me the monster happened to be in the kitchen the same time I went to turn on the lights in the kitchen.

Scary as heck. Also I envy your accordion skills, I can barely play spoons so extra points for that.

This is really a nice game. I liked it. The scary mood is felt immediately.
But some how the creepiest thing is the baby, and his cries :D
Nice job.

First, thanks for this HTML5 version. I really appreciate it for multiple reasons. Anyway. I really felt this horror mood. My cat didn't like your baby crying (me neither). This is a good example of how things can stay simple and effective. Audio and sfx help a lot. I will not play this again. My monster baby will die alone in this house.

Very cool game. That baby is creepy. Going around in the dark really add to the atmosphere. The combination of mouse and directional keys was hard for me to master. Maybe the mouse moves to quickly compared to the keyboard. And – that's a lot of work you've got done in 48 hours. Congratulations!

Wow, what an atmospheric game. The game is really well done and highly polished. I like the modern/ps1 graphics combination. All in all, strong entry! Well done!

I thought this was pretty original and creepy. It worked really well. The quiet parts helped build the tension, and having the goals spelled out helped guide the player.
