The Old Shelter by Seind

[raw]
made by Seind for Ludum Dare 46 (JAM)

Where do legends go to end their days?

Secretly... In the deepest depths of the forest of Piul... some of the greatest personalities took upon themselves to build a place in which to live their last days. A place for them to retire when their time comes.

Many are the beings that looked after the dwellers of this place, many are the ones that did not return, or ever leave. Now you... you are the last of them.

That intro must be one of the most epic intros this jam.
I recommend it.

The input feels snappy and responsive. That's great.
I found the F / Q for pickup and throw somewhat fiddly though. None the less.
Liked it. Music is awesome.

I liked the game a lot. Understood it pretty quickly and I found it fun. I kept thinking that the vampires would come out of their coffins to add extra challenge, bit of a missed opportunity.

A bit long intro, but the last text "Keep them alive" was powerful haha
I love the idea of the little robot serving the last vampire.
Great job !

as some of the previous commentors I also liked the intro a lot. Epic, mysterious and sets the tone a lot. The problem is that when you hit play, that tone switches completely, mainly due to the music and colorful art. Appart from that, the game feels great and its gameplay is interesting as you can put some items on the ground for later. Good job!!

Great idea, that feels unfinished in implementation. Placing items on the ground is a little awkward both due to the q keybinding and the item being dropped above the robot, rather than where it is facing. Not having everything in vision can add to the atmosphere, but with the time to deliver orders being so tight even from the start, I frequently hit a sudden and unexpected game over screen, that just felt unfair and punishing. Still, the gameplay had me hooked enough to try over and over again.

The game play was really fun for a bit. Then you, ironically, start to feel like a robot... I kinda feel like I need to thank a robot today. So thanks for that!

I feel like there was a lot of though put behind the intro which was nice.
The gameplay itself... not so much. It's very basic and in a lot of case I end up dying because a vampire ask for something out of the screen.

Also on the visual side there is no coherency between the vector art (really well done and clean) and the grey background texture (more detailed but aesthetically more basic). Considering the size of your team it might have been wise to divert someone from gamedesing/code/production to art in order to get more manpower on this front.

The idea of vampires asking drugs from a robot is kind of fun though ^^ and the game is clean, without any apparent bugs which is always a plus in my book :)

This game is so funny! I really like the idea that we need to feed vampires! Quite hard to notice when they need some blood or tablets. Maybe it would be better to add some indication.

Thank you all for the comments!

@adinimys I'm agreed with you, I know that the texture don't fit with the vector art, I made the background with texture like a prototype avoiding that it would be only a color plain, but at the end I didn't have time to chage it, my bad. But, I like that you had realice about this detail :) Maybe the coherence between texture and vector art be the same that beteween vampires and robots haha

@naughtybird Yes, we thought about indications for it, but we could not include it in this version. It is more challenging, but I hope you have enjoyed it :)

I'm not sure about the mood of the game. The intro seems quite dramatic, and the game was quite funny. The gameplay works quite well, but is quite repetitive. I enjoyed the concept, and controls were fine.

I had the same idea than @hacktrout about vampire coming out of their coffins.

Not bad, but I don't like that you can't throw away an item or change it for another one. It's too bad that you can't start producing a new item with an item in your hands

Sorry @palvel , you can throw an item with Q, but you can't produce other if you have one in the plate.

@hacktrout and @chocolat-endive , we also had the idea of vampires coming out of their coffins too, but we didn't have time to implement it, so we let them like decoration xD

As others have mentioned, the intro was great. I enjoyed the music and sound effects a lot as well. I think it'd be better to be able to see the full map at once, or at least have indicators that show which object a vampire needs, and in which direction they are. It was difficult to keep checking into each room, and sometimes a vampire would almost be dead before I ever saw them. Overall, really solid entry!

Very good , solid game. Awesome graphics and soundFX. Controls are smooth and clean. It would be better to see which vampire needs what and direction of him. Good work...

A funny concept, although there was a bit of a shift in tone from serious-ness to goofiness after the intro to the actual gameplay. I think the best addition would be some sort of meter or timer, or just some sort of way to keep track of all of the vampires at once, that would help a lot with keeping up with the pace of the game.
