Area 64 by AdamWatters

[raw]
made by AdamWatters for Ludum Dare 46 (COMPO)

NOTE: if the text appears to be going off the bottom of the screen. Zoom out in your browser.

Area 64 is a text adventure taking place in the fictional town of Withrope. You are tasked with delivering a package to Area 64, a top secret base hidden somewhere in the town. The only problems are: you don't have anything other than what you can find around town, You're told to keep the package 'alive' (whatever that means), and to top it all off you don't even know where Area 64 is! There are six different music tracks in the game so ake sure to have your sound on!

Controls

The game's controls are simple. At the end of each passage you are given a number of options in the form of blue links. Just click the links with your mouse.

Note: In order to interact with certain inventory items you need to click the relevent button in the sidebar. pic1.png

The Save System

The game comes packed with a save/load system. In order to save press save and in order to load press load (surprisingly enough). After getting certain types of game overs you are able to just return to the moments right before you died, however if you get a game over for one of the following reasons: Getting 'caught', fatigue being too high, or torch power running out you will need to restart the game.

Alternatively you can press the little < button at the top of the sidebar to go back to the previous turn. pic2.png

Platforms

The game can run on most web browsers. It was only tested in Google Chrome, and iOS Safari. Firefox and Edge should also work.

THIS GAME DOES NOT WORK IN INTERNET EXPLORER.

Mistakes

If you notice any mistakes please mention them in the comments. Over 4000 words had to be written for the game, it's inevitable that I've made a mistake somewhere and didn't pick up on it.

The Source Code

If you try to view the source all you'll come across is the games (few) graphics, music tracks and an incomprehensible HTML file titled 'index.html'. In order to view the source code you'll first have to download Twine 2. After that just drag index.html into there.

Tools & Software Used

Programming: Twine 2, Visual Studio Code

Graphics: GIMP

Music: Bosca Ceoil & Audacity

Update 26/04

Fixed a bug where after dying and restarting the game, you would be brought straight back to the game over screen rendering the game unplayable.

The first text adventure I've played in like, 12 years. The music and sfx create a really nice atmosphere. Unless I missed it, an option to click to progress the text more quickly would be a welcome addition. Nice job!

It really enjoyed this! The sound design really sells the atmosphere

WHY THE HELL WOULD YOU TRY TO HUG THE MONSTER!?

@gamedoodles yeah I wanted to add an option to the title screen to change that but ran out of time in the end.

@blipbloop thanks for playing. Glad you liked the sound, it took hours to get it to work

I'll go check both of your games out.

The simplicity of the game's art is really nice. I like how the screen never got over crowded. The music was really nice to listen to as well :D One of the most polished games I've played so far!

Only because you asked, spotted a typo on the first screen:
* **First frame:** There are six different music tracks in the game so `ake` sure to have your sound on!

Really liked the game though! I hugged the monster, it did take me back to a different dialogue and the monster vanished which I suppose was a good thing!

I love it. Text based game is so fun, I still remember many (many) years ago when I played my first text based game :-) Nice game though! haha, of course I hugged the monster, so I needed to start over. Nice story, great sound effects. God job!

Good. Really good. The music really adds a dimension to the game. Text adventures are old school, but I guess I'm old enough... I like!

Can't hug the monster? I'm afraid that's going to cost you a few points.

Otherwise quite a solid entry.

Text speed could have been faster.

Sweet ambiance and a quite intriguing plot! Not sure why games like these always has a timer that kills you though, always feels so unnecessary. Good shit still, really enjoyed it!

SPOILERS!
- Small bug: after dying due to the torch running out, trying to start the game again puts me immediately into the game over screen. I can avoid the bug by loading a save, so it's not too big of a deal.
- Whoever manages the generator house did not pass password security 101.
- I like the little parallel between the starts of the two endings.
- Completion time: 34:29. With two coffees and two decoys to spare! Although, the monster only ever seemed to get farther and farther away from me, so I didn't really need the decoys. If anything, it was the torch that was the main source of death.

The music really helps set the atmosphere, the writing was clear and atmospheric really good work! I enjoyed exploring the town. One of my favourite compo games I've played so far!

Would have liked fatigue and distance to monster to be a little more prominent, an option to accelerate the fade in with a click would be nice, and finally possibly a bug that my inventory persisted between plays! Very minor issues that don't detract from this.

Adventure game. Yay! For some reason I couldn't hear the music. Not sure why. I liked the minimal interface and the mood. Maybe I'm missing few images with the text. Hugging the monster was cool - although deadly.

loved the game, I remember some of my first ever games were text adventures. The only problem I had was the inability to control the volume of the sound (either levels or on/off). everything else was great

That was surprisingly big for a text adventure written in such a short timeframe! The writing was very good and together with the music it created a sense of place rather easily in my imagination as I was playing it. I just wish that it would have been possible to switch off the torch when I wouldn't need it anymore but having the inventory in the sidebar was genius! I enjoyed it very much, although I was save-scumming a lot and had to start over once 😅 Here's the video with my playthrough: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z2FekepgpMs

I really loved the game. Text adventure with good writing is always fun to play. After figuring out the generator password, I kept on dying from either fatigue or the monster. Felt stuck a bit and couldn't complete. Overall a fun experience. Would love to finish it maybe later.
