Equipped with a shield, you must keep your nexus alive as hordes of enemies come towards you!

Keep your nexus alive as it moves around collecting cores, using your shield to destroy any enemies and projectiles that come your way.

Make use of upgrades in the shop to increase your movement speed, add an ability to your shield, and more!

Levels are randomly generated so each run is unique. Scores can also be submitted to a global leaderboard, see how well you compare to other players!
(Please let me know if there are any bugs!)
Controls
WASD: Movement Mouse: Aim shield Space: Shield bash Ctrl M : Mute BGM

Features - Global leaderboard (If it doesn't load give it a few minutes) - Randomly generated levels - Variety of upgrades - Multiple enemies with different mechanics - Lots of bloom (Doesn't work on Microsoft Edge for some reason)

Tools used - Unity - Inkscape - Paint.net - Audacity

Be sure to post your scores to the leaderboard! I'll keep an update of the top scores here! (Last updated 4th May 2020) aa.PNG

Feels very polished for a compo entry, even with a leaderboard, and nice visuals too! Maybe the bgm could be a bit more..energetic? Was a bit tricky to get the motions coordinated, and there could have been an indicator when the shield-push was available. Overall: Good job!

@zondarg Thanks for the comment! About the shield-push indicator, there should be one at the bottom right of the screen, did it not appear for you? Just wondering if theres a bug

I really enjoyed your game! I think you did a great job adapting the theme. At first I was a bit disoriented, but I got the hang of things pretty quickly. The upgrades were nice as well; it felt like a smooth progression from phase to phase.

In this game I liked the feeling of impact on the shield most of all) Which is strange, but I really enjoy this!

Whoa! You managed 999 waves XD. Seriously, I really liked the art style, the grid made it easier to see where the enemies were going and therefore easier to block, which was good. Great game, I really liked it.

This is the game I've played the most in this jam so far. At first, I was going to give up after my first game. The game just didn't feel fun, nexus was slow, cooldowns were long and I died very fast. Then I found that the upgrades stacked between games, so I just had to play few more games to upgrade my ship and climb up the leaderboards! 45 minutes later I was third after some obvious cheater with impossibly high 999 score and one legit player who appeared in the boards while I was playing. We climbed the board together, but in the end, they were better than me.

Random thoughts:
- Music was just too catchy! 👩‍🎤
- I wish I didn't have collisions with the nexus. I also got stuck on corners, which has been a theme for me in many jam games
- Leaderboards were fun, but I think the score could have been something else than the level you completed for more variation

@joonamo Thanks for playing! Really glad you enjoyed it.

For the collisions with the nexus, originally the player could walk through the nexus but that made the game too easy since the player could just stand inside the nexus and spin their shield around to block enemies from all sides.

For the leaderboards, I agree, I'll definitely remember your advice if i do have it for any future games i make!

Lastly for the "cheater" with the 999 score, i wonder who could that be

Really good music, sound and graphics, especially for a Compo game. I played two rounds. Adding a high score table was a good idea, although some people have unfortunately sabotaged it with nasty names. In any case, I think this is a cool concept. Great job!

A simple but creative idea executed really well. The enemies were a bit too twitchy for my liking but I had fun. Also, the music slaps. Fantastic work!

Simple concept, but deceptively tricky! I liked it a lot. Took me a while to get a handle on the controls (actually, I'm still figuring it out), but I think there's a lot of potential here. The sound design is nice, the look is polished, and I love that there's a leaderboard. Nice work!

@armani03k Could you tell me what browser you were playing on and the browser version? Iv'e heard from some people saying the volume is too loud but it seems fine for some others so i'm trying to figure out if it's a browser issue.

I'm really very impressed by the quality of your game !
Everything seems complete, you can almost put it as commercial game !

The concept is fresh and fun ! I liked a lot the graphic style, it is coherent, and the little particles are cool.

Sincerely, I have nothing to say as criticism, you even made a Leaderboard !

Overall excellent work !

Superb audio, the upgrade system was really balanced and the gameplay smooth, great hex graphic and good job for having time to implement a leaderboard system(would you mind sharing how?).
Nice entry!

@fabrizio-spadaro Thanks for the comments! For the leaderboard i just have a SQL database which contains the scores and a php web page that communicates with the SQL database. In Unity i use a WWW request to the php web page to get or post the scores.

Heres a video similar to what i did: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SKbY-0zt2VE

@nachodlv Thanks for playing! The leaderboard doesn't load sometimes since i'm using a free database, so it isn't that reliable. It should work if you wait a couple of minutes. Sorry!

This was fun! Escort missions are usually a tough sell (even when the theme literally calls for it) but this was a fun challenge. I enjoyed the background music and I was impressed by the available unlocks and leaderboard included! That's a lot to wrangle for a compo, very well done!

A really fun game! I'm a sucker for anything using a hexagonal grid, so you had me there from the start. The idea is good, your objective is clearly marked, the controls are responsive. The only thing I'd change is to add a sound if you're trying to use your shield bash and it isn't ready yet (also maybe a sound when the bash finishes recharging). Other than that, I loved it, had fun playing it. ;)

Can't believe it's a compo game. It's so well polished you could ship it as-is.

UI looks great. Gameplay is engaging, you are given a lot of options. Not sure if levels are hand made or procedural, but pathfinding alone is impressive.

Definitelly one of the top ones for compo.

Cheers!

@ryzy27 Glad you liked it! The levels are randomly generated each time, but most of them end up looking similar to each other. Thanks for the kind words!

Nice game! I didn't quite understand what I was doing at first, but I picked it up quickly! One misunderstanding was that I thought I had to use the shield bash on enemies, I didn't realize just having the shield in place was enough to block them. After realizing that I pretty much never used the shield bash, it felt kind of useless, but maybe I was missing something.

I had a lot of fun with this - the mechanic of having upgrades persist between plays definitely adds a level of addictiveness to this. Plus, the graphics and audio really work for the style. I did wish that I felt a bit more in control as the player - it sometimes seemed like I was getting hit no matter what, and winning was mostly a function of speed + hit points. I think making it a bit easier to take on enemies would help - which could be done in easy ways (just make the shield take up more angular space and have bigger radius) or harder ways (expand on the shield blast idea and have multiple weapons to deal with enemies - or add some sort of power-ups on the level to create a tradeoff of staying near the nexus vs. getting power-ups). It also might help if the player could just go through the nexus or if shield bashes had, at the start, a smaller cooldown, since it was hard to defend against two sided attacks (especially the fast attacks indicated by lasers - those usually missed though). I think that anything that makes the player more able to defend against all threats would create more of that arcade-style gameplay that I think would really suit the concept and the style. I really enjoyed playing it as is though. Very well done.

Awesome game!!!
It's easy to understand and play, the music goes perfect with it; also the presentation for music and posibility to buy upgrades make it more fun!

Nice game I really enjoyed it. One thing bugged me was the controls, I had to aim with mouse and then had to come to hit space and for that I had to leave either mouse or movement controls. changing space with LMB might resolve this issue. Overall fun game, nice looking graphics and cool BG music.

@monish-vyas Thanks for playing. Were you using the arrow keys instead of WASD? The controls seem pretty comfortable to me, since WASD + spacebar and mouse is used for almost all games.
